These don't look quite as essential as the Cure/Siouxsie reissues in terms of extra musical stuff (if only because all the bonuses had already come out on the various single sets). The sound improvement might be worth it, though, and I'll be interested in the DVD documentaries for each.

No Black Celebration, no credibilty

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 24 February 2006 22:24 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Surely they'll get to that, yes?

They will. This is just the starting batch.

Oh OK

will they be available as single sacd/cd releases w/out the dvd version?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 February 2006 23:06 (eleven years ago) Permalink

But why only three CDs, taken from various stages of their career?

And why not "Construction Time Again" and "Black Celebration" - their best albums?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 25 February 2006 00:55 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Because you haven't read my further post indicating that the rest will eventually be rereleased as well.

Any official word on whether these are hybrid SACDs like the Can reissues? I would hope so given the tiny percentage of people who actually own SACD players...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 March 2006 15:22 (eleven years ago) Permalink

This is kinda interesting:

The albums of Depeche Mode will be reissued over the next year. Not only will the albums be fully remastered, but they will also contain 5.1 surround mixes, along with other bonuses. The first batch of CD's will be "Speak & Spell" (with Daniel Miller as the executive producer), "Music For The Masses" (with Dave Bascombe, Alan Wilder and Daniel Miller as executive producers) and "Violator" (with Flood, Alan Wilder and Daniel Miller as executive producers).

I'm not too sure what this means, but are they implying that Alan's come back to do a bit of remixing himself on all this, maybe?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 March 2006 15:24 (eleven years ago) Permalink

This isn't unusual is it? I mean, people getting together with their past band to do remaster jobs.

Alan, like Vince, has of course spoken to the people behind the documentaries too.
(Btw. Just got "Speak & Spell" today. A big record store chain here just ordered the two other titles as special editions, so I had to order "Speak & Spell" on import)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 April 2006 14:22 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Not that it matters, but I recently got "Construction Time Again" and "black Celebration" on vinyl for $1.50 total -- in excellent shape as well.

Also, I've never heard a 5.1 mix of anything outside of the movie theater... would such a thing devistate me (positively) listening to DM or would I be all "that's nice" and shit?

Still these excite me.

nick ring (nick ring), Saturday, 29 April 2006 03:16 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Am I right in guessing that these reissues are going to be copy-protected?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 29 April 2006 03:35 (eleven years ago) Permalink

No way for me to hear the 5:1 mixes by now, but I still go for the special versions because of the documentaries.

And, yes, they are all copy-protected. Luckily doesn't matter for me with any of the players I use (and if I need a copy of one of the songs for a compilation, there is always Audiograbber to take care of that anyway)

So, what happens? When will those remasters of "A Broken Frame", "Construction Time Again" and "Some Great Reward" hit the shops? They should have been released on 13. April according to the original release scheme.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 00:32 (eleven years ago) Permalink

And they're finally out in the States, that took long enough. (I was talking with a friend of mine who is in a position to know and apparently there was some sort of legal clearance problem for America that Mute had [inadvertantly?] dumped in Rhino's lap, though maybe I'm misremembering what he told me.) Only was able to grab Violator today -- what's great is that since my 33 1/3 idea for the album didn't go through, in its own small way the documentary on the DVD covered a lot of what I wanted to talk about perfectly, right down to starting with lots of stuff about the Wherehouse riot! Amazing news clips, and nice to see the various tour films done for many of the songs, though only in extended snippets rather than in whole.

And of course the album sounds freakin' brilliant. Again. As always.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 01:12 (eleven years ago) Permalink

(And I also gotta say the B-sides sound great with DVD sound. "Kaleid" is currently tearing my head off.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 02:07 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Sounds like Rhino did their homework with the video content- are the Rhino versions copy-protected like the UK releases?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 02:33 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Sounds like Rhino did their homework with the video content-

The documentary itself is a Depeche/Mute deal, so the credit to them!

are the Rhino versions copy-protected like the UK releases?

That I don't know, not having tried to rip it yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 02:48 (eleven years ago) Permalink

are these dualdiscs?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 02:50 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Nope -- two disc reissues, CD with the original album remastered, then DVD with 5.1 and stereo sound, plus the documentary and B-sides.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 03:16 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Still no word about the next batch?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 07:54 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I don't understand why the B-sides don't appear as CD tracks (is it not possible to have mixed content on a DVD, ie. some stuff playable on dvd player and some on normal cd player)?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:09 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Woah! There's like... clips of the LA riot on that dvd?

