Joe Walsh - "Barnstorm"

My dad used to play this all the time, but I never paid attention to it back then. It's not really a total honky-rock fest, as one would assume; there's some sweet pop here.. and lots of interesting spacey production effects going on (esp. the first side). His voice may take getting used to.. I dunno, seems like a pretty prime example of Classic Classic Rock that remains unheard and out of print. Any other fans, eh?

I'm a big Joe fan. Get "You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind" and "The Smoker You Get..." Smoker has "Rocky Mountain Way" which you're probably sick of too, but there's some really good "unknown" stuff on there that I'm sure you'll like. Also, get some James Gang stuff. It's great classic rock.

Smoker also has Meadows which is one of the greatest songs ever.

It's been 20+ years since I've heard Barnstorm, but Turn to Stone (another greatest hits gem) is another of Joe's best writing. I just D/L'ed video torrents of Joe Walsh performances on the Midnight Special & OGWT, etc ...

walsh is cool. my friend tom was playing 'barnstorm' in the car on a lunch break the other day and about two songs in smacked the steering wheel and said 'man, this shit is so great I can even forgive this guy for joining the eagles'

Does "The Smoker You Drink the Player You Get" mean anything? About once a year I come across that album, try to figure it out for about three minutes -- is it a pun? a spoonerism? plain old non sequitur? -- and then move on to more constructive activities, i.e. anything else.

anyone ever hear the howard roberts record, or is any of the tumbleweed label stuff good?

Jesus, I was NINE SECONDS away from asking this myself! I've wondered about that for 20+ years now.

It's just drunk talk - like "I'm not as think as you stoned I am."

Are you insinuating that Joe Walsh has partaken of drugs or alcohol?!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Or that he knows someone who has?

adam (adam), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Hip O-Select has just reissued Barnstorm. Relatively cheap too.

Well worth checking out. Almost enough to forgive Joe for joining the Eagles.

But if you switch player and smoker, it still makes no sense

mizzell, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I always figured it was a very messed up attempt to deliver "the more you smoke/drink, the better you play".

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Like you have "the more you smoke, the better you play", and "the more you drink, the smarter I get", and you mash them together. Or something.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Not really on topic, but the full length "the Bomber" with the Bolero shit in the middle on James Gang "Rides Again" is fucking great

Bill Magill, Thursday, 28 August 2008 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Barnstorm is a good listen. Really you cannot go much wrong with all three of the James Gang records or Joe Walsh's first three solo albums.

This kind of has to be seen to be believed.

I can almost hear a big star #1 record quality here and there, maybe the acoustic g and vocal enunciation ?

“I’ll tell the world” is one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard.
