The rap bit in the middle of Curve's 'Ten Little Girls': C/D?

I liked it at the time but was expected to be embarassed by it when the song came up on the iPod the other day.
Surprisingly, it still sounds pretty good and works paradoxically well in the context of the song. OTOH I have a creeping feeling that it wouldn't sound of place on a late-90s nü-metal track...

Haven't heard it for years. Good point about how it has dated. I will check it out again. It was done by some fairly credible UK rapper at the time though wasn't it? JC 000, I think?

I haven't heard it in a while, but I can imagine it still sounding OK. I bought this 12" when it came out! I would have been about 14 I think.

Did JC 000 (or whoever, although that does seem familiar) have any other records out?

It's a lot better than Justin Warfield with Placebo.

Classic, because it's buried so deep in the already dense mix.

I always liked how Toni Halliday would actually do the rap part during live renditions.

The rap is a bit lame, I have to say. The rap itself is good, but the beat isn't really conducive to rapping. Why did they decide to include a rap in the first place?

Hoo dear you're not kidding.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, really. It just adds to the overall WTF-ness of the track.

Brutal, good Christ. Also spoils the finale of "Already Yours" with that ridiculous EMF "DON'T RUN AWAY!" baggy chanting bullshit. All I picture when I hear this is EMF and Jesus Jones' keyboardists jumping around like muppets. It was the great medieval question: CAN DANCE MUSIC ROCKYA!?

JC001 (for it was he) also made a should-be-cheesy-but-still-kinda-works appearance on The Beatmasters' single Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and had at least one solo single, called Neva Again (about TEH RACISM) c. 1993, which came in a rush of PR bumpf about him being officially recorded as the fastest rapper in the whole wide world. The cover showed him catching a bullet in his teeth and chips of enamel flying all over the place, which you'd think would affect his delivery somewhat.

I always liked how Toni Halliday would actually do the rap part during live renditions.

I'm listening to a boot of a 1998 show (must have been one of their last live shows) where Toni is doing this and it's completely ridiculous and awesome.

Man I totally forgot about this! I am so listening to Curve today.

Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Saturday, 28 August 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

shoegaze could have used a bit more rapping.

Sun Tea (Pillbox), Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I always feel vague guilt that my Curve rips all reside in a shoegaze genre folder, because they deserve the label less than any of those contemporaneous UK noise-pop bands.

less than Swervedriver, even?

Sun Tea (Pillbox), Saturday, 28 August 2010 16:00 (thirteen years ago) link

At the risk of sounding flippant, there are a lot GIS live photos showing Swervedriver staring at their pedals. Debbie Smith was a hyper whirvish who could have been spent a live show comfortably under a 4 foot truss, but its hard to say she was staring at anything...

As for specifics about his techniques and equipment, Garcia laughs, ”I’m giving away trade secrets here. It’s all quite grubby, actually. There’s an Eventide Ultra-Harmonizer, a couple of Akai 1100 samplers, a Morley Wah pedal, a bunch of delay units and Boss pedals, a Zoom box, some Flangers and EQs, and a DigiTech sweep thing that dips the pitch, which we use so the guitar doesn’t go out of tune. There’s a line of all of them, and then it goes into a Marshall.” As for the instruments themselves, Garcia plays his parts on an old Fender Jazzmaster guitar and a Music Man bass.

Can we have remasters of the debut and the Pubic Fruit comp, pleeeease?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:44 (eleven years ago) link

why remasters?

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

Pubic Fruit is alright save the Blindfold EP, which had pretty lo-fi production values. Doppelgänger suffers more from weaker songs (than the EPs) than from mastering, but I think a remaster there would help a lot.
