they've been around a hell of a long time now (although i haven't heard anything on this label since about 95)

loved the generic sleeves (the silver and blue, not the uk outer rhythm black and blue ones), but what about the recs?

i think they saturated the market, released too much, but i like the following

PCPEP - a marc acardipane/mover 12, frontal sickness' nightflight non stop to kaos whatever, still amazing today (i heard Fabio play this at 8am at Tribal Gathering 93 - in the jungle tent!! having said that, it was a looong and heavy night, and my faculties were debilitated by this point (um, i was beginning to go loopy)

Ravesignal III - horsepower. cjbolland, when he was good. mentioned in that denim song (they wuz down wit da ravers). big helicopter sound

beltram - energy flash. well, duh

i'm not that fussed by r&s era aphex, although polynomial c is quite nice, the purple record (mescalinium united rmxs) is well harsh

patrick puslingers dogmatic sequences 2, is too acidjazzy, but theres one track on there thats good (citylights or something)

what else then?

69 - Rushed. Inescapable Carl Craig floor filler circa 93? 94?.

Ken Ishii - 'Extra'

Always had a weak spot for Model 500's 'Deep Space' album.

I haven't listened to them in quite a while, but I used to like the two Biosphere albs released on R&S, 'Microgravity' and 'Patashnik'.

Sonic Solution - "Turbulence" is very fast and liquid acid-y; one could easily imagine a boring Harthouse remix but this is great. It's as if Ricardo Villalobos did something much faster than usual.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

liked amongst others:
Locust's Weathered Well on their sub Apollo
69's Jam the Box
DJ Hell's my definition of house music
Jaydee's Plastic Dreams
Outlander's Vamp

but in fact there's too much to mention released on belgium's premier label...

simply adore Aphex's classics !

gone downhill after the releases of several "classics" compilations (dave angel, joey beltram, model 500), they still had some D&B experiments (cfr fyzical encounters compilations) and tried to hype acts like boom boom satelittes and nowadays they've become awfully quiet. Belgian duo Mo&Benoelie (known from the Eskimo compilations, anyone?) were setting up a new sub but this has been stopped and they took it to Eskimo recordings instead (eg the forthcoming Ray Mang album)

a+

They currently exist as a back catalogue label. Renaat bet the farm on Drum n' Bass in 95 and lost big time. They went from being one of the biggest indie-electronic labels in Europe to being nearly broke and marginal in a the space of two years. It doesnt help that they Renaat was a pretty shady businessman...but that is another thread.

hits include:

The House Of God by DHS

Dominator by Human Resource

Plastic Dreams by Jay Dee

Earth and Nightfall by John Beltran (Strong Recommendation)

Metaphor by Kenny Larkin (Strong Recommendation)

All the Model 500 stuff, especially Classics and Sonic Sunset

Quadrant EP by Quadrant (aka basic channel) (Strong Recommendation)

Power Of & by System 7 (aka Steve Hillage (gong) & Derrick May and Carl Craig) (has its moments...)

Also check out the Apollo sublabel. Tons of goodies, but that is a thread in and of itself.

wasn't global cuts an r&s spin off? in which case, capricorns 20hz wasn't bad, with the clattering drums falling down the stairs thing going on, moving towards that later harthouse/eye-q sound there though i guess

revive, because R&S itself seems to be back as a going concern - that radio slave record from a couple months ago, and now there's a remix 12" ('plastic dreams' and 'mentasm' touched up by audion and redshape, respectively - haven't heard either of those yet, tho). also, did stirmonster say on another thread that he's doing some sort of R&S classics mix for them??

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:16 (fourteen years ago) link

no outlander huh. too obvious/overused?

butter tickle (tricky), Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Energy Flash & Plastic Dreams are way more obvious/overused than Outlander so I doubt that was a concern.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

No "Stella" too.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

it wasn't originally going to include "energy flash" as although it means a great deal to me, after hearing it approx. 10 000 times, i don't really need to hear it again. however, i felt it was such a seminal R&S release that it had to be included, so it makes a brief appearance layered under another track and has been severely cut up. the mix ends with "plastic dreams" as that was more or less my jumping off point with regard to R&S and it was also the track that took them to a global audience so i felt it was fitting for the mix to end there. also, the cd was put together with people who know nothing about R&S in mind rather than for people on a nostalgia / back in the day trip. as "vamp" is still played relentlessly in discotheques everywhere i didn't really feel the need to include it. it is after all not meant to be an R&S greatest hits mix but rather my favourite moments from the back catalogue (some of which the rights were sadly no longer available for).

ps - the chords from "stella" are in there. i guess maybe it needs to be listened to rather than analysed from reading the tracklisting. :-)

stirmonster, Thursday, 21 May 2009 21:14 (fourteen years ago) link

ps - here's a wee "beltram bonus beats" outtake if anyone's interested - https://download.yousendit.com/U0d4OU1lYStCSWRMWEE9PQ

stirmonster, Thursday, 21 May 2009 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

true true brotherlovesdub. "vamp" is a personal fave, so i immediately noticed its omission.

if all of these are edits, i am going to enjoy this immensely. [went and checked the r&s site and it appears that there are only a "handful of edits".]

xp, ooooh

butter tickle (tricky), Thursday, 21 May 2009 21:24 (fourteen years ago) link

they chose the "edit" title. i wanted to call it "this was belgium". everything was edited but they're not all edits if that makes sense.

stirmonster, Thursday, 21 May 2009 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

nice bonus beats! i am going to attempt to use them in a mix. there's the outlander!

xp, sure does, i like your title better.

butter tickle (tricky), Thursday, 21 May 2009 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link

thanks for the info + bonus beats. very much appreciated. eager to hear the official mix.

just listning to second phase mentasm/mind to mind 12 inch last nite. muzique & beltram thing.

i was always happy when i found random old stuff on r&s in the used bin. i knew it would be interesting somehow.

this is way cool:

I mean if you still want it it's been released as "In Order To Edit" by Optimo. I came to post on this thread asking R&S had ever released any good compilations or retrospectives but I guess this Optimo mix (which prompted me) is already it.

Hello people - just to reiterate and be 100% clear: I have left R&S Records and am currently in the process of signing to a new label. I deplore any / all forms of racism and think everything about this situation is awful. Love to you all x
