shame about the first half, but the 2nd half looks really nice.

sort of hard to tell if it's uptempo or not ... i am predicting it will be as good as the bugz in the attic mix, maybe a little better. when are they going to get 4hero to do one of these?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the first half of this looks a bit too eclectic and downtempo, maybe a bit like the second disc of the last Craig Richards edition, where great individual tracks add up to not much.

The advantage of the Bugz mix I think is how surprisingly tight it is: it's difficult to know how this would fare on that score without actually hearing it.

Have 4 Hero done any actual DJ mixes of late? I looked at that comp they did recently and almost bought it but it's always v. expensive (the one in the series with editions also done by Laurent Garnier, Bugz, Kenny Dope etc.)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Lifestyles! I think I could probably sell you one for about 8 euro (if we still have a 4Hero one)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

The lifestyles series often baffles me in that it releases great compilations by groups whose original productions I've never been a fan of.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 29 December 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

lifestyles baffles me because some of the selections are SO obvious.

thank you laurent garnier, for introducing me to can, miles davis, serge gainesbourg, van morrison and john carpenter.

thank you coldcut for compiling such rare tracks as jazzy jay's "its yours", arthur russell's "another thought" and the temptations' "power". don't know where i'd have found those.

similarly bugz in the attic, for exposing us to the most mediocre cuts by forgotten greats such as marvin gaye, herbie hancock, donald byrd and roy ayers.

amazing crate-digging, guys.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 29 December 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Are any of them good vahid?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

That's kinda my problem with the Back To Mine series as well (Richard X and, oddly, MJ Cole, are nice exceptions to this).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

4hero is the best of the series, and it's very good.

Actually, on second thought, after considering Vahid's criticism of the series, I had not realized that the objective was to unearth a bunch of golden unknowns that people with collections numbering in the 1000s of albums had never before known about.

(Vahid, we will always have Urban Tribe.)

(The Bugz volume doesn't look very good, though "Heavy Love Affair" is most definitely not mediocre and the Tom Browne track is worth owning if you have a think for early '80s jazzbo funk. Then again, my standards are kida lax when it comes to GRP's near-monopoly of the Jamaica Queens crossover stuff.)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

(And I will never be good at typing on a laptop.)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

My fave is the 4 Hero one too. The Bugz one left me pretty cold, although I'd say the Coldcut one is def listenable. There's a new one by DJ Spinna out now too, which has yet another track by Norman Connor's Aquarian Dream.

Oh yeah, and the Kenny Dope one totally got me into this group called "Black Sabbath!"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

i'm with andy on the 4hero volume, it's def listenable.

actually the kenny dope one looks very good too (transl: i actually haven't heard any of those tracks! or at least, i don't know their names)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 29 December 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

so - jess thinks this fabric 26 is good!

well, not surprised. i've always heard negative comments abt middleton's live dj skills from ilxors, but i've also always been enamored with his recorded sets ... esp this essential mix from 2002 ...

that tracklist looks way better than the fabric one though.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 30 December 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

actually the 2002 tracklist looks like it could possibly be the best mix ever. electro dolphin broken beat?

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 30 December 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

It would make more sense for the Fabric mix to be credited to Jedi Knights.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

this mix is just more evidence that i'm becoming everything i used to purportedly hate as i get older

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

this mix is just more evidence that i'm becoming everything i used to purportedly hate as i get older

it's the "turning into your parents" phenonemon represented in a mix released by a super-club no less. the self-loathing meter has gone off the charts folks.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 30 December 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

"dad mix"
