ABBA's 'Eagle' is so obviously about drugs i can't believe i didn't see it before!

They came flyin' from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand

And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flyin' high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please

As all good friends we talk all night, and we fly wing to wing
I have questions and they know everything
There's no limit to what I feel, we climb higher and higher
Am I dreamin' or is it all real

Is it true I'm an eagle
Is it true I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please

------------

that line 'there's no limit to what i feel' sounds like it's come off SCREAMADELICA!

Which drug though? Bacardi Breezers?

My favorite ABBA song - though all I know is The Definitive Collection. Did they do anything else this weird?

Define "weird"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

actually, I thought this was about The Eagles

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, I remember reading the "Eagles tribute" angle in an issue of Look-In in around 1978.

I think Summernight City is a good deal weirder than this and that was a single.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

"The Day Before You Came" is odder, too.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

"Two for the Price of One" is odd and great. "I Am Just A Girl" is the music to play during the creepy stalker psychopath monologue scenes in movies

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks for the recommendations.

Waterloo is actually about water sports

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Well not exactly 'bout "sports"... but you got the "Water" part right anyway.

When I Kissed The Teacher always stuck me as an embarrassing and weird thing to be singing about, when I was a young boy.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 20 November 2006 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

The Tall Dwarfs covered "On and On and On." It is sublimely weird in its evocation of rock-star decadance without anything ever actually happening. (And Chris Knox is equally sublime in the way he sings "Over in the corner I could see this other guy/He was kinda flirty, he was giving me the eye/So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star/Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar."

I do have problems seeing ABBA as a drugs band, but...

Anyway, great song. One of their best. Particularly pre-"The Visitors"

Good suggestion, but I don't think Eddie The Eagle had started his ski jumping career yet in 1977 ;)

Of course, it could be an allegory on how Nazi Germany started.

tiit (tiit), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:15 (thirteen years ago) link

IMO the most boring of their nine UK number ones.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never really liked the "candles round the campfire" version of Abba.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

'm w/ Marcello on this, definitely.

tiit (tiit), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Fernando was balls.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

alan partidge named hi son after it, that's the only thing that's
good about abba's FERNANDO.

pisces (piscesx), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Some days I think "Fernando" sucks, but some days misguided nostalgia makes me like it. I think it actually has nice, warm moments in amongst the suck.

I love Fernando! There was totally something in the air that night.

Napoleon actually surrendered in Rochefort. Song was originally called "Bellerophon" but Benny pointed out to Stig that this didn't have quite the same ring (ring).

In 'ABBA The Movie', 'Eagle' is played when Ashley the DJ is interviewing the band in a hotel elevator. So maybe it's about hotboxing?
