Recommend me some cryptic, murky religion/mythology inspired rap a la Killah Priest or Divine Styler.

I used to love this kind of shit when I was younger, and I feel like I'd want to hear some more. Preferably something that's a bit more freaky than your ordinary Five Percentism stuff, and less tongue-in-cheek than Gravediggaz.

Several tracks by Azeem fit into this category, although he does other stuff as well.

"God's Rolex"

"Contradictions"

"Frogs"

Jedi Mind Tricks esp. Legacy of Blood and specifically "Saviorself," but only if you can deal with the brutal, ludicrously violent homophobia.

Killah Priest, ftw

Death come to those who oppose
Knockin' at the door, holding a rose in plain clothes
Winter face ice cold, lock your windows
Still I come in when the wind blows, come in slow
Suddenly your eyes close
Then your body set free your soul, it rose
Turn into a black crow and fly into the internal night
That's when I also take flight
I turn into a great falcon
With mighty wings, when they flap they move mountains
I leap on your back like a wild fucking monkey
Eyes are blood shot red with a growling tummy
Beat your fucking back out, like a gorilla
When I was twelve, I figured my way out of the house of mirrors
I show up to a recording session with no facial expression
I'm just dead like I crept in
Escape through the east gate, return through the west ends
When the sun set, I'm like the westerns beneath the moon light
And the crescent, Priest, I have a stance, that's strong
When I perform, I transform into a sandstorm
Leaving one third of the land torn
I'm like mice, I react strange
I'm like a terror train, I react crazy when the weather change
Then the father of a hurricane
Here come pain, I whip tornadoes with iron chains
I make volcanoes scream out my name
Niggas kill me, tryin' to escape my wrath through death
Don't you know I'm crazy motherfucker, I'll hold my breath

So, any more recommendations?

This doesn't fully fit the description, but I'd definitely want to hear more stuff that's like it both lyrically and sonically (besides Jedi Mind Tricks):

Also, are there any American (or other) rappers who'd do shit like this:

If there is stuff with beats by Stoupe but NOT with Vinny Paz on it I rly would love to know. I love that guy's sound. Only thing I know of is that Canibus album.

Fucking magnets, how do they work? (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, me too. Would love to hear if there's something else.

yeah that's one of those albums that got completely lost in everything. i loved it and i remember playing the "one step" 12" a LOT lot. if you've never heard view from masada you're in for a treat. the beats aren't as good but as an mc, he's even better.

That and the one from a couple of years ago are def on the list
