Classic or Dud? What's he like? New one worth buying etc etc... Info & opinions please...

I thought Drexciya was a two-man outfit? Either way they/he seem intent on preserving an air of mystique, seldom giving interviews etc. 'The Quest' is a fabulous exploration of Detroit electro-funk. Highly recommended. 'Harnessed the Storm' I haven't heard yet, but I'm told last year's 'Digital Tsunami' was a gem.

Expect Omar to elaborate any moment, if he can pull himself away from the new Dutch 'De Subjectivisten' group.

The drexciyan's are a mysterious lot. The new one is decent, but not their best work to date. The second and last track stand out, but the others are not particularly noteworthy.

The Quest is probably their most essential release. Neptune's Layer and Harnessed the Storm are good, but not essential. I would recommend picking up last years Other People's Place album on Warp. It is half of Drexciya, and besides Dopplereffkt, the best thing to come out of that camp.

I still need to hear the Transllusion record.

I reckon a small number of Drexciyans would be able to subdue the mighty Aquatarkus with little trouble.

Andy K, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

oh pooh: drexciyans can breathe underwater but AQUATARKUS CAN BREATHE FIRE ON LAND!!!

Drexciya? Isn't that the name of that famous shemale pornstar? I didn't know (s)he made records. But the "Drexciyan race" references would explain all 'hir' extra...appendages.

The Quest is definatly the best release, I think half of drexiya are behind japanese telecom on international deejay gigolos..

jk, Sunday, 17 February 2002 01:00 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

haha, just had a quick Google to look for the story of the Drexciyians, and stumble across a Mark S quote on the first page i look at (here). my question was the story invented by the band or does it predate them?

michael, Sunday, 17 February 2002 01:00 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

"I think half of drexiya are behind japanese telecom on international deejay gigolos.. "

I thought Japanese Telecom is Dopplereffekt.?. Drexciya's air of mystery is not exclusive to them. It seems 1/3 of the Detroit Electro scene maintains secret identities. Even worse, when I tried to license a Dopplereffekt song for a compilation, he wanted $5000 for the use of one song (as opposed to $500 of the other 13 artists). I tried to get Drexciya tracks but they were very poor about responding to messages. This all just shows how Detroit's Techno/Electro scene is self supported and love to put off anyone not in the loop as the other artists and labels I licensed stuff from were very high profile and cooperative (Rephlex, Intuit-Solar, Joey Boy, etc.)

l, since charltonlido revivied this, I guess this is a good a place as any to post this:

http://remixmag.com/mag/remix_james_stinson/

September 3, 2002, came and went like any other day — until that evening, actually, when a message, startling to most, raced through the electronic-music world with lightning speed. James Marcel Stinson, the driving force behind the enigmatic Drexciya outfit, was dead.

etc.

Actually, what i was really interested in is links to more of the drexciyan mythology. Google seems to go round in circles quoting Kodwo Eshun. Are the sleevenotes to the quest, for example, available anywhere?

Also, C/D? S/D? etc.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Sunday, 12 March 2006 15:58 (eleven years ago) Permalink

for those sleevenotes and more stuff

(very classic btw)

that drexciya blog rules! i was just listening to 'neptune's lair' again recently, would love to hear his take on it.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 12 March 2006 19:48 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Ever since the blues and early jazz, black music has been stolen and exploited. It pisses me off that we let it happen. It s a political thing; everybody talks about it under their breath, but they don t come out and say anything about it. As far as I m concerned, Richie Hawtin, Moby, and all the rest of em can do what they want, but don t step into my house if you don t respect it. Don t even call what you do techno ! I don't want to hear anybody saying Richie started any damned thing, cos he ain t started shit. All he did was step in with his money and his Caucasian persuasion and put himself on the market, and now he s got all these kids riding his jock. We never had rich backgrounds; we were working jobs for $4.25 an hour. Our mamas never gave us money to buy keyboards and put records out. We work for our stuff. That s why there s a big difference in the music. Why do Richie and his Plus 8 family come down here and throw parties in downtown Detroit? He brings in all these kids from the suburbs and from Canada, and that shows a lack of respect. I’ve been to every one of those parties and I’ve never heard an Underground Resistance record, a Cybotron record, a Model 500 record or an Eddie Fowlkes record. It s a total lack of respect, and it s got to stop.

I loath that quote so much. A fine example of a Calimero (as we say around these parts).

(weak spot of course as Eshun stated: Dusseldorf was the Mississippi-delta of techno. :)

So, is there actually any way to acquire "The Quest" without either paying crazy money for it or DLing it illegally? Are there any chances of it being reissued in the future?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:33 (six years ago) Permalink

Is The Quest that long out of print? I didn't realize that... I've had my copy for a long time, I suppose. Anyhow, painfully, amazingly classic stuff. I love the side-projects as well. I named my first cat Drexciya.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:23 (six years ago) Permalink

The cheapest used (cd) copy of it I could find on sale on the net is over 70 euros, so yeah, it's definitely in need of a reissue.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:34 (six years ago) Permalink

There's a copy on ebay which isn't that mad money at the moment. I named my cat heinrich mueller.
