I don't know too many, but I feel like classical covers are neglected in our other threads.

There's a Mahler cover from the 60s that is fantastic, but I can't find it. Anyone? It's very, er, mathematic..

Here's the most mathematic Mahler there is...from 78 though.

yea, that designer is awesome. judging from the font, i think he's also the guy that did the illustrations for the most recent issue of Krauss' Ring Cycle.

you should check out the record, too, if you don't know the music. It's the best Cage collection I've heard / seen available.

Will do! There are, however, many pretty great collections of his music, I reckon. The 3-CD "25 year retrospective", the "Etude Australes" whose record cover I posted at the top...

Is Alex Steinweiss not considered awesome for some reason? Apparently, he's the guy who came up with the idea of "album cover art" and his style seems like the template for every battered 40s/50s classical cover I've ever seen in a thrift store. Those covers never made much of an impression in that context, but the crisp images on this site have definitely got me attention (sorry, don't know how to embed flickr images):

There was a great piece on classical album art in the psychedelic era on the All Music blog quite a while back.

Of course, the terrible new redesign of the site makes finding old blog posts impossible, so sorry.

Starker was pretty photogenic in an Intense Artist kind of way.

The Reiner Bartok is all-time. I also love the cover for his Das Lied Von der Erde.

That era of DG Karajan covers (70s to early 80s) were unremittingly awful but inescapably lol.

I have a soft spot for the very 1960s designs of the World Record Club. UK/Aus mailorder operation with regional in-house designs for licenced recordings. They're some of the most common sights in charity store bins here and are sometimes more striking than expected.

eg. some of the first few I found online just now

I bought this box of Shostakovich symphonies purely based on the cover art (and the price at the time). Good thing it rules.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 21:18 (three years ago) link

It's not the most idiomatic set by any means but it's my favourite Western take on Shosty's symphonies, by far. Even the 14th, with its (imo) ill-advised move away from Russian, is incredible thanks to Julia Varady and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's contributions. And if you like the 14th, it's also worth hearing the Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarotti, which is sometimes called Shostakovich's 16th symphony.

Not entirely sure of the chronology but I guess it's possible that World Record Club and Sonic Youth were BOTH ripping off this series:

I still quite like Kairos's CD covers. Variations on a very limited number of themes, I guess, but my eyes often linger...
