I say any bands who name-drop the Fall never seem to sound anything like them.

1. nearly every shoegaze group ever to claim mbv as an influence, with the sole exception of lovesliescrushing and early ride.

2. disco inferno, in the best way possible. ian crause talks up the young gods, public enemy, and techno in nearly every d.i. interview i've ever read, and obviously they sound nothing like any of them (though the influence, i suppose, is audible in other ways).

3. every new post-punk band EVER that mentions television, the velvet underground, joy division, or josef k. there are probably exceptions but i'm not in the mood to nitpick.

4. frank zappa and edgard varese.

I remember I interviewed the guitarist from Bush just before they broke big, and he kept namedropping the Pixies. That was a big head-scratcher. In fact, any band that namedrops the Pixies.

Beatles OTM, especiallt with regards to Oasis... There are a few minor melodic similarities, I guess, but one of the key things about the Beatles is they didn't just write the same fucking song over and over again.

I always figured that was an attempt at damage control, since everyone (including Dave Grohl) ended up dissing Bush as a Nirvana ripoff, "Well, Nirvana was influenced by the Pixies and so was I!"

Maybe the deal for some is they started off copying some band(s), then evolved into something a little more original, but always kept that original blueprint in the back of their minds while working towards their new sound.

Like the Beatles claiming all the early R&B (Buddy Holly comes to mind right away). What if the Beatles didn't get exposed to the masses until 1965? Would we hear the Crickets' influence?

Someone from Silverchair mentioned in an interview how much they liked Spiderland by Slint. That's hardly constant namedropping, nor a claim to influence, but suprised me nonetheless. It's also a lot of s's in one sentence.

Gavin Rossdale once interviewed Mark E. Smith (I think for Uncut) and claimed that The Fall was the ultimate genesis for Bush. Smith came off as a bit of a dick (in a shockah), but genuinely disarmed by the crazy stalker level of Rossdale Fall fandom.
