I don't believe there's been a You Tube thread dedicated to this kind of stuff before, but I remember DJ Martian had some great ideas along these lines awhile back. I think he posted them to a non-You Tube thread, though.

I don't know if you'd consider them "post-punk", but they seem like they'd fit on this thread:

(I'm actually cheating and just pulling out some of my favorite videos uploaded by one YouTuber. Who also posts to the New Wave Outpost, so he's definitely a NW afficionado.)

Moving a bit too dangerously into pop territory, but really very "alternative" for where they came from (i.e. here in the USA). Introducing the one hit by the only American New Romantic group to ever go anywhere (even if it was only temporary), "Romanticide" by Combo Audio:

But yes Dan by all means, I was quite happy with the selection there. Fantastic, man. Please bury me in the post punk new wave graveyard.

Phoenix I traded a few CD's with Mr. NWO. Not too many though.

Good Warlock of the West (Bimble...), Sunday, 7 January 2007 07:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard of Combo Audio but I know another U.S. band with "Combo" in the title that seemed pretty good. Does that count? Hahaha.

"You mean they did more than that one song?" Yes, Virginia, here's The Vapors with "Jimmie Jones":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PLXKIkbec8

(xpost) :) I had to include Eyeless In Gaza. HAD to. And you traded some CDs with Rubellan? Or the guy who runs the NWO? Oh, and it's surprising to me that you hadn't heard of Combo Audio before, but I guess that's only because I've personally been aware of at least that one song since the mid '90s.

I don't care if this is too pop for this thread. I just think it's way too much fun to ignore.

Fun Boy Three (w/ Bananarama, The Swinging Laurels, and a cast of hundreds apparently), "The Telephone Always Rings" (video directed by Midge Ure, featuring all manner of familiar faces)

OH, his name is Mike Paulsen. Can't forget. What did he send you?

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Sunday, 7 January 2007 08:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The Swinging Laurels? The Swinging Laurels? Really? My mouth is agape in awe.

DIRECTED by Midge Ure? What do you mean, he tried his hand at directing? Crazy.

Although I do want to say one thing: that song he did with Mick Karn, what is it? "After A Fashion"? I can't STAND that thing. No offense meant to either of them.

Good Warlock of the West (Bimble...), Sunday, 7 January 2007 08:06 (seventeen years ago) link

You've got to be kidding me. You've heard of The Swinging Laurels before?? Anyway, yes, they were the ones who provided the brass instrumentation on this song and three of them are shown on the video. This is getting to be, like, weird. And YES, directed by Midge Ure, which is why the very same Steve Strange puppet from the "Mind Of A Toy" video was also evident in this particular video. And -- eh, it's okay. You can't like everything someone does, not even if the two are certifiable geniuses. (Yes, yes, some of you may disagree, esp when it comes to Mr. Ure.)

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Sunday, 7 January 2007 08:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I've got to get off this board for awhile. There's too much good music out there. I need to calm down. Please excuse me.

And yes, even speaking as a huge PIL fan, I had no idea what the hell they would do with "Careering" on the Old Grey Whistle Test. That is the craziest thing I've ever heard, I think. They completely mutated that song into something else unlike any other post punk thing I've ever heard.

Holy crap, PiL's performance of "Careering" on the Old Grey Whistle Test? RULES. I'm serious. Did you know that it was that chaotic mime performance PiL did at around the same time on "American Bandstand" that got me to purchasing Second Edition in the first place? It was right around the time VH1 were airing reruns of AB episodes and I remember very well being shocked when I heard they were going to be on that program and then transfixed as the performance took place. One key memory from that that I will always have from it was having that New Wave boy with all those buttons trying gamely to attract John Lydon's attention while he did his robotic dance. I wonder where he is now. Anyway, back to OGWT -- that was SUPERB. I'm adding it to my favorites now.

Re: XTC -- this guy has a whole concert chopped up in his videos (lots of Drums and Wires stuff), and here's "Scissor Man" --

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTCDB8xhkh8

-- and good lord, all of them are really exciting, especially in terms of being reminded how good these guys were in terms of instrumental skill. It's even better if you know these songs well: e.g., above and beyond Dave Gregory's incredible lead on "Scissor Man," Colin and Andy start throwing in vocal and guitar harmonies that aren't on the recorded version. Same goes for D.G.'s lead embellishments on "Helicopter."

Bimble, thought you might get a kick out of the X-Teens. They were early-80s cult heroes in North Carolina. They put out a couple of singles & some albums produced by Don Dixon & Mitch Easter who of course went on to much greater fame producing REM's early work.

BTW, Don Dixon did some great new wave / power pop as a performer in the early 80s. Search Praying Mantis & Skin Deep. Lots of similarities to Nick Lowe's early 80s work.
