what are your favourite rave/club tapes?

i've got:
Easygroove ~ Fantazia 1992 (old skool breakbeat hardcore, come wid it!)

Dave Angel ~ Orbit, Morley - April 1993 (techno, not austere though - koenig cylinders, red planet etc - loads of stuff on here i don't know what it is, a lot of the stuff on here is stuff really quite different to anything before or after)

Joey Beltram ~ Orbit, Morley - May 1993 (starts off minimal, gets pretty ruff later on)

did have Lenny Dee from some gabba party in sheffield, but seem to have lost it ("i smell the blood of an english muffin!"), and also a DJ Sy one from some Ark night in leeds which i dont have any more either. wished i'd held on to some of these now, i really do

what about you?

gareth, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry to cut in on your thread but Gareth you might be able to help me. Do you know a track which has the (odd) lyrics "me and my daddy wer share the same dream it's still bein' at school, it's a nightmare". It's sort of electro I guess, and it's hard for me to tell if it's some really old song or some really new song since it's the sort of stuff that is now fashionable again. David Holmes played it. Sorry, just I've asked everyone I know, and none of them could tell me, so ILM is my final hope.

Going back to the question, I think I missed the tape thing sadly. ALthough I suppose it wouldn't be too late to start. Dave Angel is playing here in a few weeks, apparently he's sort of earbleed techno now. I may abstain.

Ronan, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My most favourite favourite ever was Digs and Woosh at Castlemorton which I lost a couple of years ago, and if anyone has any idea where I could get a replacement I'd be eternally grateful.

Out ot the ones I've still got, I have quite a few American tapes from 94-95 when I was over there. My favourite out of those is Jeno (Wicked soundsystem) - "Bang the drum" which I don't think is actually a live tape, though it sounds exactly like one of his live sets from the time. Sparkly, bubbly but soulful house with odd bits.

On the british side, I love my DJ Brisk tape from some unknown happy hardcore rave in the mid-90s. It's got Airhead and Toytown on it, and is very fun and bouncy.

jacob, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Ronan - the track is 'Share the same Dream' by Taylor Savvy, an new nu-electro track. See the thread above this one, and also go to Skykicking for the lowdown on Taylor Savvy...

Robin, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My favourite is a Paul Daley at the Mazzo (Amsterdam, 1994?) tape. Esp. the section that goes from 'Red2' to 'Spastik' to 'Aceperience'. Also has Daft Punk's 'Alive' on it.

Now it's my turn for an track ID. The tape ends with an amazing track which starts off with a woman's voice saying "es como la cocaina" and then evolves into a banging tune with voices mixed through going "coca". Sounds a bit lame but it's great. Anyone?

Omar, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

cant help i'm afraid, but i can weigh in with another track id. its from about 92, and sounds quite dutch. theres a hispanic type voice, i cant quite remember what it says, something like "encima", and theres a blocky neutered mentasm, imagine a d-jaxized/trackier version of dutch rave. for a while i thought it was hablando by ramirez but that seems to be something completely different?

gareth, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My fave club tape is a gabba/'aardkore one i have, which has a track containing a sped up chorus from kate bush' "wuthering heights" and a track with a little girl saying "hardcore motherfucker...h.h.h.hardcore motherfucker" again & again The beats are so distorted the all sound the same "beeeyownbeeeyownbeeeyownbeeeyown" etc etc etc. You can hear an demented M/C jabbering over the top, but cannot understand a word of what he's on about. I think i was recorded in Gateshead or Newcastle beack in the 1990s. Similar music is still hot in Carlisle and Prudhoe apparently. My studio owner friend has a gabba/'aardcoree VIDEO! It was mixed live over s.th like a 7hr set, and consists of INCREDIBLY eye-popping computer graphics which induce trance states in the viewer. I like DJ mixtapes, and I think this is the best way to hear this musick.

