What bits don't you understand?

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

who is Little Nell?

too early for Little Mo alas

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the bit when Marsh sings 'Kym Mazelle' and then in the background singing is...Kym Mazelle!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i also don't know who the following people are:

brian hayes (altho it rings a bell)
little neepsie (is he just talking about a neep?)
chris and do
billy corkhill, vince hilaire (i've forgotten who vince hilaire is)
steve and claire (steve waddington and claire...jon's wife?)
mary wilson, di and flo
sir bufton tufton
andre previn (know the name but why?)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

If it's not merely the Dickens' character then I'd guess it's the Little Nell who was in the film of "Rocky Horror" (and maybe "Jubilee"?) She was an Australian... errrrr... actress I suppose? Nell Campbell. She was an Olympic swimmer then she came to London and hung out with Andrew Logan and Derek Jarman and Duggie Fields and those sorts of pre-punk London hipsters.

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Andre Previn = Mia Farrow's husband! Also famous musician and conductor
Mary, Di and Flo = THE SUPREMES!!!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Andre Previn has something to do with films.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:52 (fourteen years ago) link

brian hayes = broadcaster, presented the Channel 4 version of "Points of View". Then he presented the afternoon show on Radio 5 (until Simon Mayo came along)

billy corkhill = from Brookside, ya daft la'

vince hilaire = footballer, Crystal Palace I think? Winger.

mary wilson = either from the Supremes or Harold Wilson's wife(!)

sir bufton tufton = a Private Eye invention, a sort of bluff right-wing Tory MP from the shires

andre previn = you're joking here aren't you?

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I would guess Nell Campbell for Little Nell, too.

me = 1x well schooled

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:54 (fourteen years ago) link

billy corkhill = from Brookside, ya daft la'

i know jimmy corkhill. who was billy?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Little Nell/Nell Campbell also went on to run an achingly A-list nightclub in NYC called Nell's, which was at its zenith round about the time that "Hello" came out.

I always assumed that Brian Hayes referred to the radio presenter, now on BBC Five Live.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/presenters/media/hayes_pub1.jpg

Vince Hilaire was a footballer who played for Crystal Palace and Leeds amongst others.

Billy Corkhill was the Brookside character who married Sheila Grant.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Wasn't Brian Hayes better known at the time for hosting phone-in shows on LBC? Ah yes, so he was.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Brother of Jimmy Corkhill. The face may be familiar:

'Little Neepsie, Chris and do'

No idea about them, friends/acquaintances/ex band members perhaps?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

What about Paris Grey?

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Inner City vocalist

Paris Grey, Inner City vocalist on the peerless 'Good life' and 'Big Fun' amongst many others.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Not to be confused (as I just did) with Paris Brightledge, who sang on Sterling Void's "It's Alright"....

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

little nell =

Peter and Paul played keyboards on Bowie's "Subterraneans."

Vince Hilliare - once played for Portsmouth. These days he is a football pundit on Portsmouth's Quay 107.4 radio station.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 9 June 2006 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

it was confusing at the time as 'Do' (short for doreen) was billy corkhill's wife in BROOKSIDE so i always thought that maybe john marsh was talking about multiple characters. but "chris and do"..no there wasn't a chris.

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Kym Mazelle = disco diva ("Young Hearts Run Free"; also did songs with Soul II Soul & Blow Monkeys)

Mork & Mindy = Robin Williams sit-com from late-70's; spun off from "Happy Days)

Zippy = the cartoon pinhead (ably drawn by Bill Griffith)

hank (hank s), Friday, 9 June 2006 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

one year passes...

Zippy <> cartoon pinhead.

Zippy = weird puppet thing from UK kids' TV Show "Rainbow". Follows on immediately to Bungle (the bear) and Jeffrey (the human). Segue into Jeffrey Archer for comedy effect.

Bigger question: Does it matter?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 13:12 (twelve years ago) link

Yes.

David Cameron is currently attempting to bag the next General Election by doing his best to pretend that blue is not blue. If enough people are fooled the Child Catcher will slam the door shut and civilisation will go back to the thirteenth century, only quicker.

so who the feck are "little neepsie" and "chris & do"? how does nobody know, after all this time?

also, Wiki mentions Freddie Krueger - is he mentioned in a different version? I can't hear him on mine.

also also, i feel a POLL coming on...

little neepsie? anyone?

piscesx, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:12 (ten years ago) link

there's an article online, maybe on the beloved website where he explains all the references. some of them were friends.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:32 (ten years ago) link

"There's also props to friends of the band ("Little Neepsie, Chris, and Do"), and Marsh's bandmate Waddington and his girlfriend ("Steve and Claire") — the latter providing a suitable rhyme for the inclusion of Fred Astaire."

http://writatlarge.blogspot.com/2010/05/hear-again-happiness.html

I'm sure I read that in an article posted on the Beloved site but I can't find it now.

nice to see Kym Mazelle trending on Twitter and (apparently) on uk tv this very evening.

piscesx, Saturday, 6 April 2013 19:28 (seven years ago) link

not for her. went on 'the voice' and didn't get through. seems like a gamble that was barely worth taking.

Awesome! Sometimes I feel like I'm not just the only one that loves this record but also that loves "Conscience" and "X."

I love the Beloved, all the albums, and just about all of the 12" remixes too. Jon Marsh is a great guy on social media. Providing lots of fan support through answering questions and offering up rare mixes / etc.

their RSD release last year was very fondly received by me, if seemingly nobody else
