I like the 1st 2. My nomination would be Sophie Ellis-Featherstonehaugh.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, the best pop star in the UK is execrable.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I am exaggerating a bit... "pleasant MOR pop careers launched via vaguely underground dance crossover hits" was I think more what I was aiming at.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Someone remind me where Dina Carroll came from please... I'm sure she's one.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, she did that cover of carol king's 'it's too late' with quartz.

danny invincible (michael w.), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago) link

bryan adams, "let me take you dancin'"

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:20 (eighteen years ago) link

yazz

retrogurl, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago) link

did cold-cut launch lisa stansfield and yazz ?

retrogurl, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, without the hyphen

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 06:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Off-Topic: Speaking of Coldcut, did they ever get over being ashamed of their pop past? I lost count of their mid-90s Ninja Tune interviews that basically went "we're sorry, we made commercially succesful records for a multi-national, and we shan't do it again".

"People Hold On" and "The Only Way Is Up" haven't aged badly at all.

On-topic: DANIEL FUCKING BEDINGFIELD.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 06:57 (eighteen years ago) link

The pop records were for indies, it's the third Coldcut LP that put them off major labels and received ideas of commerciality.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Mark Hollis.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Shara Nelson.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 09:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Coldcut have been playing "People Hold On" out on their new tour so possibly not embarrased anymore.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 09:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Whatever did become of Yazz anyway?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 09:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Has anybody ever actually used the word "execrable"? I mean spoken it? Ever heard anybody use it? Has it ever been used ANYWHERE other than music reviews? How is it pronounced?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Dido

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Goldfrapp

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Words you have never heared spoken...

Myonga, that's uncanny (check the time. Unless you saw this before 10:40)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Ooh, "Mark Hollis" and the word "excreable" on the same subject/proposal. a first for ILM?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:49 (eighteen years ago) link

there's still a 'dance element' to goldfrapp tho.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:50 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean, they're kind of more danceable than tricky's 'pumpkin', no?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago) link

the thread title just says "list of execreable solo careers"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

You guys, your spelling is excremental.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:01 (eighteen years ago) link

okay: madonna

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Goldfrapp is not a solo act. Also, they rule!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:10 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway all of the people mentioned on this thread have released at least one decent single on their own.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I was thinking of acts who came to success via a "guest" spot on a single.

So no, Madonna really doesn't count.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Kelly Llorenna (sang on N-Trance's 'Set U Free', has since released a handful of bobbins tracks since)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

not really successful though so I guess she doesn't count

how about Martine McCutcheon? appeared on Uno Clio's 'Are You Man Enough' before having her own hits, which seem mostly poor except possibly 'On My Radio'.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Which Dido single is the decent one?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Hunter!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:28 (eighteen years ago) link

"White Flag"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

and David's 'What's Your Flava' is better than anything by Usher.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Including the Twix adverts?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:31 (eighteen years ago) link

not seen

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I was thinking of acts who came to success via a "guest" spot on a single.
So no, Madonna really doesn't count.

-- fandango (...), March 8th, 2006.

i'm guessing 're-rewind' was on crag's own LP though.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:37 (eighteen years ago) link

was it on before it was released by Artful Dodger featuring... though?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:50 (eighteen years ago) link

The version of "Re-rewind" that appears on Craig David's album is a remake. I'm guessing there was some issue as to ownership of the original.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I was thinking of acts who came to success via a "guest" spot on a single.

didn't madonna sing backup on patrick hernandez's "born to be alive"?

Shelly Winters Death Clip (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Beddingfield, n. - A pleasant MOR pop career launched via a vaguely underground dance crossover hit.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Sub Sub featuring Melanie Williams - the only example of a rockist career launched via a dance hit?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Doves were hardly launched via "Ain't no love Ain't no use" and a ten year gap though?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:11 (eighteen years ago) link

more liek five-six years.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

most of the people listed on this thread are at least semi-good if not really good!

craig david, sophie e-b, dina carroll, shara nelson: am very glad for all their solo careers to have existed. especially dina carroll!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 13:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Shara Nelson's 'One Goodbye In Ten' is brillo

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:09 (eighteen years ago) link
