Actually, I'm really tempted since it's my birthday weekend.

Go go go! The new site is "amazing" according to the press officer and considering how gorgeous the previous one was I'm rather excited.
Jansch and Renbourne - wowzers!

Yeah, the site is a big incentive for me. Sitting in a huge country park for a weekend will be great regardless of the music on offer!

I'll wait till after Banhart's ATP day to see how easily convinced my camping-phobic other half might be.

I went last year and the year before. Last year the atmosphere was less relaxed, security was unpleasant, and it seemed like it was starting to get a bit scenestery. Also, a BBC interview in which Jo and Danny were a bit self-congratulatory and sneered at the Cambridge Folk Festival really got my goat. I won't be going this year.

In its defence, if you've never been, it's probably orders of magnitude more fun (and less squalid) than Glastonbury and Reading.

The Big Chill lineup (Nizlopi aside) is SO much more interesting than Green Man so far. Man.

in other news V festival a sell out due to Mozza and Radiohead ..and the no Glasto factor.

Nice to see that Wizz Jones's fortunes are picking up a bit.

I went for the first time last year and it was wonderful, the best festival I've been to. Everyone was laid back and having a grand old time. Security were fine and compared to a big festival incredibly laid back. Nobody stopped us taking booze into the arena or having bonfires in the campsite. The only problem people had with security was about access to the house at certain times, but that was obviously something the estate owners enforced and something you just accepted.
The scenester thing is unavoidable. As the festival grows you'll get people who go there to be seen. So what? Ignore them and get on with the fun. Anyway, nu-folk scenesters are hardly as bad as the types you get at ATP.

Big Chill lineup better? Well, it's quite varied, but there's still a lot of dull downtempo nonsense that's about as much fun to watch as paint dripping. And I doubt the surroundings will be as much fun.

two years pass...

Anyone going this year? The bill's been finalised. I'm looking forward to Black Mountain, Fuck Buttons, SFA, Richard Thompson, Junior Boys, Howlin' Rain, Caribou, and drinking real ale in the sunshine.

Right I'm getting ready for the off- any other ILXORs going?

Neil S, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Me, tho not until tomorrow. It's going to piss with rain most of the weekend it would seem. I have a lot of time for this festival but I really fear that three washouts in a row is going to be a bridge too far for people when it comes to thinking about going next year

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I've been the last couple of years and the thought of it raining all wknd is not a good one. Still, Dunkirk spirit and all that.

so who's going this year? last year's rain was hard to get through, but i'm back again with my two children. the addition of animal collective and roky erikson for friday night will certainly set the tone....

lol @ me two posts up being smooth wrong - this has sold a ton of tickets this year before they even announced the lineup. I thought it was weak as hell to start but I'd love to see Dirty Three - they also have Idjut Boys and some other dudes doing a beardo night I think

dog latin, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 11:02 (fourteen years ago) link

This is by far and away the worst festival I've ever been to. Grown fucking adults dressed like clowns. Men with vapid slogans written on their foreheads. Fractal light shows. Four Tet Guardian Space reader rave. People on fucking stilts. Jugglers. Tie dyed leggings. Weekend fucking Wiccans listening to middle class folk singers putting on 'authentic' regional working class accents to sing songs about the plight of Cornish tin miners. Utter cunts.

I spent two thirds of the weekend in my hotel room doing cocaine, watching all of Battlestar Galactica and listening to drum and bass. A far more worthwhile use of time...

Except... I know it's alright probably - quite harmless and fun even - and everyone loves this festival and so should I really but I'm too uptight to.

I'd sooner go to a gathering of the jugalos.

President Keyes, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 11:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Man. If it was actually like that, I'd still be there.

But it was loads of estate agents wearing kaftans over their pink Hackett polo shirts with quasi-racist afro wigs on. Braying hoo-haws smoking spliff and listening to Bob Marley in their tents before heading over to the main arena to have their minds blown by Noah and the Whale and Emmy the Great.

Doran, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:04 (fourteen years ago) link

But, y'know, each to their own etc.

Doran, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I have fun at this thing on the reg but tbqf that is hugely influenced by the fact that it is full to the brim with my friends (who are hugely inflluenced by etc) - if it wasn't an hour and a bit's drive up the road I doubt I would have ever attended

Dirty Three owned everything last year, that said

Kind of amazing that Doran slags off the entire festival for being twats then boasts about going back to his hotel to participate in a of drugs use utterly guaranteed to turn anyone into a twat themselves. A bit pot, kettle, you're looking black today to be honest.

Dunno if Battlestar Galactica is classified as a drug but fair point nonetheless Kate

sometimes I feel like throwing my glands up in the air (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link

There are too many prepositions in my sentance due to incomplete editing but you get the point.

There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:25 (fourteen years ago) link

There was, perhaps, a flicker of self-recognition in that post Kate. It's kind of acknowledged. If you look hard enough for it.

"Utterly guaranteed". Ha! What bunkum.

When people say "coke turns people into arseholes"; what they generally mean is "my friends are arseholes on coke".

If coke generally did to people what Stella Artois does to people they'd be justified in going on about it. But then it doesn't does it.

For example: I don't usually take it at all but when I do, I'll be on my own listening to music. What conclusions can you draw from what I'm like on it? None, I'd wager.

Doran, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:42 (fourteen years ago) link

If an asshole does coke alone in his room and no one is around to hear it...

pithfork (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:54 (fourteen years ago) link

So who's good? Who should I add to my list of people to see, and then not see because I have to take a child back to the tent?

Definitely gonna be disappointed to miss Caribou, Richard Dawson, Nadine Shah, Thundercat, and Michael Kiwanuka, but who else should I get hyped about seeing only to be bitterly disappointed?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:03 (four years ago) link

I've been three times (06, 08 and, I think 14) and it's easily the best biggish festival I've been to. Spending lots of time in the kids' field in 2014 was magical and probably my favourite festival experience.

Not massively enthused by that lineup, tbh. I would happily miss most of them dealing with stroppy kids! (I missed Low in 2014, I have never forgiven my boy :) )

Ngolo Cantwell (Chinaski), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:07 (four years ago) link

We enjoyed it so much last year that we bought early bird tickets before any lineup announcement. So a bit of roulette, but I love Caribou to pieces.
