I'd get it for the Marc Almond track alone...

has no-one lezzed up "je t'aime" before?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Why on earth are the two Melody Nelson tracks being covered by the two worst artists on the comp by far? Everything else looks acceptable-to-potentially-great, but...Christ. BRIAN MOLKO WILL YOU PLEASE GO AWAY YOU FREAKISH LITTLE HOBGOBLIN YOU.

Jealous. (As it is, it's not even a new track -- surfaced on the bonus disc to Sleeping With Ghosts first.)

I remember when they nackr'd "Big Mouth la de da ha ha"

This sucks, I'd love to listen to English-speaking bands singing in French. Otherwise, well it sounds fun.

Jibé (Jibé), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Though, yeah, obviously, these songs will never be done better that by Monsieur Gainsbourg. Can you think of any singer who'd be as great as, if not better than, Gainsbourg for his songs? What artists would you put on your Gainsbourg comp?

Jibé (Jibé), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Mick Harvey to thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Mike Skinner. I mean.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry Ned, Mike Harvey's are pretty cool but they're def not the real deal

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I give him points for trying.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't see the point of tribute albums. I can't think of any I've wanted to listen to more than once or twice for curiosity value.

jz, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Was that Syd Barrett one any good? I dug the concept "Do the songs that Syd could/would not do with a full band, i.e. as they were meant to be", but that album did pretty much create the modern 'tribute' album.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Jarbis Cocker! If only he was called that!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

has no-one lezzed up "je t'aime" before?

I don't think so -- this will be great! (not just because of the lezzing up, but I think Cat Power's voice will work very well with the song)

I don't understand the insistence on translating some of these songs into English ...

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:05 (eighteen years ago) link

The Mick Harvey versions are mostly wonderful but, let's face it, Gainsbourg's originals are all hard to top. Most of the crew assembled for this album makes me want to run for cover.

REQUIEM FOR A JERK! JERK!!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Taking the cue from another current thread ... Killdozer!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 22:37 (eighteen years ago) link

What artists would you put on your Gainsbourg comp?

Momus.
Merritt.
La Laque.
Tom Waits.
Kanye West ("Requiem Pour Un Con," Brion producing).
Myself (duet with Jodie Foster on "69 Annee Erotique").
Luna, obviously.
Puffy Ami Yumi ("Comic Strip").

Didn't someone recently put up a YSI of a Gainsbourg song that was labeled as being performed by Brian Molko and... wait for it... Asia Argento?

That's from the Trash Palace "Positions" album...

Any comp including a track by the Kills has to be shit.

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:01 (eighteen years ago) link

i heard the rakes version of poinçonneur des lilas, and it translates quite well into their own style. i thought it was a good version.
i think this kind of records is funny and brings some fun for a few listens, then you file it and wait until you can show it off to the visits...

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:15 (eighteen years ago) link

this looks awful.

in fact i think i hate it!!

You know you do.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:40 (eighteen years ago) link

if you glare your eyes and look at the tracklistings it almost looks like one of those uncut compilations GAINSBOURG COVERED! plus the kills ... are the direct result of SATAN.

doomie x, Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember seeing Brian Molko on the cover of some magazine, clutching a copy of 'Melody Nelson' under the headline, "My Deviant Music Tastes." The dude looked so pleased with himself.

This album will undoubtedly be shit.

Bobby Peace (Bobby Peace), Friday, 3 February 2006 13:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Any chance of a YSI of the Cocker/Kid Loco track?

D. Bachyrycz, Saturday, 11 February 2006 19:02 (eighteen years ago) link

That's a strange translation of "Je t'aime" ... "I go and I come/Between you" -- huh? That makes no sense. Mick Harvey's translation is much better, but I think I like the Elson/Cat Power song better.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 12 February 2006 07:25 (eighteen years ago) link

In Harvey's version, his voice un-emotes a bored asexuality that feels entirely out of place amidst the dramatic arrangement. Elson and Cat Power's version is more stipped down, but the singing is far more alluring.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 12 February 2006 07:28 (eighteen years ago) link

No, only these two, from a sampler.

myxo, Monday, 13 February 2006 14:04 (eighteen years ago) link

one month passes...
To be completely honest, Stipe's "L'Hotel" is fantastic. It's the best thing with his voice on it since "The Great Beyond."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought it was pretty great; loved the Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin song.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Why's Carla Bruni singing in english? High concept be damned.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 9 April 2006 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Hold up, A NEW TRACK FROM PORTISHEAD?! Did hell freeze over or something? I'm surprised no-one's made a bigger deal over this.

If someone could do the honours with a YSI, I'd be grateful. Even if it turns out to be an unreleased outtake from 1998 or something.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know how to YSI it, but I'm sure I could probably email it to you if it's a bgi deal. It's only 3.4 megabytes.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks, but I think a YSI would be easier. Just go to YouSendIt.com, choose the mp3 in the "Select File To Send" box and click "Send It". Then all you have to do is wait for it to upload(it takes a couple of minutes), and it'll give you a download link when it's finished. It's that simple. You don't even have to put in any email addresses.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:16 (eighteen years ago) link

http://beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=549534146B7605FA

Does that work?

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

It does, thank-you!

Well, it definitely sounds like Portishead, albeit a stripped-down version. No samples or programmed beats apparent. Beth Gibbons sounds a bit throaty, assuming that is her and not a stunt-Beth. Considering it's been almost nine years since the last record, I wonder who's in the band these days?

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm nowhere near my computer now, but I'll try to share "L'Hotel" (sorry, French speakers, for not bothering to find the shortcut to the proper "o" character) when I can. Seriously: the drum machine, the dub bass, the dissonant string crescendo -- if it weren't old Stipey but, I dunno, Milosh or Tiga, half of ILM would be doing backflips right now.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Never mind, I found this: http://www.myspace.com/PORTISHEADALBUM3
It seems they've taken the Broadcast route and got rid of the drummer.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah. It's a pretty cool cover though, I think.
