this should get ugly.
I mean, god bless miranda and all and she's dead on but when a white southern women tells a young black man to get back in his place and that she's got a shotgun
not that i got an issue! everybody else had their chance, let's let country get into it if rnb ain't gonna.

there's not and i wanna make it clear that i don't think there is
but i'd be shocked if facebook agrees with me and i'm not looking forward to a shit ton of dumbfuck "analysis" on this shortly.

shotgun rhetoric is alarmingly overblown but I am not American

Θ ̨Θƪ (sic), Monday, 20 February 2012 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

or because the shotgun is central to the song?

i haven't really seen this getting interpreted in a racial way anywhere else.

god be as angry as you want abt CB but rihanna can do whatever the fuck she wants w/ her life

Yeah, I'm not so sure I get this either. Write off Brown all you want, I did a long time ago, but it seems weird to turn on the victim here. Like, yes, maybe she's making some questionable decisions, but they are hers to make.

I was already completely done with Rihanna because I do not like her music

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 03:51 (twelve years ago) link

Well thats fair. Wrong. But fair.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 03:52 (twelve years ago) link

it makes me sad that they're back together but it's not exactly surprising. cycle of abuse iirc. i hope she gets out eventually.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 03:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah. not our place to tell a victim of domestic abuse what to do when processing and dealing with what happened to her.

especially when there are plenty of other people to blame/direct anger at - CB, naturally but also labels, management, anyone on the business side who encouraged this, general society at large (like, not us, but all the gossip mags etc.) who have been clamoring for some sort of a 'reunion'/'forgiveness' media story pretty much since it happened.

if we're that concerned about 'what kind of a message is she sending?!?!' etc. then there are plenty of other ways that people can get involved tangibly on domestic abuse issues - whether it's just fundraising and supporting shelters or something more direct. getting all superior @ rihanna about how she's dealing with this doesn't really help anyone, imo.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 03:54 (twelve years ago) link

not directed at anyone in particular - just seen a lot of blame/'concern' directed at rihanna over this in general across the internet.

yes and she can still do whatever the fuck she wants with her life. if young girls want to hang out with men who abused them in the past, they can do that too. it might not sit right with you but women don't deserve to be judged and shamed for it.

yeah & this is mostly whom I'm angry with.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 04:49 (twelve years ago) link

I just take issue with this "she can do whatever the fuck she wants with her life." No, musicians and public figures can't do whatever the fuck they want with their lives without copping shit for being irresponsible + sending inappropriate messages. I understand that she's a victim of abuse, but anyone who is saying "oh, she can do what she wants" is basically saying they are fine with this situation.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 04:50 (twelve years ago) link

it's not her responsibility to be a role model, man. people can be 'fine with the situation' because it's not really anyone's business. they're people too

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 04:53 (twelve years ago) link

ok, fine.

fuck pop music.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 04:53 (twelve years ago) link

I guess I misrepresented my position -- I'm not mad at Rihanna personally, I'm just frustrated that she lives in a world such that people are making her do things like work with Chris Brown. I seriously doubt she would have done this without serious pressure/encouragement.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:04 (twelve years ago) link

I seriously doubt she would have done this without serious pressure/encouragement.

this is not the impression I get at all

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:05 (twelve years ago) link

Thats a big-time projection xp. Who knows, really.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:05 (twelve years ago) link

but anyone who is saying "oh, she can do what she wants" is basically saying they are fine with this situation

but i am "fine with this situation", bc she's an adult who can make her own decisions based on what she wants and what she thinks is good for her, and she knows a lot more about her own life/situation than i do

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

I guess you guys have a more optimistic view of the pop star's role in his/her own career than I do.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

it isn't happening in a vacuum but that isn't an excuse to jump to the conclusion someone else is making the decision for her to hang out with him at her birthday party and w/e

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 05:32 (twelve years ago) link

its there whether she intends it to be or not

D-40, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 07:42 (twelve years ago) link

if she hadn't used 'in his place' -- which has specific racial connotations -- then it wouldn't but that's a p loaded phrase

otherwise shes completely otm, obv

D-40, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 07:43 (twelve years ago) link

rhianna's free to do what she wants with her life, but publicly embracing her abuser does send a fucked up message. not blaming her, but i am disappointed. such is life, i guess...

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 07:44 (twelve years ago) link

^ yeah, this is what I was going for. I agree that she can "do what she wants" in the sense of interacting with/hanging out with/being friends with Chris Brown in her own life + I don't think she should have to go out of her way to do this when the paparazzi's not looking. But recording a song with him and helping to buoy his career is the kind of thing where somewhere along the line someone should have said "this is a terrible idea and shouldn't happen." it seems disgustingly exploitative to me.
