Couldn't find any mention on ILM or DJ Martian or something like that. If this is old news please let the thread drop drop like a stone.

More like a radio with a skip function. Nice!

I particularly like the podcast (one day soon I'll even get an ipod!) and the multi-format player tools. And a flash player for at work folks on PC's with restrictions.

ah okay :)

I'm a little behind on blogs/rss and all that recent-ish web tech tbh. I'll get round to it soon enough.

with a '- (minus) Arctic Monkeys' function this would be yet more incredible.

In fact an option to create a personal account and add bands to an 'ignore list' appended to all searches would be super-sweet. Has anyone attempted something liek that yet?

I don't know what to make of that music bloggers roundtable. I find extremely pedantic their collective slag off of other more recent mp3 or music blogs... their 'nothing new under the sun' attitude. Circle jerk.

Moka, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Here's what I don't get. Perpetua's introduction to that roundtable reads:

Matthew Perpetua of Fluxblog.org didn’t start the first mp3 blog, but he usually gets credit for it. Now he is a full-time writer who makes part-time money.

But, this little nugget is on Fluxblog:

Fluxblog is the very first MP3 Blog. It was founded by me, Matthew Perpetua, in 2002.

Everyone sounds cranky in that article, not just forks and Perpetua.

Anyway, I was surprised by how bleak this roundtable was, both about music blogs and the state of the industry. There's obviously no consensus about how artists should expect to make a living, "free culture", the value of commentary, how to find fresh quality music, and other seemingly unsolvable problems.

sciolism, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 20:48 (fourteen years ago) link

blogging has hardly got anything to do with writing. online music "writing" has less to do with writing in any traditional sense than ever. stories are few and far between, it's just release focussed. people indoors online writing about things they read indoors online for other people indoors online.

I don't mean any of the above as value judgements, but I think if you have blogged for any length of time and are now feeling jaded and depressed about it then some of the above may be why.

I always try and take the view that pronouncing large scale changes or developments on things is almost always jumping the gun, but seriously music writing is completely fucked. less people than ever give a flying fuck about it and many are ambivalent or anti...

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 20:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Sciolism, my "bleakness" is born out of real sadness that the vast majority of people putting together mp3blogs (and again, really hate that term) have resorted to full album downloads sans commentary or c+p press releases. I had a utopian vision of people all around the world sharing their thoughts and personal loves in a central basin where everybody could dip in and get a drank. Didn't turn out that way, no no.

Garda, I don't know if I really disagree with you per se, but some of the main reasons I got jaded and more or less stopped adding new material are enumerated here: http://tofuhut.blogspot.com/2008/05/few-words-from-our-sponsor.html
I posted that in a fit of FTW optimism that never quite got followed through on. I'm excited to be writing a bit again now on singles jukebox though; I can feel the writin' muscle loosening up a bit.

im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Also i think there WAS a consensus on how to make a living making music: TOUR. Like, a lot. And I don't think anybody suggested it's difficult to find "fresh quality music"; my problem is finding enough time to listen to everything I already have, much less what's accreting on my hard drive daily. Genius, as they say, is common as flowers.

im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks tofu for taking your very precious time to answer in the less douchey way you could and sorry if I offended you someway. After reading with an open mind the whole roundtable I think I slightly understand the crankiness now.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I'll endeavor to continue sharing my very precious time with you in the less douchey way I can, but leading in to a discussion you'd like to be taken seriously in by talking shit about Matthew from the git-go does not put you in a good position to take the high road dude.

im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I was drunk when I posted that, I thought I made it somewhat clear. For better or for worst ilx doesn't let us non moderators edit our comments.
But oh well, I got a bit upset at the ageist circle jerk some of you had over there and I directed my drunken anger at Matthew because I read his blog on a frequent basis and I was very dissapointed to see he comes out as perhaps the most scorny of all the roundtable, when he seems so cool and laidback when writing on his blog.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 06:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I just sent out a few emails to ask for my CDs to be taken down/links removed. It's pretty depressing when it's a Sharebee page and it says "this link has been accessed 1,543 times". Do I think that means we would've sold 1,543 more CDs without the posting? No, of course not. But 15 more would've been nice.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 06:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe You've sold 15 more records because of it... I know that's maybe only wishful thinking, but it can be comforting to think that.

Still, it's so rude from bloggers to post whole records (if they're not out of print).

J4mi3 H4rl3y (Snowballing), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 06:54 (fourteen years ago) link

moka, we're all just dudes. none of us are over forty. Matt's a little brusque on there but we're all weirdly old before our time in the evergreen web community.

Posting full length in-print albums is pretty bogus but it's become weirdly de facto. Again, even three years ago, that would've been scoffed at as worst case scenario thinking. Five years ago, I was amazed at the idea that a major label would contact a blogger directly. Seven years ago, you couldn't find a popular recording artist with any sort of video/audio accessible to the public. Things are changing really really fast right now.

from what i can tell, the main frustration with mp3 blogs in this day and age is the weird, Hype Machine-fueled, relentless need for the NEW BIG THING -- and I usually end up staying away from those blogs. imo, the best ones -- like Soul Sides for example -- are the ones that take the simple approach of someone sharing choice cuts from their record collection with you. "Here's the stuff I love, and here's why." I love that these kinds of blogs exist and they make the Internet a better place.

i don't doubt that ALL of these mp3 blog people are music lovers -- i mean, they spend a lot of time dealing with music ... it's just that the reason i kinda burned out on a lot of mp3 blogs was that there seemed to be a need to keep finding the new band and then, more often than not, to hype that new band to the high heavens. and, more often than not, the band wouldn't be that good.

By ageist I didn't want to imply that you were old but that your blogs were and that you've been in the game longer than mostly anyone.
I do understand the crankiness at some point if the main complaint is about full album blogs or hype & leak blogs. When I started blogging 4 years ago posting full albums or unauthorized leaks was the unwritten rule that mostly everyone in the mp3 blog community respected and mostly everyone who did share full albums were sharing music which was really odd and hard to find. The honeymoon had to end someday, sure, but that's not a reason to be a jerk abd automatically assume that every new mp3 blog is unworthy of attention or to say you simply don't care about other mp3 blogs but yours.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 18:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Moka I don't think anyone in that article implied that someone newer bringing a high quality mp3 blog to the table would be unwelcome or that they missed the boat on having any cred

the point, for me at least, saying I don't much read other blogs these days (and admittedly, this wasn't really illuminated; we only did one round in the round table and I would've liked to do at least one more) is less that newjacks aren't bringing any quality and more that I'm simply inundated with options to listen to new music, period. Six or seven years ago in pre-YouTube/Facebook/Myspace land, blogs sharing music was the ONLY way, save for P2P, to hear new songs. They're just a less vital part of the workforce these days and it's not even their fault. The industry caught up to what we were doing and they're streaming just about everything. Spotify is on the way at the end of the year. We won! But what did we win?
