My roommate jammed with them on "jam cruise".

Wait, does this mean we will never hear the untold story about the actual string cheese incident?

They're a perennial favorite in the Jam Band Game (great way to kill a long drive, you keep going around the car and everyone has to name a jam band, if you can't think of one then yr out).

The line nza quoted makes me want to cry while pulling the flesh off my bones.

They were, I think, the first show I saw in my freshman year of college and the only show I ever saw at The Wetlands. I was driven there in a green 60s VW Bus, bead curtains and all, whose owner really, honestly referred to it as "The Shaggin Wagon." I had gone to a mostly black high school. I had not been aware that there were still hippies at all, and seeing tripped-out String Cheese fans doing that dance where you kind of waddle around in a circle and wave your arms in front of your face was quite a culture shock.

On the way back, the VW owner was too stoned to drive but no one else knew how to drive stick. We went about 30 miles per hour the whole way home and nonetheless nearly crashed into a concrete median barrier.

I suppose, for this memory alone, although for no other reason musical or otherwise, they will always have a place in my heart.

I remember seeing a show where they opened for Medeski, Martin and Wood. It was very entertaining watching MMW completely, totally, utterly embarrass them.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

MMW have found a way to cleverly fool String Cheese fans into listening to good music.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Were you guys always String Cheese Incident? Did you have a different name at any point?

I think for maybe a month we were the Bluestring Experience, or something like that. But we very quickly became the String Cheese Incident.

Where does that name come from?

You know, it’s kind of secret actually. We don’t talk about it much. But it is based on an incident and the idea that every show is a new incident. That’s kind of the thing that’s made it stick. Every time we get together and play music, it’s an incident. You never know what’s going to happen. The relationship between the band and the crowd is important and dynamic. We thought that it all kind of worked with the incident (idea).

The downside is that with Jerry dead, Phish split-up, and now these guys, the homeless population is going to explode.

The show I really wanted to see that, as far as I know, never happened, was The Grassy Knoll/MMW/GOD.

13 years and I never heard a note of their music.

So sad.

Is that photo above Widespread Panic?

I never realized their name was so literal.

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 08:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha, that was my exact thought when I saw the photo - "widespread indeed!"

WP makes SCI sound like MMW. I hates me some Panic.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 15:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh god, you've made me think of the worst mashup ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

So ... Phish broke up, and now SCI broke up. Now, if Phil Lesh shares the stage with Bill Nershi and Trey Anastasio with Kuroda doing lights, THE BRAHPHECY WILL BE FULFILLED.
