Let's talk about Dead (Mayhem)'s death photo. (warning: brains inside)

Ok, what in the sam hill is that black shit on his neck?

And why is the knife in the picture on TOP of the shotgun? Surely this is from Euronymous's purported shenanigans after Dead's death. Still ooky wooky.

the relevant Wikipedia entry:

By April 1991, Dead was dead, aged 22, having suffered a self-administered shotgun wound to the head and several lacerations to the wrists, inflicted by a hunting knife he had bought that day. He killed himself in a house he shared with the other members of the band in Kråkstad. Apparently he left a note saying "Excuse all the blood." Euronymous took photos of Dead's corpse upon discovering him.

According to Stian Johannsen, who briefly took position as vocalist after Dead's suicide:

"He (Dead) didn't see himself as human; he saw himself as a creature from another world. He said he had many visions that his blood has frozen in his veins, that he was dead. That is the reason he took that name. He knew he would die..."

The ammo used had been sent to him by Bergen, Norway musician Kristian Vikernes (aka Varg Vikernes, Count Grishnackh; ex Old Funeral, sole member of black metal band Burzum, later convicted murderer of Euronymous). Euronymous took a number of polaroids at the scene, some of which later appeared in the booklet of the subsequent Mayhem bootleg Dawn of the Black Hearts. Euronymous was particularly cold and opportunistic about Dead's suicide; in interviews he claimed, speciously, that Dead had killed himself due to the rising popularity of death metal, the American movement Black Metal had risen against. He also claimed to have collected and forged fragments of Dead's skull into necklaces, sending pieces to those he felt 'worthy'.

this photo reminds me that i haven't put 'live in leipzig' on my ipod yet. haven't listened to it in years, but have a creepy urge to listen to it now.

i'm gonna listen to a couple of tracks from 'a grand declaration of war' as a compromise. the songs off that record were wicked life. so was 'from the dark past' come to that.

anyhoo, perhaps my favourite mayhem story, out of a back caltalogue of absolute zingers, is the news that maniac quit the band to settle down with his christian missus.

As 2am looms at the Spellemannprisen aftershow party, held in the opulent Grand Hotel in Oslo, Annie kicks off her spearmint-green high heels. It has taken a good hour for her to cross the party, receiving congratulations and dispensing bright "hellos" to acquaintances including Necrobutcher, bassist of notorious black metal outfit Mayhem.

StanM, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Annie was 14 when Varg Vikernes was arrested for Euronymous's murder. I guess it still could've been possible that they dated before that (Vikernes was himself only 19 then), but I'm not sure how likely that is.

roxymuzak, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

High school thing, probably - she only moved to Bergen when she was 13, according to Wikipedia again. So it must have been when she was between 13-15, if it really happened.

StanM, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Vikernes was already in jail when she turned 15.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

If he set that church on fire in 1992, then that may have happened while he was having a high school relationship with ... (uh oh, do you think that's why this is so hard to find?)

StanM, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

doesnt he talk about having a gf at the time of the murder who had an apt and went to techno clubs or something? that would give me the idea that she was older.

I've heard Varg talking about having a predilection for "nice" girls who were completely outside of the metal scene. If she was into Mayhem, this would exclude her (although of course she could have and probably would have gotten into it afterwards).

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 11:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Scandinavian?

aldo, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 11:34 (sixteen years ago) link

He was older than (18?), so they could give him the maximum sentence, which is 21 years in Norway.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Technically, what roxy said is right, but not literally (you don't get 23 years if you kill someone while you're 23, for instance)

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 11:46 (sixteen years ago) link

To clear up the confusion: according to Vakernes's Wiki page he was 19 in January 1993 when arrested for Euronymous's murder (though he turned 20 the next month), but I guess when he was finally convicted he'd already turned 21, since the court process takes time. Still, I doubt any potential Annie-dating would have happened between his arrest and conviction, so if it's true it must've happened before the arrest, whe Annie was 14 or younger. Which is why I doubt it happened at all.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 12:14 (sixteen years ago) link

You're right. Varg would never flout popular morality.
