"27/04/2006 - Joni Mitchell - Three Expanded Remasters
New prices - now £11.99 each. 3 Classic albums from Joni Mitchell are being remastered and expanded for a projected July 10th release: 'Court And Spark' (1974), 'The Hissing Of Summer Lawns' (from 1975) and 'Hejira' (1976) will be expanded into 2 CD sets and will cost £11.99 each. This is very early information so release dates may slip."

anybody know anything about these?

the date has obviously been and gone...

are these for real? what can possibly be on the bonus discs of these editions?

I would assume they'd be coming out through Rhino but there's nothing on their site yet. I had a quick look at JM's forum and there's scant mentions of these as well..

damn.. these sounds great... I got the Hissing demos and they're almost as good as the finished album... I wonder if these were gonna be featured on the expanded edition..

These are three albums (along with Mingus and maybe a couple of others) which were supposed to reissued in HDCD remastered form around '99 and, in the UK at least, never were. There were even "Remastered HDCD" stickers on some of the CDs in the racks but they were the late '80s originals. Some did make it out on HDCD ("Don Juan", "Ladies of the Canyon").

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 25 August 2006 21:37 (thirteen years ago) link

my Court & Spark and Hissing are both HDCD - stamped on the disc and clearly superior to the previous CD issues I had... both US manufactured.

cannot find Hejira HDCD though...

so have they held back the HDCD editions in the UK to make way for these expanded editions? any ideas what the bonus material will be for C&S and Hejira?

Kirk Degiorgio (Kirk), Friday, 25 August 2006 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

tell me about these 'hissing' demos! i had no idea that such things existed.

Ah, right - those albums did come out as HDCD remasters in the US, but it must be five or six years ago now. I have no idea why they weren't made available in Europe (though the stickers erroneously appeared on some stock). Summer Lawns is supposed to be a particularly good remastering job. No hissing, y'see.

If the 2CD sets are full price, I may take my chances with and get the HDCD versions from the States (though, with shipping, Court plus Summer Lawns is $31...)

twelve years pass...

These remasters never came out did they? Could it be they were lost in the great Universal fire?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 11 July 2019 08:28 (four months ago) link

Well, I can live without outtakes from such brilliant albums, but I think a few sonic upgrades may be possible and it would suck if the masters don’t exist.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 11 July 2019 10:26 (four months ago) link

yeah, phooey on the outtakes

These albums are with Warner Music, so they wouldn't have been in the fire. Mitchell's Geffen catalogue tapes were probably lost though.

some were def remastered for HDCD, like this:

Off topic, but Asylum Records has always meant Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne in my mind. I had no idea they were rebranded in 2004 and that the label looks like this.

God, I'm old...
