This is the thread for the Charlotte Hatherley fanboys!

(and girls, too, I'm equal opportunity)

So "Behave" is a jaunty bit of guitar pop that reminds me of lot of mid-80s XTC with awkward yet jubilant guitar lines and nifty harmonies. Is Chaz going to break out with this album or not?

Yes, I just felt like starting a thread, and the only other one I saw was about "Bastardo." I am really loving this song today.

Listening to the new record now. It's definitely way more ambitious than the first, time has yet to tell if it's actually better...

Matt DC has a DJ story about somebody requesting Charlotte Hatherley but I can't remember how it goes.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:09 (seventeen years ago) link

they asked for one of her songs only for him to tell them he did not have any on him.

dined off it for years.

fell in love with "grey will fade" a while back, tracked down the album. great pop--smart person. so, her new one is out now? in the USA, perhaps?

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The first single/EP came out just before Christmas - digital download from her site. The full album is out in February and seems to have leaked - haven't found it myself yet.

The song I liked best of Grey Will Fade was actually "Stop," also some wacky guitar riffing. Great fun while driving.

One of my most played CDs from the last few years. Hoping the new one is even half as well played & arranged.. and has just as many melodic ideas!

Summer's coming (Sans Sushi), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:49 (seventeen years ago) link

The new album's pretty good, but it's going to need a few listens for it to settle in for me. Less overtly poppy, but still plenty of hooks.

Liking the first side better than the second...

It's a bit overwritten, or I dunno, but I've listened the album a few times, and still cannot decide about it. As someone said above, there are plenty of hooks, but somehow the whole product is a bit too difficult. I would like more songs like 'Behave'.

What do people think of her new tracks floating around, "White" and "Colours"? I like them well enough, but they aren't particularly sticking in my air. She's definitely toning back on the murky, underwater sonics of her last album.

Currently loving all heck out of her New Worlds album.

DavidM, Sunday, 25 October 2009 09:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "White" is absolutely brilliant, even better than "Behave" which I loved to death when it came out.

That said, "Colors" and "Alexander" aren't particularly doing it for me, nor did the rest of The Deep Blue measure up. I mean it was not boring, but that's a far cry from actually wanting to listen to the whole thing.

mitya, Sunday, 25 October 2009 12:25 (fourteen years ago) link

"Alexander" is currently my favourite single of the year tbh. Though I think "Firebird" doesn't quite work, the whole album is so, so good. <3 chaz

DavidM, Sunday, 25 October 2009 19:14 (fourteen years ago) link

So apparently there's some degree of American distribution on this album? I've been super-bummed that my favorite currently-performing artist's work has been thus far completely unavailable domestically (mostly because I see no reason why she wouldn't be at least moderately popular in America). And I was super, super-bummed to learn that I couldn't buy a digital copy of New Worlds on amazon.co.uk...only to discover that it's available on amazon.com. Even though the actual CD is still only available at a hugely-inflated import price...

Anyway! Currently downloading and I'm happy (especially since I wasn't even aware that it had been released until this evening). Grey Will Fade and The Deep Blue are probably in my top five from the last decade.

She's 3 from 3 in my book. New Worlds is excellent.

ayo this is a dope album

don't really love her first joint tbh so I'm calling 2/3

I heard this on Ollie Russian's 6 music thing the other day and thought it was good. Absolutely no idea it was her though.

I Spoke to two people tonight who mentioned Charlotte Hatherley in conversation and now this thread's been revived. 'how random', as the kids used to say 8 years ago

I heard this a couple weeks ago, but only just now found out she's behind it. Cool

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 February 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think I've ever head her or Ash before, but I really like ^this.

rob, Saturday, 25 February 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

I really liked her in Ash, but I only ever heard her first solo album. Are the others under her own name any good? I was really surprised when her and Ash parted ways. I know that Ash put out 1977 and the earlier stuff as a three-piece without her, but I always thought that she added an extra dimension to the band.

Yessssss. I'm so glad she's doing new stuff and that it's rad. I was starting to fear that she was going to wholly dedicate her talents to KT Tunstall for the foreseeable future.

massively under-rated artist, basically what Old Lunch just said.

I'm confused though, this came out last year?