That's it i'm buying it.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:39 (eleven years ago) Permalink

The B-sides should have been on the first CD as bonus tracks.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 10:13 (eleven years ago) Permalink

is it not possible to have mixed content on a DVD, ie. some stuff playable on dvd player and some on normal cd player)?

Nope, DVD lasers are a lot more precise than a CD player since there's so much more data crammed on there. DualDisc is pretty much a cop-out in that department since it actually has two metallic media encased in plastic.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 12:45 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Wow, glad I read this thread so I don't bother dropping the cash down for these. Twenty bucks a pop to not get the B-sides on a CD? No thanks.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:49 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I should note, folks, that ALL the B-sides have long been available on CD on the remastered CD singles box sets.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:55 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I don't get the DVDs...are they DVD-As, or are they standard DVDs? because my dvd player can't deal with dvd-a.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:36 (eleven years ago) Permalink

So one can only listen to the B-sides using a DVD player? Looks like I'll have to get the remastered albums and the singles box sets. Damnit! That should take a good five years or more.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:49 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I have to agree that the whole B-sides being DVD only has really made me question getting the reissues. Fucking lame.

And I was excited to get the reissues too. Then again, it's not as if the originals sounded bad.

((((((DOPplur)))n)))u))))tttt (donut), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 16:00 (eleven years ago) Permalink

The documentaries are great. The only reason for me to buy the DVD yet, and yet it was enough for me to do. Hopefully I will have the option to listen to the 5:1 mixes before or since too.

According to the DM website, the next batch of remasters comes out on October 2nd, and consists of A Broken Frame, Some Great Reward (yes!) and Songs of Faith and Devotion (no!). Why must they hold back Black Celebration?! WHY OH GOD

Anyway, Black Celebration is coming out sometime next year, along with Construction Time Again, Ultra and Exciter.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 06:01 (eleven years ago) Permalink

They should have stayed with the original schedule and released "Construction Time Again" rather than "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" with the first batch.

(Still wondering what is the point with a remastered "Exciter" btw)

OK, so I finally got at least two of those (going to buy "Songs..." too, but it will have to wait), and first and foremost I am struck by the obvious improvement in sound quality from the originals of "A Broken Frame" and "Some Great Reward". The documentaries are always worth watching, and I also love how they have included some live material from back then.

Hopefully they will not wait too long before they release the last batch, including three of their best ever albums.

alright, so, these didn't come out as SACDs in the US, correct? so what is the point of them again? do any of them actually sound any better? the amazon reviews of violator reissue are scathing about it's pointlessness.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 28 October 2006 04:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

Ned, can you tell me a little more about where to find the b-sides on CD? Are you talking about the CD single box sets in the black boxes with the 1-2-3-4-5-6 order? (There are six of them, right?) Anything else I should know when seeking these out in the used market?

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Saturday, 28 October 2006 15:01 (ten years ago) Permalink

The ones from the 80s sound remarkably better. Particularly "Speak And Spell" has gained a lot from the remastering.

I am a bit more in doubt about "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" though (yes I bought it now - the documentary is sure interesting), and I certainly cannot see the point in the "Exciter" remaster due next year, apart from the special edition with the DVD documentary.

And, no, this is not about the singles box sets although they are the ones you need if you want the b-sides in a format that doesn´t only play on DVD.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 28 October 2006 18:24 (ten years ago) Permalink

And, no, this is not about the singles box sets although they are the ones you need if you want the b-sides in a format that doesn´t only play on DVD.

Yeah, I am familiar with the reissues that are coming out at the moment. I'm more interested in the singles box sets, though, and I just thought I'd get the info here if possible.

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Saturday, 28 October 2006 20:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

Stephen, go to Amazon and look up the singles box info there. It's every single from "Dreaming Of Me" to "Dream On" inclusive.. almost all of the remixes and B-sides included.

