Just after 9/11 didn't Neil do a song that big-upped the bombing of Afghanistan and contained the lines:

"So let's roll for freedom / Let's roll for love / Going after Evil / on the wings of a dove"

Or was that my imagination?

Yes, well, he's nothing if not inconsistent.

from April 21, 2006 Los Angeles Times

By Chris Lee
Special to The Times

“I was waiting for someone to come along, some young singer 18 to 22 years old, to write these songs and stand up,” Young said. “I waited a long time. Then, I decided that maybe the generation that has to do this is still the ’60s generation. We’re still here.”

.... now I love Neil and all, but this seems like a frightfully stupid and myopic thing to say. "When the President Talks to God", that silly Beastie Boys song, any host of indie bands, even Kanye (kinda)... not saying all those efforts were good (or even listenable) but to say that no one outside of the 60s generation has written any suitably angry songs about the political state of the union is just stupid. Or maybe Neil doesn't actually listen to music anymore.

and which provincial indie phenom has made that dent in the culture?

Pearl Jam

There's NO WAY Neil would know about any of that stuff unless somebody played it for him. He only knew about Devo cuz Dean Stockwell took the risk of pissing him off to play it for him. He's been on record for well over a decade that he hates listening to recorded music, so he wouldn't be seeking this stuff out. Plus that Beastie Boys & Bright Eyes stuff wasn't on their albums, and he DID mention Chris Rock on his last album.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 22 April 2006 12:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Somebody should play him Desaparecidos though! I bet he'd like it.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 22 April 2006 12:22 (seventeen years ago) link

If you think it's myopic for a sextegenarian to not be aware of a download-only Bright Eyes single, well...

No way will this be as good as Pink's "Dear Mr President".

The 60s generation thinks it's all about them?! Since when?!?

"you've got a song called "Let's impeach the president". What is it about?"

"aren't you worried people will think you are UNPATRIOTIC?"

"perhaps you're using this as a way to sell more records"

"people will say [i.e. I say], you're a canadian, does this give you less of a platform to say these things"

fuck cnn

i like how the reporter looked panicked after the anchor rebuked her commercial-motivation theory

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 23 April 2006 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I say go for it Neil!

Ben Harper's definitely had some pretty good protest stuff too, if a tad more subtle than "Impeach the President", but take a listen to Black Rain and a few other tracks from Both Sides Of The Gun.

shorty (shorty), Sunday, 23 April 2006 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

flipping through Fox news today I saw them interviewing Billy Ray Cyrus. The only question I saw before I turned the channel:

"why do people love country musicians so much?"

I love the very half-hearted "Mm" at the very end

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 23 April 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

so how come they love them so much? huh?

The whole album is being streamed now:

I like it but I've always had a soft spot for when Neil rocks out and most of the disc is distortion-fueled anger.