Norman Phay, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i dug out an old rave tape by Turban8r X called ^holy war - you know the score^ it has a stompin beat with a sitars doing octaves on top and TX yellin ^bakedbeans, fifteenpee - benwell, rushin-hard in tha golden temple - tigers gan mental^.

individual tracks and posting them, in the hope that siegbran or stirmonster might be able to ID

its funny, when it seems every aspect of dance music has been combed over, reappraised, stuck on best ofs, and, yet, this tape, loads still to id

Re. the 'vacant spacey one'. I was never into going to clubs that played that kind of music but it reminds me of listening to Colin Dale's show that used to be on in the small hours on Kiss FM around 89-93. I used to love listening to that show..lying in bed..falling asleep..waking up again. Not sure if it's exactly the kind of record that Dale would have played but it seems to be in that area from what I can remember.

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

sheesh! i forgot dave angel played so fast!

the 'ravey electroclash' one i used to play but i can't for the life of me remember what it is. i'm pretty certain it's a berlin rave track - westbam, something on low spirit or something by mijk van dijk. most of my records from this era are stored in my garage but i'll try to have a route through sometime soon to see if i can find out for you.

the 'vacant spacey one' - i have no idea. sounds like it might have been on esp. nico?

the 'long acid one' sounds like it was a labworks 12" but again, i'm not sure. sorry for not being much help but this particular era is all a bit of a blur to say the least and not one i'm particularly fond of revisiting. saying that, i played 'carousel' by koenig cylinders out the other week and it still sounds immense (even if i did have to have it pitched down as far as it would go).

stirmonster, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
finally routed through some old records.

the 'ravey electroclash' one is - 'natural high' by loopzone on mfs records from '92 and it is by mijk van dijk with some dude called henry.

stirmonster, Sunday, 18 July 2004 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, the stupid thing is, i actually knew that! and then forgot, i just bought it.

i even started a loopzone thread a while back, and forgot about that too

one year passes...
I need a mix ID

I'm going through my old CD collection and many of them aren't labeled.
I found two that say "Rave" on the front and nothing else.
I had (have) little concept, knowlegde, of subgenre, though, so probably isn't all "rave." I made this probably 2000, but it's I think its 90s music. Most of it was just whatever I could download to dance to and I liked the hooks. I'm sure these are easy IDs because I believe I got them through Napster and they were probably fairly common "fun"tracks .
I'm just curious about the artists and titles also because some of the tracks seem lower quality and I wonder where I might go out and find (buy) some of this stuff again.

I have the mix uploaded,
and they were individual on the cd but i just connected them simple so I could upload it at once.

and here's also a quick description of the songs.

1. Rave version of "Eternal Flame"
2. A guy says "Dance Your Ass Off to This Funky Music" and then says "Dance your ass ass off" the rest of the song.
3. Something spanish that I know says "Estoy el mundo / en ese segundo / la [macha?] empieza [something something]" and then "Arriba con los brazos / Vamos [amo?]'
4. A man's pilot voice says "....Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Zero...Ignition".
5. "Discoland" "Take me up up up and away." (Tiny Tot?)
6. The song starts and then begins to build, and about 20 seconds in there's a pause for a robotic voice to say, "Techno" and then the rave goes in.
7. [a wordless tune]
8. Tune of "My Heart Will Go On" combined with what sounds like this DJ Tiesto song that I can't recall the name of. "Open your eyes," maybe?
and right at the end when it says "ocean of memories" for the 2nd time, that's fades into the next track which is
9. [wordless tune / instrumental bleepage]
10. A man's voice says "I close my eyes" and there's sort of a light chorus of voices echoing around the words before the build back into the song.
11. The track starts, there's a violin-ish synth that builds up, and then a male-like voice sounds like it says a distorted "rawr" and then echoes (rawr rawr rawr rawr). And then later there's a female voice that repeats what sounds like is "Rupert" or "Groove heart" or something. I think it's "rupert."
12. A woman's voice from what sounds like the UK says "We're Wicked, yeah."
13. [instrumental techno thing w/ piano]
14. [wordless tune]
15. This seems like a sped up mega mix/Happy Hardcore thing with the hooks of catchy songs. It starts out with a high pictched voice saying, "open your eyes, see all the love in me, I got enough forever." and after that song the next connected is "I am standing here in my field of dreams / the sun has passed me by it seems"
16. And then this is just a really hyperactive track.

Yes. Thanks.
Thank you :0
