On the opposite of Uncoverable Songs, what songs would you dream to hear covered, and by whom?

Simon, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Neither of these will ever happen (largely due to band splits and death, respectively), but I'd love to hear "Money Is Not Our God" by Killing Joke covered by since-broken-up Cop Shoot Cop, and I'd love to hear the MC5 (in a rare, post-death appearance) play "Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd like to hear Autechre cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Boards of Canada covering a Dylan song. Godspeed You Black Emperor! doing Weezer. I'd like to see how any two groups coming from opposite ends of the musical spectrum might interpret each other's material. Maybe it'd turn out horribly, but at least it'd be an interesting mess. The Fall covering Outkast.

I want to hear Britney Spears do Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown". But only if she means it. It's a pretty safe bet that she wouldn't Whitneyhoustonize it.

Patrick, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't think of anything better than Britney doing the "Joy of Pepsi" jingle.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd like to hear "livin' on a prayer" covered by the Olivia Tremor Control.

jel, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

For amusing incongruity, I'd rather like hearing The Fall covering "The Water-Shrew Shuffle" by Scarlet's Well.

Shonen Knife: "Spectre vs. Rector"

mark s, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rod Stewart - "Slow Graffiti"

Drunk Tom, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

any really good song covered by Los Crudos

Kevin Enas, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I would myself enjoy hearing Tricky taking a shot at a really vicious Cale song, like "Sudden Death" (which would make a great sample as well, moist and ominous). Yeah, I perfectly imagine some grinding noises and metallic echoing drums with Tricky's paranoid mumblings about "the gunman on the roof"... Feels like a Tricky song already...

i don't know about dream covers, but i'd quite like to see any of the following:

dmx - tindersticks my sister

the verve - polvo's bombs that fall from your eyes

daft punk - bad girl's bad girl

guns'n'roses - razorcuts' sorry to embarrass you

manic street preachers - slowdive's slowdive

the ramones - autechre's hub

shed seven - stereolab's percolator

tindersticks - krome & time's sound is for the underground

gareth, Friday, 30 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sunny Day Real Estate - "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Limp Bizkit - "(Get it On) Bang a Gong" That's entertainment.

The Dismemberment Plan - "Losing My Religion" or anything by the Talking Heads.

Keiko, Friday, 30 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I would like to hear:

Spacemen3 covering Iggy and the Stooges

Stereolab covering Neu!

The Jesus and Mary Chain covering the Ronettes

Any Elephant 6 band covering the Beach Boys

The Dandy Warhols covering the Brian Jonestown Massacre...

Erm... wait...

Almost any Magnetic Fields' song cries out to be covered. I dream that big chart acts - "proper pop stars" will start churning out versions of Stephin Merritt songs much as fifties pop stars jumped at Lieber and Stoller or a previous generation went for Irving Berlin:

For starters how about....

'Asleep and Dreaming' as a Hear'say Xmas number 1 'Reno Dakota' as a Daft Punk b-side 'I don't believe in the sun' - Emma Bunton 'Fido your leash is too long' - Madonna 'A pretty girl is like...' - Westlife 'Epitaph for my heart' - Robbie Williams 'I shatter' - Gomez attempting a comeback single 'Lets Pretend we're bunny rabbits' - S Club 7

Cheers to Gareth for the mental concept of DMX covering "My Sister". Simply the mention of it makes me smile; the incongruity of such concepts and ideas coming through in *that* voice and that form of expression.

Momus would do a rather good take on the 'Sticks' "Patchwork", I think.

Mark Kozelek - GnR's November Rain

Geoff, Sunday, 8 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Limp Bizkit doing "I Wish It Would Rain"

They'd take it and make it TOTALLY tuneless.

'Fog On The Tyne' - Christina Aguilera and Ol' Dirty Bastard

Geordie Racer, Monday, 9 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Shortly after posting I dreamt of Charlotte Church singing 'Suicide Solution' to the tune of 'La Vida Loca' and Cradle of Filth doing that Sinatra song about it being 'a very good year'

so very tired

I once had a dream there was a MUZAK cover of Loretta's Scars

Some heavy metal band (preferably a grindcore/death metal band, but not necessarily) should take a stab at covering the Pixies. Especially since the Pixies essentially were a very bad heavy metal band anyway.

Maybe Anal Cunt ... they're from Massachusetts, too.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 27 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What Guy said sounds terribly plausible and right: except that if Robbie Williams covered those songs, I wouldn't like them anymore. Well, I wouldn't like what he did with them, anyway.

Anyway - I can't believe that this is ANOTHER chance to mention

LLOYD COLE singing 'IF YOU DON'T CRY'

- does a tape exist at the bottom of Claudia G's filing cabinets?

Barcelona just _has_ to do a cover of "Baroque Hoedown". Either them or Tipsy.

Dear Yellow Magic Orchestra,
i would love to hear your coverversion of the song Slippin' into Daylight by Blue Rondo a'la Turk. It may be an old song, but so are you.

Thank you very much.

I don’t know if this sounds crazy but

Nina Simone covering “the boom boom bap” by Scritti Politti

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 03:22 (one year ago) link

Nice choice/combination.

From a technical point, this is even possible (Vocal Synthesis).
But it would never be the real thing tho. At some point it's 'picking over the bones'.

meisenfek, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 04:19 (one year ago) link

Saxon doing Winwood's "Higher Love"

they did a helluva good "Ride Like the Wind". but i think they could fuck with the tempo on this one, and every cover of the song is always so wispy folk version where the chorus is all falsettoed

would also kill for a synth-new wave version of Iron Maiden's "Children of the Damned". does one exist?

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 04:23 (one year ago) link

> a synth-new wave version of Iron Maiden's "Children of the Damned". does one exist?

No, just some unrelated Gabber & Hiphop.

I’m pretty sure there’s a whole electro Iron Maiden tribute album, gimme a sec

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:18 (one year ago) link

no “children of the damned”, though

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:19 (one year ago) link

would love to hear the troggs do "can't find the time" — no horn arrangement, more stripped down with just languid, menacing guitars and primal drumming and reg presley delivering the lyrics with his trademark snarl, i think it would sound cool

budo jeru, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 02:57 (one year ago) link

or maybe even in the style of "love is all around"