The rarer remixes were then collected on the Remixes 81-94 3-CD set from 2004, and some recent Enjoy The Silence mixes mostly on that US CD-single minus one mix on an non-US single that apparently isn't super essential.

sorry 81-04

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Saturday, 28 October 2006 20:42 (ten years ago) Permalink

The singles box sets are simply complete collections of their singles, with all the mixes and extra tracks that used to be on the singles - or 80s 12" singles. Well worth owning considering they have quite a well of great non-album b-sides and great 12" mixes behind them. I would say particularly the first 4 boxes are essential.

Note that there is some overlap between the singles box sets and the rather recent remix compilation. If you are a completist you will need both though, as there was a lot on the remix compilation not on the 12" singles and vice versa.

so today i got given a promo of depeche mode: the best of. the packaging is so spectacularly shit that i thought, for a moment, it was some kind of bootleg joke.

but apparently no: it's "their first-ever best-of collection" (hmm: still all singles, though, which makes it, what, their fourth singles collection?) and has a NEW TRACK, called "martyr", that i'm about to listen to in the next couple of seconds.

tracklisting etc is in the link above. i know it's not a reissue as such but this seemed the best thread for it.

"martyr" is oddly jaunty, seems to have a bassline borrowed off soft cell, and can't make up its mind whether to glitch, grind or bleep. it's no "precious", put it that way.

mrs fiendish has just hoyed in and said: "it sounds like every other depeche mode song ever" but she's completely and utterly wrong there.

--

In sum part of me is still disappointed in this reissue series compared to the Cure one -- relatively few actual new or rare tracks featured for a start. Still, the mega-documentary that the DVDs have created is enjoyable, and it's nice to have these in a final definitive CD version before that format starts to slip away. I am kinda glad, though, that I've never had to pay for any of the reissues so far, relying instead on Amoeba credit for used copies...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 07:50 (ten years ago) Permalink

I haven't purchased these yet (even though I sold back my old cd copies in preparation for doing that) simply because they haven't been enticing enough. I'm a bit of an uneducated sound quality junkie and I felt like I couldn't hear some of the old versions (particularly the 80s ones up to Violator) the way I though I should be hearing them. I do still need to get these.

On to the other piece you slippedd in there about, "it's nice to have these in a final definitive CD version before that format starts to slip away," I think you just started a whole new thread there. There probably already is a thread or one million pieces of a thread spread across other threads, but do you think the record industry is heading towards abandoning the cd format? All downloads? No physical form for releases (cause you know majors aren't going to revert to vinyl)? And why did I read that the music industry actually had total higher sales last year that 2005 but since a much higher percent was from paid downloads, "they" still weren't happy because downloads aren't as profitable as physical album sales (or somesuch)? How could that be possible? Where are we headed Ned?

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 19 January 2007 13:07 (ten years ago) Permalink

I think I accidentally started such a thread the other day!

The Data Migration Thread

So that might be where to turn for further discussion. Where we're headed? Honestly, no idea -- the way I see it, reissues like these are kinda the deluxe 'here's as good as it gets' variant on CDs as such. Depeche wisely are hedging their bets via the complete back catalog on iTunes, just to get that out of the way. And while I was snarking on this in its separate thread, there is actually a chunk of stuff on there which is as yet ungathered in physical form which I do want, so I'll post that here:

Now personally I'll wait on singles sets 7 and 8 in actual form -- no matter what I do with my CD collection over the years, some stuff I'll keep the way it is and Depeche will be one of those acts. But the rest of this I'll snag as I can if, as I presume, they're not going to release it in any other format any time soon.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:30 (ten years ago) Permalink

Yeah, that I have on the actual "Dream On" single, IIRC. (I love the singles box sets because they don't fuck around with that CD 1/CD 2/vinyl splitting of tracks; they just put everything on there properly!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

Sorry, not "Dream On," duh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:33 (ten years ago) Permalink

I have loved the documentaries. I don't think there are a lot of new tracks to provide (other than rare live tracks, which is pointless because the songs are already known - unless there is unreleased studio material, then let it be.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

However, they should have included the bonus tracks on the CDs too, not just the DVDs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

I tried writing about the iTunes boxset in the sandbox, and everyone poo-poo'ed it! I'm a little hurt!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:24 (ten years ago) Permalink

I was cruel.

Actually there is some word about that -- apparently you're only supposed to be able to buy the whole set and not individual songs or sets, which is annoying. (Even more annoying is that this is Mute's policy, not Apple's.) This is however apparently still being talked about behind the scenes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:33 (ten years ago) Permalink

You can buy most of the tracks individually, but not the sets. Regardless, I am currently saving up for this thing. I want it now. Tomorrow won't do...

