taking sides: Beethoven vs Mozart

Tough one. But since his Clarinet Concerto is the most perfect piece of music ever written, I'll have to side with Mozart.

Let's do the math..

I lean towards Mozart. Particularly late Mozart (yes, clarinet concerto but also requiem, late symphonies and piano concertos). I don't like the bombast of Beethowen's 9th symphony. But I have yet to hear the famous late string quartets so I reserve judgement.

Taking Sides: Tom Hulce vs. Gary Oldman. Both interesting "music" movies, though I like to believe Mozart was the guy Hulce played. It makes his music more interesting for me.

Adam OTM. Hulce/Mozart's laugh beats anything Ludwig did by default.

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I'm going with the 'thoven. Most Mozart puts me to sleep.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

If someone can point me towards something Beethoven has written for voice which is as full-on bonkers as "Der Hoelle Rach", I would be eternally grateful.

Until then, MOZART BABY.

We're going by vocal pieces here? Since when? I like that part in "The Magic Flute" where the bird-thing goes all high up the scale and all, but c'mon, B's cello sonatas? Not even a question. You don't even need to bring the quartets into the equation.

Which is another way of saying "I like Beethoven's way with rhythm better than I like Mozart's."

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm a singer. I like voices. You just described the aria I namechecked from "The Magic Flute". A cello sonata can go fuck itself in the ear as far as I'm concerned.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I know I did. I was describing it in such a way as to highlight its Steve Vai masturbatoy-virtuoist-bullshit. Also, I hate singers.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

You know, for some shocking reason I don't care?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Hey, just like my attitude towards choral pieces.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Gold star for you, then.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Mozart = I .......V!.......I!.......V!........I!...V!...I...V...I.V.I.V.I.V.I.V.IVIVIVIVIVIVI...I...IIIIIIIIII!!!!

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Ain't it beautiful?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Beethoven - overall less prolific but wrote at least several things that I could not live without

Mozart - reams and reams of 'pleasant' music

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

If you were any more wrong you'd sprout wings. Of wrongness.

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

That's ok, because I'd be too bored to fly ... as a result of listening to Mozart.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Mozart. The power of Don Giovanni compels me.
