I would imagine that there are probably some songs that were recorded by bands that have long since split up, which are then used in a advert or film and become hits.

I suppose on example would be the 5,6,7,8s - they formed in 1986 and their first UK hit wasn't until 2003 with 'Woo Hoo' after Kill Bill. They might have had hits in Japan before, however, and I@m sure there are some better examples.
