Maxwell's "This Woman's Work": opinions?

I never imagined anyone pulling off a decent cover of Kate Bush, but I think the guy does a helluva job with this song. The video is amazing as well. Thoughts?

I just saw that video today, but I was busy and I wasn't paying close attention to it. But my girlfriend was like: "That dude really sounds like a chick... But this song is pretty cool", and I listened to the familiar tune for a minute and said "That's a Kate Bush song I don't have, they used it in 'She's having a Baby, becuase John Hughes was big on Alternative songs (I think there was even a Love and Rockets songs in that movie)" anyway, she was like "cool, I need to hear her version." I had previously showed her who Kate Bush was when we first met becuase I was 28 and she was 20 and she like Tori Amos, but had never heard of Kate Bush, and I knew she would RECOGNIZE! Anyway I think that songs sounds great! and personally I really don't like R&B too much!! I'm glad Puff daddy didn't cover it, or that some DJ didn't drop a fuhnky-assed-street-beat or a wiggedy-wik- wik-scratch down over that track! Or have some exaggerated gospel sisters gettin' crazy and extending the notes all high and low style. It sounds good the way that dude did it. Yo, peace out!

Yeah, I can't figure out what's cooler: 1) That he did a Kate Bush cover, 2) That he pulled it off, or 3) That he managed to make it a single.

God, I'd love to see the look on Kurt Wagner from Lambchop's face listening to the album. Lindsay Buckingham's, too.

Misreading Can Be Fun: I missed a newline in Duke's post and read:

"I had previously showed her who Kate Bush was when we first met becuase I was 28 and she was 20 and she like Tori Amos, but had never heard of Kate Bush, and I knew she would RECOGNIZE! becuase I was 28 and she was 20 and she like Tori Amos"

which is a GRATE sentence. So insistent, like.

This is the first MAxwell song I've really, really, REALLY liked, and it's a cover. This probably says more about Maxwell than anything else.

It's NOWHERE near as good as the original.

Todd, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's good, but mostly it makes me want to hear the original. What a great single.

Didn't he do this song some years back on MTV or something, though? I remember hearing him talk about this song and then gently chastising the audience for not knowing who Kate Bush was.

i just heard this on the radio & i agree with mark-- maxwell's version ONLY makes me want to hear the original- sure it's a great song & not a bad performance but it's just so measured and controlled when the whole point of the original seemed to me the way kate absolutely fell into it..

I thought his version was amazing. Such crazy falsetto going on in that song and the video is great too. I've never really liked any of maxwell's stuff either until I heard him sing this song. Now I listen to it all the time. It just such a great song in itself and I don't think anyone who really loves this song and covers it can mess it up.

"This Woman's Work" Kate Bush is on her album The Sensual World. Maxwell had done an earlier version available on his MTV Unplugged, wherein he tells his udience to run out and buy Kate Bush material, "she's the bomb" as he puts it.

I know about Maxwell and Prince, but are there any other soul funk types who are Kate Bush fans?

I feel that this is ine of the most beautiful and powerful songs not to mention Maxwell is such a beautiful man. The video is really deep and you really have to listen to the lyrics to understand what is going on and that is the beauty of it. I like the version in the video but I prefer the version on MTV unplugged. Either way its a great song and video!!

I was marching in this with folks who don't know Maxwell's music and I was dazzled by his falsetto live on the Kate Bush song, and they weren't paying much attention. We were far from the stage. My wife was impressed at least. The others with me were more into Alicia Keys "Girl on Fire," a song they already knew.

Based on the above, am further regretting not seeing him the last time he was at a local arena
