Saint Etienne - You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone

Okay, I know some will like it and some won't, but those that are fans of Saint Etienne, what do you think of this? For years I sort of dismissed it as a filler album, then some time last year I took the time to properly listen to it and its now second only to Tiger Bay in my affections. Do you like it?

I do.

Especially the acoustic song with the sound of distant rioting on the end..

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I was 'lucky' enough to get it free w/ So Tough.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

they have TWO albums named after Beach Boys albums?!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Why not!

And yes, I love this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link

good humor is named after the ice cream, as seen on the Pet Sounds cover, as well.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:04 (sixteen years ago) link

'sound of water' is named after the only thing heard after dennis slipped 'neath the waves

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

this is one of the few saint etienne albums i don't have. i'll probably get it really soon, though.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

and "Fox Base Alpha" is named after the secret Malibu bachelor pad that Mike Love shared with Dennis Wilson prior to their worldwide success...

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link

To be honest, I've never listened to it as an album. Isn't it pretty much irrelevant after 'Smash the System' came out.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not a singles comp, but more of a rarities comp

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:14 (sixteen years ago) link

or rather a non-album singles comp, actually. i think some of the singles found their way onto the american releases of albums.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Fucking ace. This album has some of their best stuff. I'd put it in my top 3 Et albums too.

1. Who Do You Think You Are
2. Archway People
3. California Snow Story
4. Kiss and Make Up
5. Duke Duvet
6. Filthy
7. Join Our Club
8. Paper
9. People Get Real
10. Some Place Else
11. Speedwell

everything (everything), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

wasn't the sleeve artwork of the promo cd of good humour based on some other previous 60s album too?

Shooz (shooz), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it's great but because i already knew the singles so intimately from their appearances on the first two "proper" albums (though yes in different versions) it's hard for me to think of this as an album as such. "Speedwell" is awesome - I love early Saint Etienne in balearic italo-house mode.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link

essential because it has "paper" featuring maurice deebank! also "archway people."

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

----"I love early Saint Etienne in balearic italo-house mode."

FUCKIN A. I love them in any mode but this rec kinda gets them right bang on when they were just right for the times etc, sad thinking about how out of them they are now cos of what it says about current times and YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES to "Archway People".

Alligator Man (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 04:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"Paper" seems like the perfect answer to "Only Love Can Break Your Heart".

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 10:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, Paper. Not Water, Paper.

I love early Saint Etienne in balearic italo-house mode

So this seems as good a thread as any to ask...

a *long* time ago, probably about the early to mid-90s, i was full on into Saint Etienne and also into the house/rave scene. i was at my local DJ shop and found a "white label" that actually had a printed up label, but looked a bit like a bootleg of sorts, and it was credited to Saint Etienne. The track is called "Deep in the Coast of the Exstasy" or something along those lines

i'm at work and haven't looked at the record for a while, but i've never seen anything even mentioning it w/r/t St Etienne in any of their discogs, etc. It's actually a really great deep house track, very italo pianos, balaeric vibe, etc. It reminds me of something Creation would have put out around the time (Like "Nena de Ibiza", etc)

Anyone ever see this or know what I'm taking about? No googling has seemed to help me out at all.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 11:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Probably doesn't top any proper Etienne LP for me, but this is good. Showcases their varied approaches to tunes at the time, and a great stopgap to hold us over after the wonderful "So Tough."

Couldn't get enough of 'Filthy' at the time. That bass! But as far as odds/ends collections, "Continental" still far and away holds the crown.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Great stuff ... ino largely because they put so much thought into their b-sides/extra tracks, a compilation of them would have to be good. Filthy - what a track!

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

speaking of St. Etienne odds n' ends comps, what do we think of Nice Price?

hank (hank s), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not really an album but a b-sides comp so yeah, people call it filler.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:07 (sixteen years ago) link

what is 'nice price'? amazon don;t seem to have it.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Nice Price is the demo/alternate version St. Etienne recently sold though their fan club...(I *gulp* joined just so I could buy it)'s quite good, certainly one can see how these versions didn't make their respective albums, but they're sufficiently different from the final versions to stand on their own (i.e. they don't feel or sound like demos)...probably copies can be found on eBay at this point...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:17 (sixteen years ago) link

It's still for sale through the merchandise link on their web site.

Shane (Shane), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

fourteen years pass...

Found an old CD I'd made at least a decade ago and had an idea that I might put it on Spotify. Seem to be lots of gaps on there though. For some reason it as called "Lovely is the New Edge" but quite why is blurry. I'm not sure there is much rhyme or reason but I always loved "You Need A Mess of Help".

1. (Not sure what this is but it is 1:19 in length)
2. Late Morning.
3. Anderson's Unbound
4/5/6. Western Wind
7. Is It True?
8. Downey CA
9. How We Used To Live
10. Seven Summers
11. Sylvie
12. Zip Code
13. Amateur
14. Finisterre
15. Swim Swan Swim
16. Heart Failed (Bridge & Tunnel)
17. Abby, I Hardly Knew You
18. The Process
19. Ivyhouse
20. Railway Jam
21. Relocate

djh, Thursday, 4 March 2021 21:40 (two years ago) link

Will try and fill gaps but here is what there is for now:

djh, Thursday, 4 March 2021 21:41 (two years ago) link

Lovely is the new edge is from the liner notes to Sound of Water

so tonight that I might ramona quimby (f. hazel), Thursday, 4 March 2021 22:11 (two years ago) link

And if the 1:19 is instrumental with some la-la vocals from Sarah it's probably Half-Timbered from Places to Visit

so tonight that I might ramona quimby (f. hazel), Thursday, 4 March 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

Oh, good calls on both of those.

djh, Thursday, 4 March 2021 22:23 (two years ago) link

two years pass...

Has there been much in an "amazing b-side" sort of way since ... whatever is the latest thing on that comp above?
