Does anybody know where I can download the "Hey man is that Freedom Rock?" "Yeah man!" "Well TURN IT UP, MAN!!" commercial?

I was working at a news channel when that was on. One of the other editors dubbed a same-era airing Yanni commercial so it went:

"Hey man is that YANNI?" "Yeah man!" "Well TURN IT UP, MAN!!"

The word YANNI was in a deep, self-important voice and the result was CLASSIC.

Declan Zimmerman (Declan Zimmerman), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

also - "no my brother you gots to get your own!"

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

a kid i knew had that set and i got turned on to so much great stuff on it. jump into the fire. i'd love to change the world. melanie! that was where my melanie love began. it had great flow. can someone post a track-listing? i actually tried to find one on the internet and gave up.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

There are a lot of classic rock songs that I only know from the brief snippet of the chorus on the freedom rock commercial so I'm always surprised when I hear the verse. To me it should go "American woman, stay away from me / Woah-oh china grove."

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

i used to love memorizing the long snippets of songs from those album comp commercials when i was a kid. even the classical ones!

Cds were still a novelty to me when i heard freedom rock.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

jhoshea on the spot. Hey Love was actually an excellent soul comp, Time-Life was still selling them a couple years ago(I got both volumes) but now OOP apparently. The second volume is going for $75.00 on Amazon.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I bought a 3xLP Creedence best of for $12.00 (plus $3 shipping & handling) from one of these late-night commercials.

Reach Out Of The Darkness - Friend & Lover

BEST SONG EVER!!

Also the worst song ever.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

When I was about 10 I was influenced by the Freedom Rock ads to make a mixtape comprised of every song from the commercial that I could locate between my parents record collection and my own stuff. It must have been while putting that tape together that I heard "Free Bird" for the first time. I got about a side and a half of a 90 minute cassette completed before I gave up.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Reach Out Of The Darkness - Friend & Lover

BEST SONG EVER!!

To back up this assertion: If you listen closely to the refrain, one of them's singing "Freak Out in the darkness" while the other one is singing "reach out of the darkness."

Has anyone done a disc of just early-'70s Jesus-freakdom like Ocean's "Put Your Hand in the Hand"? I'd love to have all of that in one place.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

EVERYBODY SING!
"I THINK IT'S SO GROOVY NOW/THAT PEOPLE ARE FINALLY GETTIN' TOGETHER..."

60s One-hit wonders don't get any better than this.

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

everybody sing "...all I listen to ... is Freedom Rock"

I've been assuming everyone here knows the Frank Black song. You do know the Frank Black song, right?

Declan Zimmerman (Declan Zimmerman), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I could've swore that set came out before 1987.

And just like I can't hear the last half of "Layla" without thinking of Goodfellas, I can't hear the intro without thinking of Freedom Rock.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit, I'm thinking of Guitar Rock!

Haha...I think the Guitar Rock commerical was on for about 7 years whereas Freedom Rock had a much more limited lifetime.

Keith C (lync0), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

So much better than Freedom Fries.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

It's the ONLY "Freedom Rock" I'm familiar with! I have no clue what you people are prattling on about!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised the set went back that far, it seems more like it might have been very early 90's to me. I also seem to recall the guys saying the opening part as having fake long hair, denim, maybe a bandanna or something.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Back to the question at hand.....

Does anyone have a mpg of the Freedom Rock commercial?

DJRokyManson (DJRokyManson), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I also seem to recall the guys saying the opening part as having fake long hair, denim, maybe a bandanna or something.

Absolutely. Weren't they sitting around a campfire, Easy Rider style?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember a campfire, what I remember is a really cheap set behind them if anything. One of them had beads around his neck and was snapping his fingers to the music before the question was asked. But I could just be dreaming all this up and have a bad memory.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Friday, 30 September 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

They tried to give me advice
Down at the record shop
I said sit down boys
This may come as a shock

What’s all I listen to?
It’s all Freedom Rock

How can you free me
When I am free?
I am Free

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Friday, 30 September 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

United We Stand - Brotherhood Of Man

Boy does this one belong on that "Songs that were popular during their initial chart run and then completely vanished off the face of the Earth" thread.

All together now: "There's nowhere in the world!! That I would rather be!!"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 September 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I was just thinking of this exact commercial about a week or two ago and went on a quest. Never came up with anything, even after slogging through a bunch of "80's/retro commercial" websites

I was on a hunt for this and the ones with the Encyclopedia Brittanica kid too. Came up empty on both counts

Hard to believe 1985 was really 20 yrs ago. I guess this is what getting older is all about - random fragments of memory sparking nostalgia over trivial and mundane artifacts.

Thank goodness for the internet :)

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

also, one year a couple of my friends (8th grade, perhaps?) went as the "freedom rock dudes" for halloween.

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

the ones with the Encyclopedia Brittanica kid too.

haaa i vaguely remember that dipshit. how about the time-life books vietnam series commercial where the lil kid says "daddy, what's vietnam?" and the dad kind of frowns and theres ominous music.

amon (eman), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

"BUY THE BOOK"

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

also, bac a few years ago I got it in my head that I *reallllly * wanted to sample the anti-drug PSA where the kid tells his dad "I LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU, OK????" but came up empty then.

i really wish i could just sample my memory, cos most of this shit is clear as a bell in there

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

that was on I Love the 80s not too long ago!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Freedom Rock have "Spooky" on it? Am I hallucinating the guy acting out the words of the chorus with his hands? "Love" = hands over heart; "is kinda crazy" = finger making circles around his ear; "with a spooky" = waggling all fingers at the camera; "little" = thumb and forefinger an inch apart; "girl" = indicating a woman's curves with his hands; "like you" = pointing at the camera.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I was on a hunt for this and the ones with the Encyclopedia Brittanica kid too. Came up empty on both counts

Wish I'd seen that commercial even once, back in the day. Then I wouldn't have spent an hour or two puzzling over that Onion editorial, "Remember Me? The Kid Who Had A Report Due On Space", totally baffled and not laughing.

Here's one for my fellow oldsters: "My father would always say to me, 'Turn that radio down!' And I'd go, "'But, Dad: It's Ssssmokey!'"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone ever think of these commercials as being one song? Meaning the edited snippets become a song unto itself.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 30 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

National Lampoon did a spoof of this on one of their albums with "Bob Dylan" doing the pitch that was really really funny (the snippets were barely a milisecond long) and I kind of thought of that as a song.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

...and the "no my brother, you got get your own" was like the grand ending to the song.

Somewhere in my miles of old VHS tape there's a copy of the "Hey Love" commercial. When I find it, and eventually acquire the technical know-how, it will be shared. Until then, my brothers, you'll have to get your own.

In Chicago, that "...but Dad, it's Smokey!" ad only ran sporadically, but I still remember that part of the ad - I believe it was a white guy with a receding hairline and a beard, delivering the line from the driver's seat of his car, window down.

My all-time favorite (and this is going back a long-ass way) was Chubby Checker in 1972 for some multi-disc oldies set; once we sent away for it, he urges, we'll "have it made in the shade!!!"

Still waiting for a video or DVD comp of those old record ads; the new late night infomercials just aren't the same.

"It’s a little disconcerting to see the nerdy kid from those old “Encyclopedia Brittanica” commercials all grown up and cavorting around porn sets and posting photos of himself with a mouth full of muff on his weblog, but any concerns you may have about the trajectory of self-described “blogger, actor, and pervert” Donavan Freberg’s career will be dispelled once you start perusing his online universe full of behind the scenes smut shots, sexy amateur babes, and assorted alternahotties.
