I Love Music Pub Meet

I think it would be a good idea if a lot of the contributors who post to I Love Music met up in a good pub and drank alcoholic things.

What do you think?

Tom, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sure, I'm in NYC and you're in, apparantly, UK. Meet ya halfway?

, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Aaaah...but where?

DG, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, that's the question. While obviously it'd be quite convenient to have it in Oxford from my p.o.v. I guess a large no. of UK posters are in London.

US posters.....well, it's a great holiday destination if you like the smell of burning cow.

Tom, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can do London, probably even Oxford, at certain times of the year. Like once every 1-2 months. However if you'd all like to come to Glasgow instead...

Ally C, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Naturally I'll nominate the Standard Bearer in Goodmayes, but anywhere in central London will do.

DG, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, if you plan this for August, I'm totally there.

And aren't we going to do this for the US in September, when you're over here, Tom?

Ally, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If you cant go to the pub, have the pub come to ye!

Simon, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Central/West/South London and I'm up for it. The Eel Pie in Twickenham is even better;).

Dr. C, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't think any more UK posters are in London than anywhere else, Tom. However, I can make London any time. Same pub as last summer, maybe?

(well I had a marvellous time that day, and I don't know London pubs that well, so I'm biased towards it!)

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

...or ye could all come over to Ireland, I mean its a halfway point between the US and the UK, so it seems only fair...;)

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Bay Area? Anyone?

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A staggered global 24-hour drinking session? At any given time some ILM contributor somewhere in the world will have a drink in their hands...?

I was thinking of doing it earlier than the Summer - get it organised quickly, see if it works, and then we can have more. "Community", yes?

Tom, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah, Robin? A quick count on the Intro thread reveals (of the declareds) 9 Londoners and 11 non-Londoners (me currently included) BUT I know of at least 4 more contributors who are from London and haven't answered that thread. So it looks like at least as many contributors come from London as not and compared to any single other place it wins. ;)

Tom, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

alfie's, on waller just off rideau, downtown ottawa.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I say Oxford too. It's a lovely place and less hectic than London. What about somewhere by the river? We can hurl abuse at people in punts. Plus, I can nip home and explain to my mother why there was a lack of mothering sunday gifts this year. 'Mother, I was off my face, please forgive me'.

lix, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sundar --> Ottawa would be okay for me as well, but the bill will be monstrous if we have to pay our distinguished British mates' plane fare...

Simon, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Punting! That is genius!

Right. UK ILM people! There are two plans. A pub meet in London soon and a punt meet in Oxford once the weather clears and the students go home.

Cheers, Tom

Tom, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh ah oops, it said shout abuse to people IN punts, not FROM punts.

Still I think my idea holds and you'll like the punt once you're in it. Especially if you're in it with a vast sack of drink.

Tom, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah Tom, you know I was trying to wind you up there :). The geographical spread of the UK population, plus certain demographic factors, would probably make such a result inevitable.

Yes, the London pub meet - by all means! Can we agree on a date, possibly mid-April?

Robin Carmody, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, and FWIW I also like the idea of the FT punt in Oxford. Even though it's partially because *even I* would have an excuse to indulge in class war rhetoric towards those others fucking about on the river :).

How's about having the punt meet in late May / early June?

Robin Carmody, Monday, 2 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeh, ok, i'm up for a london town meet

whens it going to be then?

gareth, Tuesday, 3 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think its a splendid idea, can we wear red carnations?

cw, Tuesday, 3 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i take it Edinburgh's out of the question, after Tom dissed the pubs on the www.?

alex thomson, Tuesday, 3 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Right - next question. Afternoon or evening? When? Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Weekday? I would suggest towards the end of April/start of May for the initial meet-up.

Tom, Wednesday, 4 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

well, has to be evening surely?

gareth, Wednesday, 4 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

But it has to be afternoon for some of us yokels to get home :).

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 4 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Aren't there any other contributors in the Boston area?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 4 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

boston? nah! then what would the 19 year olds do? though i'm secretly looking for an excuse to visit boston... mary chung's ... drool drool...

i don't know about any of you but tim hopkin's "dead cat" pub (he knows what i'm talking about) is pretty freaky sounding. us north londoners will attend if jumper critics are banned.

marianna maclean, Thursday, 5 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No way am I taking you lot to my best spots...

Tim, Thursday, 5 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mary Chung's is kind of awesome. Actually, it's scary the number of really good restaurants there are in this city. (Bob the Chef's, Addis Red Sea, Mary Chung, Pho Pasteur, Chau Chau City, La Famiglia, Pomodoro, The Elephant Walk, Sol Azteca, Border Cafe, Tanjore, Shalimar, Kashmir, Dali, Tapeo, etc, etc.) Of course, since my wife hates them, I don't know the bars that well. Most times when I go out (and it isn't to a restaurant), it's to Landsdowne St or The Alley. Or Club Cafe, oddly enough.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 5 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This is gonna be one fuck of a costly round !

Geordie Racer, Thursday, 5 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

hmm. well, if you're from around here too, simon, maybe a local mini-meet could be arranged. anyone else up for a night at alfie's?

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 5 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

two years pass...
were there only 24 users at the time of this thread?

cozenĀ” (Cozen), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago) link

There's something quite endearing about this thread. When you think about how much has resulted from it, it's quite spectacular.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago) link

The lack of location in the thread title is cute.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

this whole thread is cute.