So I got the Construction Time Again and Black Celebration reissues on Saturday. Who is happy? I AM. Then again I am currently listening to "It Doesn't Matter" from Some Great Reward -- how had I missed those concluding vocal parts before?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 April 2007 20:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

It seems they haven't been able to import them here yet. They were supposed to have been released by the middle of last week, but no signs of them anywhere in Norwegian shops for now.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 2 April 2007 21:44 (ten years ago) Permalink

i just got the 'construction time again' vinyl reissue. delighted to have a new. fresh, scratch free copy.

stirmonster, Monday, 2 April 2007 22:04 (ten years ago) Permalink

Well, ordered it from an online shop now and hopefully they will send it to me before a Norwegian store manages to get it in its shelves. I need those two remasters/DVD's now. Heck, it's the two best albums they ever released, Goddammit!!!

Ultra and Exciter finally out and got 'em the other day. And with that final step, I was able to do something which I had hoped would be the case -- get all the reissues for free thanks to dumping promo discs at Amoeba. A more than fair exchange.

STILL WORKING MY WAY THROUGH THE DIGITAL BOX SET!!!

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:41 (nine years ago) Permalink

Nothing wrong with that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:44 (nine years ago) Permalink

Oh, doubtless. It's just a LOT of music to chew through.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:01 (nine years ago) Permalink

I have yet to invest in "Exciter". Completely pointless as a remaster (after all, what exactly is there to be done with a 2002 recording?), but I guess I will buy it for the documentary and the new surround mixes.

these dvds that come with the reissues are just fantastic aren't they? the early days studio stuff is adorable! i like how they give Daniel Miller and the other key label/production/tour crew bigwigs their due as opposed to the usual round of celebs banging on about what the record means to them and suchlike. some day all reissues would be made this way. a minor gripe is the lack of demos and stuff like you get with The Cure but you can't have everything.

tbh it was worth it just to get "Happiest Girl (The Pulsating Orbital Vocal Mix)" on CD (the version on "World In My Eyes" was an instrumental)

slowly but surely i am getting the basic single cd remastered editions.
today i found remastered edition of 'violater' for a coin in a charity shop.
not so sure i need 'ultra' to be replaced as i think the original sounds perfectly fine, but should the chance arise then of course i will succumb.
the only other remastered edition i really need of the cds i already have is 'black celebration', however, the edition i have has extra tracks on it (breathing in fumes, but not tonight(ext), black day).
such a shame they did not add extras to the remasters.
that said, i kind of like the fact they stuck to the original albums.
i mean my first exposure to MFTM was on cassette, which had a ton of extras, and what i would give to have that edition available on remastered cd now.

mark e, Thursday, 7 September 2017 21:05 (two weeks ago) Permalink

black celebration dvd is a thing of beauty and a joy forever; the docu is *an hour* long and features among other treats; The Cure and the the Mode hiding in a van during a riot.

piscesx, Thursday, 7 September 2017 22:34 (two weeks ago) Permalink

ultra came out during a period when CDs sounded pretty good, i think. pre-loudness wars, post-"oops got rid of the hi hat". like those great sounding byrds reissues that came around 97/98, i kind of remember those being the first 60s rock reissues that sounded really great and were inexpensive + easy to get. maybe i'm wrong/too young, tho

brimstead, Friday, 8 September 2017 00:26 (two weeks ago) Permalink

The original CD issue of Music for the Masses had bonus tracks too, if I recall ('Agent Orange', 'To Have and To Hold (Spanish Taster)', 'Never Let Me Down (Aggro Mix)', a remix of 'Pleasure, Little Treasure' etc.) - I think it was a bit of a ploy by Mute to get people to buy the CD version... same with Erasure's The Innocents which had a couple of bonus tracks on both the cassette and CD versions ('When I Needed You (Melancholy Mix)' and their version of 'River Deep, Mountain High') ...

yeah otm. I mean, I figure it's partially based on what age I was at the time (imagine it sounds dated to a lot of people younger than me), but I love a lot of the way late 90's stuff was produced, before all the squashing. really crisp and clear. Ultra is one of the best-produced albums ever imo
