Glad this is being brought up, having a real hard time reconciling Mustard-style beats, with the frequently vile attitude and sentiments on them.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 12:52 (nine years ago) link

that was what the hairpin piece responded to and correctly called inadequate precisely because it didn't acknowledge the responses

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

tbh i didn't read the hairpin piece, so am opening now.

i don't think writing about hit songs absolutely necessitates acknowledging mixtape freestyles, every hit song has those, pretty frequently ones that flip gender roles. if anything i feel like the real corrective to songs like "Loyal" being on the radio is having something like "Can't Raise A Man" on the radio at the same time.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

at least it seems a bit strict if the only legit way of criticizing "Loyal" is by doing a cover version with improved lyrics

niels, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:58 (nine years ago) link

no one is saying that

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

heh, I don't care enough about "Loyal" that it would have even occurred to me to seek out alternate versions

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

nice beat tho, glad to see someone making better use of it

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

my fav beat of the year easy

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

the few times it's gotten stuck in my head it's morphed into Ray J's "Sexy Can I," which is a better song by a somewhat less objectionable slimeball

some dude, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

fine point of gradation there

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

man "new flame" is a really bad song, wtf is that beat, sounds like something jim jonsin would make in between snores

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

It sounds pretty anemic @ home yeah but it's fucking great in the car after the umpteenth play of Believe Me

, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 00:36 (nine years ago) link

i like it in spite of myself

I've only heard it in the car and it sounded really good, just wish it was Usher & Usher f/ Usher

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 04:12 (nine years ago) link

I feel like he's been consistently churning out singles that would be good to great without him on it.

Greer, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 05:49 (nine years ago) link

Yeah p much. "Love More" had one of the most insane beats I've heard in a minute and I'm pissed as fuck at whoever produced it for giving it to him instead of anybody else.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 07:36 (nine years ago) link

actually kinda like "new flame," the shameless 2008iness is surprisingly charming

just wish it was Usher & Usher f/ Usher

this would be much better

dyl, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 03:15 (nine years ago) link

you guys hated on a bunch of good songs toward the end of this thread ('loyal' 'show me') (fuck 'cut her off' though) but 'new flame' is basic trash

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 05:11 (nine years ago) link

i like basic trash ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

dyl, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 06:30 (nine years ago) link

yeah that song is openly garbage

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 13:38 (nine years ago) link

the way the melody tracks that rinky dink beat is the hackiest thing

so I guess our man chris brown is a 'street artist' and has done some grafiti type stuff.. so when you visit the hallowed grammy museum in los angeles his stupid ass is the last thing you see before you leave because they have a piece he did of his influences.. prince -> james brown -> michael jackson -> chris brown

=(

its actually not so bad.. its like a smaller rnr hall of fame. but otherwise, yes guilty as charged.

At the end of the LA Times story about this, regarding an earlier unprovoked assault:

“Clearly, thus far, such extreme consequences, such as the loss of his career, court-mandated rehabilitation, and even jail time, have not deterred Brown’s conduct,” the complaint states. “Perhaps, this time, the imposition of punitive damages for his despicable and unforgivable conduct will.”

What fucking loss of his career?
