they are so underrated...
matthew smith could be a successful rock musician if we were in the 60's now.but were not.
oh,
and "out there in the dark" is a masterpiece.
what do you think?

me i just say, Saturday, 18 February 2006 06:31 (eighteen years ago) link

FUCKING CLASSIC i've been meaning to start this thread for the longest time.

matthew smith is a legend. probably my favourite current songwriter by a screaming mile.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Saturday, 18 February 2006 06:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I love these guys. Our Love Will Save The World was one of my five favorite albums of 2005.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:11 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah it's fantastic. personally i think supernatural equinoxe had some higher moments but was maybe a bit less consistent overall. i love pretty much all their records though

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:14 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone saw them live?
is it good?

deeeeejjjjj, Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never bought any of their albums, but they're amazing live. I always mean to pick some up, but I never know where to start.

js (honestengine), Saturday, 18 February 2006 19:12 (eighteen years ago) link

defenetly "out there in the dark" is theie best.

start with, Saturday, 18 February 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago) link

come on guys, praise the outrageous name!
don't let them down like they were just another thread..

flux, Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i used to see them live all the time in the 90s when i was in detroit, they were usually pretty great though never as theatrical as their time stereo friends. the records were always a bit ok. i never wanted to listen to any of them more than once but i think i stopped buying them around the time of the one with the x-rays in the cloud mine song on it. matthew smith is great though, volebeats, monster island, etc...

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 19 February 2006 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I agree with 'Out There in The Dark' as their best. I like Smith's somgwriting in Volebeats just as much, if not more, as OC.

TRG (TRG), Sunday, 19 February 2006 17:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I rilly like Our Love and the pre-alb EP "Why Don't We Talk About Something Else", which is almost better. Also, Smith's production on the Denise James is Heavenly.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

totally agree. also the first slumber party album too

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:10 (eighteen years ago) link

hmmm looks like i should check these guys out

strongo hunkington, Monday, 20 February 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

CLASSIC, even in their one-trick-pony-ness.

don weiner (don weiner), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Strongo: At least see 'em live. They're worth it.

seven months pass...
new album Stay Happy has been out for a week or two - i was unaware! has anyone heard it yet??

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:26 (seventeen years ago) link

gotta love a band that puts out an album on a yearly basis

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

the production is a bit more garage-thinner and basic than "our love will" was . other than that it's the same (good) stuff as always.

emekars (emekars), Thursday, 19 October 2006 01:28 (seventeen years ago) link

actually, if you take 4-5 songs out of "stay happy" it will make a fantastic EP.
matthew smith still got the power.

check out the double album that was released after "out there", it's up there with it as outrageous' masterpiece
(forgot the name of that record)

Zeno, Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago) link

that's the book of spectral projections

that's never been my favourite one though it does have a few great tracks on

it's dead easy to find their stuff cheap secondhand. always worth taking a chance on picking one of their discs up

deb agoli still their drummer?

henry s, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 02:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Deb agoli left the band in 2001. Carey Gustafson drummed for them 2002-2006. In 2007 Samantha Linn started drumming and doing background vocals. She also fronts a band in Detroit called "The Arch Mystics" (they have a MySpace page). I agree with everyone on this page that OC is a fantastic band amd Matt Smith is a songwriting genius. I've posted a video (with their permission) on my YouTube channel-- http://www.youtube.com/lodvid -- of "Anymore", which is my favorite from their new album. You can also find some demos of songs that Samantha is working on there. I can't get enough of OC!

Bad, Bad Memories of a Good Time (electricsound), Sunday, 29 March 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i wish they would make another psych-dark sounding garage album, like out there/spectral projecion are.
cause although i still love the new Outrgeous lp with all my heart, they do tend to get kinda repetetive on their last albums.

Zeno, Sunday, 29 March 2009 23:57 (fifteen years ago) link

agree. the songs are good enough to carry them but could be so much better served

maybe they need to bring back deb!!

yeah, Newman is a big fan.
he already coverd (as a solo) If You Want Me.

this time it's Georgie Don't You Know,Togetherness and Electric Child of Witchcraft Rising.

Zeno, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:35 (fourteen years ago) link

There's an instrumental, "Panavision 70," that I love; I think I saved two other songs of theirs too.

clemenza, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Classic definitely. Haven't heard the more recent release, but I intend to fix that problem very soon.

ImprovSpirit, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Wasn't home when I wrote the previous post...The other two I have on my hard-drive are the first two on Stereo Action Rent Party: a good cover of "Sign of the Times" and "Days."

clemenza, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I feel like I'm not alone when I say that I don't like a single other band that sounds like Outrageous Cherry but I fucking love Outrageous Cherry. I don't know if it's that they just are so good at that sound that anything else seems redundant to me, or they're that good that I like them despite not being into that kind of music. Oh, who cares.

filthy dylan, Thursday, 22 April 2010 01:08 (fourteen years ago) link

they just are so good at that sound that anything else seems redundant to me, makes sense to me, though i love the style

fag-amplitude (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

...also Matthew Smith has one of the best vocals in rock music and he is an awesome songwriter.

Between this band and the Volebeats, Matthew Smith is one of the best songwriters around. SO good.

Zeno, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 15:39 (thirteen years ago) link

emusic sorted me out. one listenthrough has it as a vastly more laidback record than the previous one, in many ways their least psychedelic.. but it's definitely a grower, second listen has the songs already feeling like old friends

The new one is great. They seemingly have an endless supply of hooks. I can't understand why they're so obscure.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm surprised more folks aren't into their older stuff too. My favorite is probably Nothing's Gonna Chear You Up, which I hope to put out on vinyl soon. We just put their debut out on vinyl... it only took 16 years. Here's a link if anyone's curious. http://www.microficherecords.com/MFR-001.php

i like the debut but it is easily the weakest of everything they've done. having said that, 'pale frail lovely one' is easily in my OC top 10
