I Just Called To Say I Love You - Classic or Dud?

Have we done this before? It's widely recognised as Stevie's black mark on his career, a sappy, crappy song that everyone hates. But I love it. The lyric is a fantastic idea - listing all the occasions that he ISN'T celebrating and then the memorable chorus. The vocodered section on some versions is warm and fuzzy. I just like it and place it up there with a lot of his canonical stuff from the 70s. Yes it's a bit sappy and sentimental, but so are Golden Lady and Sunshine Of My Life.

A good idea that earned him a lot of money, lost him his credibility, and in a longer term ruined his career.

I used to like it at 13 though. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 October 2006 21:08 (seventeen years ago) link

but why do people hate it so much? i guess i'm a bit young to have noticed its overexposure. I love the sort of warm paddy chords and the "dock of the bay" bassline.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Saturday, 21 October 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I think overexposure is the keyword here.

"Part Time Lover" was still way worse though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 October 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Classic. It seems kind of silly to deride a Stevie Wonder song as "sappy and sentimental." Part of Stevie's immense talent has been making sappy, sentimental songs that are absolutely classic.

Not one of his greatest songs, but still great.

Glad to see some love for this. I like it a lot, too. Graf OTM.

PappaWheelie, don't fuck this up (PappaWheelie 2), Sunday, 22 October 2006 02:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Classic. If the lyrics had been anything else, it would be on everyone's Stevie top 10. Some people can't get past the cheese, but I don't mind.

musically (musically), Sunday, 22 October 2006 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

A corny Stevie Wonder song is one thing, a corny Stevie Wonder with the horrible 1980s pop production is another.

It's funny, Stevie Wonder was one of the first people to really use synths and vocoder's well in a pop song, and yet with this song he manages to use them in the most clichèd and cheesy ways, like he's never used them before.

My Imperfect Cousin (MIC), Sunday, 22 October 2006 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't say that I totally hate it.

piotr (pyotreck), Sunday, 22 October 2006 12:59 (seventeen years ago) link

whitney houston is awesome, wtf

I have no idea what Stevie Wonder is thinking with this kind of thing - I mean, the depth of his power from "Fingertips" right on through Hotter Than July, he seemed to have total magic at his command - corny lyrics weren't exactly anathema to him, but he could put them across in a rather cooler way. "I Just Called" is just so dull - all the character and energy that I associate with Stevie Wonder is missing, and the keyboards are yawnsome too. I blame the guy who wrote the lyrics to "Power Flower" on Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants, I think he infected SW with his new age powers.

Dud.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 22 October 2006 14:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Dud. Even the other sappy ballads of this period "Lately," "Ribbon in the Sky," fuckin' "Love Light in Flight," and "Overjoyed" are superior.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 22 October 2006 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Overjoyed is fucking awesome.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Sunday, 22 October 2006 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

No, not "Overjoyed", but "Ribbon in the Sky" is great and "Lately" is one of the best things he ever did, which is saying something. Oh, and "Rocket Love" is awesome too.

Rodney is a group! (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 22 October 2006 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Hotter Than July generally is much better than the benchmark praise it usually gets (it's the Scary Monsters/Some Girls/Blood on the Tracks of his career).

"Whitney Houston is awesome" -
perhaps
but if you could banish "I will always love you" from the world, you would, wouldnt you, for all our sakes?

I mean whoever managed to purge the world of that song would be a hero in my book.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 22 October 2006 22:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Well. It's a better tune than "Love is Like a Butterfly" at any rate.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 22 October 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

but if you could banish "I will always love you" from the world, you would, wouldnt you, for all our sakes?

Banishing everything Whitney Houston has ever recorded, other than "Saving All My Love For You" and "How Will I Know" (both of which were great pop singles), is the only thing that would have been sufficient.

Same about everything Mariah Carey has ever recorded. Particularly her most recent material.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 22 October 2006 22:33 (seventeen years ago) link

The song is genius for the way it presaged the "demo" button feature on cheap keyboards. Stevie Wonder: always the pioneer.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 23 October 2006 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I am reasonably certain the demo button has always been on cheap keyboards.

I like this song but "Overjoyed" thoroughly kicks its ass. Also, Whitney Houston has done some terrific songs but she herself is a horrorshow.

re stevie using pre-sets and stuff. you know, stevie wonder wasn't the ONLY guy who mastered 70s synths and then stumbled a bit when technology went ballistic in the 80s. see also gary numan and kraftwerk (electric cafe, anyone?).

again, i am puzzled by the hate that this song engenders. i think that it's a pleasant, lightweight song -- and THAT'S IT. nothing to get excited about either way, and certainly not deserving of its "OMIGOD THIS IS THE WORST DRECK IMAGINABLE!" reputation that it's gotten in some circles.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 23 October 2006 06:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The hatred was triggered by the massive popularity of the song.

I don't actually like Hotter Than July that much. I almost never listen to anything other than "Rocket Love" "Master Blaster Jammin'" and "Lately". As much as I appreciate the sentiments, "Happy Birthday" is dire.

And re: of Electric Cafe, I've never heard the album, but "Musique Non-Stop" and its video are awesome.

I only got HTJ a couple of months ago and was glad I did; it's certainly a better record than Songs in the Key of Life, but then again, I'm a Talking Book fan. Near-classic for: "Rocket Love," "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me," "Master Blaster," "Lately," and "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It."

I don't dislike this song. It's pure sap, but the verses are pretty. Also, I believe that it was Oscar nominated for the forgotten Gene Wilder comedy The Woman in Red.

"Part Time Lover" absolutely sucks, though.

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Monday, 21 May 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

It WON the Oscar, and against some crazy popular competition.

"Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)," Phil Collins
"Footloose," Kenny Loggins & Dean Pitchford
"Ghostbusters," Ray Parker Jr.
"I Just Called to Say I Love You," Stevie Wonder
"Let's Hear It for the Boy," Tom Snow & Pitchford

Yes, "I Just Called To Say I Love You" may be the worst song in that lineup, and any single one of Purple Rain's songs should've been there in its place. But I'm still happy to think of Stevie as an Oscar winner. Just wish it could've been for something from Jungle Fever.

Listened this morning, and totally agree!

Also listened to "Love Light in Flight" for the first time in a few decades, which might be the best of the Woman in Red singles, balancing the synth synths with such strong vocals:

I love that "Love Light in Flight" has the word "autopilot" in its lyrics, while using the presets that (I can't remember which but) either Margouleff or Cecil derided him for relying on.

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 12:52 (five years ago) link

Actually, I take it back, it's an OK sentimental song. I used to think Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney were both relatively unique for having written many of the best songs of all time as well as many of the worst, but Paul is sooooo much worse on this front.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 12:53 (five years ago) link

Speaking of those two: 'What's That You're Doing' off of McCartney's 'Tug Of War' album (which also features the execrable 'Ebony & Ivory') is an absolute barnstormer and would have made a much better single
