The Bevis Frond

Just when I thought I'd never hear another Great Pop Song in my life, I heard The Bevis Frond's 'He'd Be a Diamond'. This is a fanstastic piece of music. However, as I understand it, most of TBF's output is inaccessible psychedelic plodding. I wondered if someone could point me towards any of their output which is more on the lines of 'HBAD'.

dan, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

By the way, there are also legit/mp3 versions out there of cover versions of 'HBAD' by Teenage Fanclub (electric & acoustic), Mary Lou Lord (haven't heard it) and someone else I've forgotten.

dan, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've only dabbled a little in BF, but the couple of albs I've heard by him tend to mix the 'inaccessible psychedelic plodding' (hey, my fave!) w/ more straight-forward pop/rock songs. 'Bevis Through The Looking Glass', for example, includes 'Now You Know', which is a great great tune ripe for the covering.

According to this month's Q mag, Nick Saloman (BF) used to be a regular contestant on 'Countdown'.

Andrew L, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nothing against 'inaccessible psychedelic plodding' per se, but a couple of things i found on Napster were not great.

dan, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Any Gas Faster" or something is a GREAT record. Most of their other stuff is consistently good (or at least what I've heard). Just avoid the Mary Lou Lord record he co-wrote, it's 100% ass and by far the worst thing she ever did.

adam, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yes, saloman was on countdown at least once. i used to watch countdown after school and he was on once, and at the advert break instead of the usual countdown theme, there was a salomonized version. i don't know bevisfronds music really, but was always under the impression that it was noodly hippy stuff.

Inner Marshland

Kodanshi, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one month passes...
where to start...first three lps miasma/inner marshland/triptych all good but quite heavy home recorded psychedelia.triptych includes the great "lights are changing" you'll like that one. .next up "the auntie winnie lp"..much the same but includes the excellent "winters blues" and "will to lose" classic tracks.definately buy "new river head" as its a masterpiece, see also "london stone" and "a gathering of fronds".."any gas faster" is good too.after that they do get a bit samey, sad to say but all still enjoyable.

I just discovered these guys. _What Did For The Dinosaurs_. It's astonishingly good. They excel in mixing non-noisy, accessible psych with hooky songs that sound like an advanced version of Super Furry Animals.

Go back and check out North Circular and Vavona Burr if you like what you've heard already. Some people say the 1st album, Miasma, is also good, but I have no strong opinion on it one way or the other.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

Matt Maxwell to thread!

Search New River Head, and It Just Is. Be aware that each album will have at least one plodding acid rock freakout. Not that I particularly mind.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 08:56 (twenty years ago) link

"Lord Plentiful Reflects", from Any Gas Faster, 's still evidently the greatest BF fave of mine ...and i've got a coupla other
of his rec's from the late-80s and 90s, but have heard nothing after '95-'96
New River Head and Any Gas Faster are fine alb's,
Auntie Winnie Album and Superseeder somehow didn't impress me as much

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 09:38 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, definitely 'new river head' which actually contains 'he'd be a diamond' along with several other lovely hazy pop tunes. and a couple of wonderful epic jimi-style riff monster things (especially 'she's entitled to' which is jimi playing led zepplin or possible the other way round if your into those "it's x doing y" things).

and there're some great ridiculous/brilliant lyrics- "the view from city buses is most wonderous to behold/as the panoply of bridges, domes and alleyways unfolds"

and of course the great non-standard hippy reference to QPR supporters

I don't actually know anything at all about them (or have heard any other records) - it's just one bloke who lives in a west london where the time is always 1968 - is this correct?

adam b (adam b), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 11:21 (twenty years ago) link

Another vote for "New River Head." I'm not a massive Frond fan--have four records, like them all, think they're more-or-less interchangeable, and there's something intrinsically "plodding" about Nick Saloman's sound--but NRH is a few cuts above the others for songwriting. "Drowned" is a real killer off that album as well.

