recommend me some dance

theres probably a heap of threads similar to this one but my search proved fruitless. i'm out of the loop with recent dance stuff and i've been unimpressed with certain things i've heard (smagghe's fabric, weatherall's fabric mix, booka shade, justice)

stuff i do like:

shit robot - 'triumph'
'i feel space'
the lindstrom and prins album (which is even a wee bit too subdued for my liking but it's a album i find myself liking even more with each play)
the knife album , have isolee's album lying around somewhere but never got round to giving it a spin yet
fairmont - 'gazebo'
the odd mainstream floor filler like 'love generation'

The electrohouse and minimal house bobbins threads should sort you out nicely - hundreds of recommendations there.

Although if you don't like the Booka Shade album I fear there's nothing I can do for you.

Luxury Car

New electro band from Scotland, like a cross between early depeche mode, the knife and ladytron

shit robot is a horrible name. it's like giving up on the whole idea of having robot in your name. it's like, why even bother? so lazy. i'll bet that album is really lazy.

check Trentemoller, Michael. esp. 'Nam Nam', 'Polar Shift' and the Knife remixes.

debut album next month:

i loathe that name shit robot for the reasons scott stated but also because there are a heap of "robot" bands and, recenty, inexplicably, a load of "shit" bands too (shit disco, shitkatapult, others i've blocked out).

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:00 (seventeen years ago) link

if you can't have the proper respect for robots, then you shouldn't be making robot music. i am boycotting all future shit robot releases.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

why would anyone put the word shit in a band name?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

facedowninshit is another recent example. but they really do sound like they are playing and singing thru shit, so it kinda works for them...

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

anyway this is the dance album of the year

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

alright , fuck it i'm just going to brave it and ask what actually constitutes 'electro-house'? whats the definitve electro house tune? if weatheralls fabric mix is indicitive of that sound, then it's overly fussy to me. minimal house is like luciano's sci-fi mix right? (something i didnt quite have the patience for but i'll give it another lash sometime)

is there also a cd with all of thin white duke remixes? everything he does is pure gold

The name is from a crappy drawing of a robot that James Murphy did. And the 12" (not album, silly) is actually quite good, I think. Perhaps not the most original record I've heard, but there are definitely pretty fantastic moments. And it's the best DFA release as of recent.

Michael:
- Listen to the Isolee.
- Do you like Villalobos? Check out some of his newer tracks.
- Soylent Green's La Forza..
- Major Swellings (imagine Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, but without Lindstrom, and a much more pronounced disco-funk sound)
- Quiet Village (both remixes and singles)

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

whats the definitve electro house tune?

Weatherall's fabric mix does have some electro-house on it ... like that Marc Romboy vs. Booka Shade track

have isolee's album lying around somewhere but never got round to giving it a spin yet

this was one of the best electronic records of 2005 and it's really dense ... you could keep occupied for weeks just listening to this

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

even i like the isolee album and i hate everything.

ignore that comment.

as far as booka shade are concerned the fact that they are so well spoken of is indicative of the reasons i never really take recommendations.

Some dances I reccomend:

The Swim
The Monkey
The Funky Chicken
The Funky Robot
The Funky Braodway
The Regular Robot
Moonwalking around the preimeter of the club

Just a few...

omg martian's link to smalltownsupersound directed me to some new tussle stuff. 'Warning', what a fucking monster of a tune. i heart tussle.

trees, i have somewhat of an aversion to Villalobos after 'easy lee'.

trees, i have somewhat of an aversion to Villalobos after 'easy lee'.

So you're not into Alcachofa? I mean, that's fine... but it is admittedly difficult for me to understand how someone couldn't like that album. What else have you heard? 'Que Belle Epoque' might be a better place to start... or his remixes? The remix of Isolee's 'I Owe You' is a mind-melter.

But perhaps even a better question: what's wrong with 'Easy Lee'?

