Personally, I really, really love his "Metal Horse"/"Portrait Of The Artist as A Fountain" single; he also has an album out in a day or two. I'm not too sure about his remixes, though.

He was good on the Rhodri Marsden radio show recently.

I like his remixes, specially the "Eavesdropping" one. Nearly everything I've heard from him has been consistently great -check "Blut Es Im Schoe" from that Kash Point compilation. Looking forward for the album.

i second that, his eavesdropping remix of grizzly bear is really great. so is metal horse

Picked up the Max Tundra remix of "Terry Riley Disco" off a blog recently, which is worth a gander.

hector savage, Monday, 27 February 2006 02:17 (eighteen years ago) link

no, dud, plus he thinks he's momus

powpowpow, Monday, 27 February 2006 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

A really talented dude. His music and remixes definitely have tons of grandeur. I'm dying to hear the album too!

Jean Tully de Molinaire (Jean Tully de Molinaire), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Strangely, he reminds me of Momus too (songs about piss art, etc), only he does the music I wish Momus was doing...

one year passes...

just got a recommendation for this

"Synchrotron" from the upcoming third album is rocking my shit right now. Reminds me of the Chap's last album, in tone anyway, only with better lyrics.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 02:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i've only heard the 45 mentioned in the opening post but it's great. can see the momus comparison, but SB is quite a bit better than anything he's done in years

King Boy Patinka (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 02:19 (fifteen years ago) link

He made a record three years ago called "Trainwreck/Raincheck". It's release last year was a non-event, the guy running his label vanished to Ireland in a puff of ethyl acetate. It's a classic. Spoken word over in-the-box electronic music. Sounds better than it sounds. "Big Science" with a sense of humour.

And the new record is very fine indeed.

Owen Pallett, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link

He's still got copies of Trainwreck/Raincheck available to order on his website, too: http://www.simonbookish.com/discs.php .

The two songs I've heard from the new album ("Synchrotron" and "Dumb Terminal," which is up on his myspace) sound fantastic. Like kind of a sciencey Divine Comedy.

Just got this the other day and will be interested to give it an ear -- when things calm down a bit.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Hang on, WTF? how does he have artwork of mine that *I* don't even have any more, on his MySpace?

Sweaty and Cowbelled (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

SCIENCE.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 20:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, this album's great. I like the confidence it exudes throughout, it's an insular album that doesn't sound withdrawn, if that makes any sense.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 20:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Well I guess the record release party is at this Pure Groove place in Clerkenwell on Tuesday. (They keep having great shows there that I can never be arsed to go to for some reason.) It's free, I think I'll go.

three weeks pass...

This came out last week in the U.S. but hasn't gotten much attention yet. The only reviews I've found:

one month passes...

I've been meaning to listen to this for forever. Now that I can't sleep, I've had a good opportunity. I say it is ... burt_stanton approved.

burt_stanton, Sunday, 14 December 2008 07:14 (fifteen years ago) link

philip glass meets momus and patrick wolf meets PBS aesthetic (I don't know what you fruity Brits have). If that doesn't excite you, then I feel sorry for you.

three years pass...

I'm surprised we haven't gotten more discussion on Everything/Everything going; this is exactly the kind of record I think ILM would dig; kinda like Max Tundra meets XTC meets nu-Sufjan, it's really good guys

frogbs, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, yes it is.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

eight years pass...

you know it's amazing this guy had a critically acclaimed breakout pop album 11 years ago and then never did anything remotely like it again

frogbs, Monday, 4 January 2021 05:33 (three years ago) link

Yeah, seriously. I keep hoping he'll put out something else along those lines, but it sure doesn't seem like he has any interest in doing that. New album next year is supposedly going to be a spoken-word/chamber thing.

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Monday, 4 January 2021 14:38 (three years ago) link

next year this year
