OTM. Bought Show Me Your Tears on the off-chance - cripes. Meandering, maudlin, featureless dullsville pseudo-country.

Search: "Bullet" off Dog in the Sand. Maybe the best song he's ever done.

"Velvety" from Devil's Workshop is pretty great. Except for the fact that it's called "Velvety," of course.

The entirety of Dog In The Sand is pretty enjoyable.

Oh, and the "Frank Black Francis" compilation, too.

S: Bad Harmony / Pistolero
Honeycomb and Fast Man are pleasant enough, haven't made up my mind yet.

bendy: There is something incredibly powerful about that song, isn't there? Maybe not all men would agree.

relaxing (relaxing), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

It's in the bassline.

Still prefer Teenager of the Year to any Pixies record.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

relaxing: yeah, the lyrics of "Bullet" could come across as corny, but the restraint in his vocals make the drama seem matter-of-fact. Frank has got a lot of chaff out there, but I think at any given moment he can return to form. He's had the right amount of success to keep him writing, but keep him hungry too.

s: i really enjoyed most of 'dog in the sand' when it came out, and while i rarely seek it out, i'm always happy when 'bullet' or 'st francis dam disaster' or 'stupid me' come up on shuffle. i think i got it at the right time, and i have good memories of it.

d: everything else has left me really bored, but to be frank (oh!) i've never really listened closely.

this is kinda the music corollory of 'all politics is local.'

The "rock songs" version of The Golem is pretty good! First time I've been excited about a Frank Black/Black Francis thing since Dog in the Sand.

yeah I'm really digging this. love "Miriam and Florian" and "bad news".
this is my favorite thing he's done in awhile.

Those are nice, yeah. I don't dislike any of the songs on here, but I think my favorite run is Astaroth->The Obedient Servant->The Maharal.

o. nate, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

haven't heard golem, but his bluefinger album from a year or two ago was surprisingly strong.
still listen to the first 3 solo albms a lot.

"Threshold Apprehension" from bluefinger came on the other day in a mix, and I was thinking Mclusky? Beastie Boys? I had a FB sense about it, and was happy it was him. Great song. It made me more inclined to comb through his later releases.

i used to like that one - getting old is a bitch - bluefinger is his most pixies-like thing i reckon

Thankyou, I'm very saddened by how many think it's a bad album (just confirmed by looking at reviews), I think it's brilliant and essential but just not quite as good as the previous two. But you need it!

Also sad: no mentions in the recent early 90s polls and surprisingly short threads here. I've got 14 of his albums, if I had to recommend some after the first 3, it would be Dog In The Sand, I find most everything else a mixed bag. Pistolero has some fun, the first Catholics album is great in the first half.
As much as I'm eager to boost/defend some of his stuff, I'm not that interested in hearing the newer albums, whether solo, Grand Duchy of even new Pixies. Maybe some years down the line. But I will be getting Oddballs soon, wanted to hear that for years.

Got Black Session recently (French live show from 94) and it just seems okay so far, will give it a few more spins. But there's lots of lyrics I never noticed before, this inspired me to read the lyrics for some early songs and they are amusingly incomprehensible (particularly "Thalassocracy").

Genuinely surprised by the dislike for "I Don't Want To Hurt You (Every Single Time)", I think it's lovely.

"Out of State" on Devil's Workshop is one of his better later-ish songs.