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 30 June 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

havent heard lacachofa at all, i always despised the way easy lee fucked up an otherwise flawless mayer fabric mix. just doesnt seem to go anywhere as a track, maybe too idm, bores me rigid, could never see the point of it always skip it compared to the greatness of 'i think about you' and 'mushroom'

Michael B (Michael B), Friday, 30 June 2006 04:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha ha if you think that "Easy Lee" doesn't go anywhere then villalobos probably isn't for you Michael.

Based on what you've said I get the impression you like stuff that's thick, poppy, melodic and mutational. So I would recommend:

This Track: Gabriel Ananda - "Ihre Personliche Glucksmelodie"
These DJ Mixes: M.A.N.D.Y. - Body Language; and Damian Lazarus - Rebel Futurism #2 (mind you both of these are a year old now)
And first and foremostly this downloadable DJ Mix: Sami Koivikko - Hot Pepper (go here)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 June 2006 06:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Also if you want a more propulsive version of the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas album, get the Prima Norsk 3 comp, which includes a lot of their stuff but is more consistently dancefloor oriented.

One of the most awesome dance songs......
Rex the dog remix of the knife heartbeats...check that out it's really good...

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 30 June 2006 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Marco Bailey - "Bollocks (Ananda remix)"
Modern Heads - "Treatment 1 (Donato Dozzy version)"
Pom Pom - 23, 24, 25
Goat Dance - "Sizzle"
Ananda/D'or - "Lauschgoldengel"
Ost & Kjex - "Kjexterminate"

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 30 June 2006 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The name is from a crappy drawing of a robot that James Murphy did.

Hahaha the fact that this sentence exists is hilarious to me.

Don't forget dj shitmat.

Probably like that One Night in Berlin mix.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 30 June 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah the One Night in Berlin mix is good!

Michael if you like the Koivikko mix you might also like Jeff Samuel's mix disc on the last Poker Flat comp, volume 4. it's similar to the first half of Hot Pepper. Unlikely, but true!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 June 2006 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I get the impression you like stuff that's thick, poppy, melodic and mutational

you summed up my taste in dance music better than i could there, tim! 'cept for the odd bit of ritchie hawtin. trentemoller's stuff is pretty good but unfortunately my crap speakers dont do it justice. 'sizzle' is on its tenth consecutive spin rite now.

Michael B (Michael B), Friday, 30 June 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

on the Shit Robot tip you should probably get an album called "Aimee Tallulah Is Hypnotised" by The Emperor Machine

tiga/ajax: in the mix

as far as booka shade are concerned the fact that they are so well spoken of is indicative of the reasons i never really take recommendations.

priding oneself on ignoring others is a route only to curmudgeonly behaviour.

"tiga/ajax: in the mix"

Is this good Ronan? I have looked at it but was afraid it would be too, I dunno, straight down the line electro-house the whole way through. But I'm kinda prejudiced against Aussie DJs (Ajax) in this regard so this may be baseless.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 June 2006 23:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Ronan, i guess not ALL others.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 June 2006 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

hopefully decent reply:

it WAS a curmudgeonly statement but also merely just an off the cuff/ hyperbolic one. you may think i'm a curmudeon and you wouldn't be all wrong just like i think you can be one at times and i wouldn't be all wrong either. but the fact that that post niggled me so much got me thinking, which is good. but here are posts on threads all over where i'm just hyperbolically excited and positive about stuff coming from every direction but you don't read those threads! (not an insult, they're mostly not dance threads [and i guess that's significant]).

FWIW, i think you're fantastic. you totally made mine & my friend sally's trip to Dublin last year a positive experience (in other ways it was a dud, for personal reasons). thanks!

i was going to email that last bit (as a peace offering) cos it's not relevant to the thread & also cos it's prob. v confusing for anyone else reading it, but what the hell.

peace out.

Jed, all cool, no worries, it was a snarky post from me also.

Tim yeah it's good, the Tiga mix anyhow, tho it is very much "electrohouse", I guess his Essential Mix is better actually but as far as released CDs go I suggested that one.

I sort of don't know why someone would be all electrohouse and no minimal now, it's actually hard to find the amount of good electrohouse records to do that now.

two years pass...

stuff ive been enjoying this year...

nu-balearica (must get that fred deakin comp)