M Specktor (M Specktor), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

I'm listening to _What Did For The Dinosaurs_ again. I'm definitely looking forward to more Frond. I can't believe how good the lyrics are, especially for this kind of music.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 22 May 2003 05:24 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, NRH, but also A Gathering of Fronds which is kind of a companion piece (remaining tracks from the vinyl NRH plus other stuff never before released on CD). What Did For the Dinosaurs is looking to have the same type of effect on me as Daydream Nation -- lots of stuff to digest, a bit of a tough go, but new amazing things keep popping up!

Son of Walter is also great if you like any of BF's "Nick does everything" stuff.

I went back and got the double album, can't remember the title but it's quite good. Except...the band (is is just Nick Salmon
overdubbing himself?) sounds so sloppy sometimes...and other times
incredibly tight. I couldn't figure out what was going on, until
I realized only the DRUMMER is sloppy. When he drops out the band
sounds like a well-oiled machine.

I had such a good time listening to Any Gas Faster, Inner Marshland, and half of Sprawl the other night. When this guy was on, he was ON.

bought "Miasma" in a used CD bin for cheap.

this is really good stuff...what a bunch of weirdos, making little out-of-time lo-fi psych/noise/folk/dadrock in the middle of the 80s...couldn't imagine how they fit in UK rock at the time, probably didn't fit in at all.

but yeah it's cool, some really great pop songs giving way to eccentric freakout parts...super into this, but it took a few listens.

it sort of recalls early Guided By Voices, in spirit not in sound or songwriting...like there's something that seems so insular about it, like these guys making their little fantasy rock worlds on cassette tapes in their hovels....that's always so attractive to me, like you could imagine a little self-contained world that didn't exist anymore, or never really existed in the first place

Ahh, good. Had heard record was recorded at the beginning of the year, but then they thought summer wasn't a good time to release an album, so had said they were going to sit on it for a while. Had fears he'd get all perfectionist & scrap it.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 04:00 (ten years ago) link

Really? The last album was fantastic too. _What Did For The Dinosaurs_ & _Hit Squad_ were a bit of a slump, but still had their moments.

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 12:49 (ten years ago) link

I thought the last album was okay, but a bit restrained. This album is unrestrained Bevis goodness, which I didn't expect. On first listen I think it might be one of his best.

FYI, these guys host a radio show on the MIT radio station called "The Scene", which is a must-listen mostly for the between song banter:

Yes! I listen to their show most every Friday morning. I know absolutely nothing about their band, but love the stuff they play (mostly obscure 60's era psych/freakbeat stuff with a few surprises thrown in) but love the banter, and the stories.

As of this morning, He'd Be A Diamond is the greatest song in the world. I had it on a fabulous compilation a friend made but I'd not heard it in years. Randomly found it and am enraptured all over again.

I used to frequent the same second hand record shop on Wood St walthamstow as he did so have wondered if i wound up with any of his old records.
Great place that, was known as Sounds Familiar at the time.
I met him at a St Vitus show at the Standard near Blackhorse rd in around 1988 too.

Saw him at the Dome in Tufnell Park sometime around then, maybe a couple of years later.

I don't know any of NS's older stuff, but really liking Little Eden, especially the last 2 tracks on disc 1, "The Man In The Garden" and "As I Lay Down To Die".
Heard it playing at Red Eye, Sydney's great record store, and I thought I was listening to some kind of classic NZ Flying Nun-type stuff. I guess similar roots.

Back in the early days of the internet, before I'd really ever heard either, I used to get Bevis Frond and Bardo Pond mixed up fairly often. Anyway, I've since long been a Bardo Pond fan, but just started getting into Bevis Frond with Little Eden. The new one, Focus on Nature, is pretty great too!

he lives somewhere near Hastings nowadays, I saw them play there before covid. he used to have a 2nd hand record shop in nearby Bexhill but quit it a couple of years ago, shame because it was a decent shop, bought quite a lot of stuff the one time I visited it. it's still a record shop so I dunno if he just sold the stock on or if someone else started fresh

i like the latest frond LP a lot but i feel that little eden is his masterpiece. nick's hit rate even after all this time is absurdly high. i suppose it would be when you're writing a song every couple of days
