"Uptight," by Disco 2000: WTF?

"Uptight," by Disco 2000, released 1989 by KLF Communications. One of the girls is Jimi Cauty's wife. The question: Is this a "Yes dear, if it will make you happy you can cut a single and Bill and I will promote it" vanity project, or a genuinely good record? Or is this just an enormous joke at my expense by the KLF? Or is it, perhaps, all three? A quick listen could easily put aside any doubt in my mind, but there is no record player at Cheapo Discs and these days choosing between a pack of cigarettes and a dodgy acid-house 12" is not as easy as it used to be.

Is it worth the $3.95, or should I just buy that "Last Train to Trancentral Meets the Moody Boys Uptown" single I've been eyeing?

it's rubbish. buy the moody boys instead.

A great deal of the KLF Comm stuff is rubbish, really - but that was part of the deal. You were buying a prank that every so often also turned out to be an unfathomably beautiful pop record.

At the height of KLF hipster-geek mania, you might have paid $39.50 for that same record. I imagine putting the KLF on eBay nowadays would be akin to trading a Fairlight Series III for a skateboard.

Disco 2000 are the only rub KLF records apart from Kylie Said To Jason (and neither are awful, the remixes of the latter are OK and the former was just a half-arsed stab at SAW-style pop).

I loved "Kylie Said to Jason." It's no "Justified and Ancient", but it beats the tar out of "It's Grim Up North" or "Whitney Joins the JAMs".

'kylie said to jason' is sheer pop perfection you mad people.

It's Grim Up North is possibly the best thing they did apart from Chill Out!

its grim up north holds 2 special places in my heart.

1. i bought it on the morning of my wedding. priorities people.

2. i come from ilkley, and as i fucking hate that 'on ilkley moor.. ' track, it was great to have something else that mentions the place, especially a record as glorious as that.

It's an early KLF track, back when they were more "create pop records" than "ironists". This and the Kylie track were pretty much at the same time. (There's a video for "Uptight" which is very pepsie and shirlie)

When both flopped, they had a rethink. The rest you know.

.. or maybe "Trying too hard to be ironists" ..

I had this. It was shit.

I wish I'd bought the bootleg of "It's Grim Up North" that only mentioned places in Northumberland (where I'm from.) That's proper north.

The original version was Pete Wylie speaking.

"it's Grim up North" is easily the best thing to come from the KLF
