Holy is the opposite of profane. Typical profane music would be muzak or chart music which is played in supermarkets in the background. Holy music would be music you'd listen to 100%. You'd not listen to everywhere. Only in certain places. Godspeed YBE! come to mind. There is some aura to their music. I like to listen to it in the dark. Passion by Gabriel is another good example (thanks Ned). There the rhythm is the holy element.

Bach. Bach. and more Bach. Brahms. Berio. No Part--at least not for the right reasons anyway, I've always had this sneaking suspicion that what I felt about it wasn't what he wanted to communicate, but what the marketing department over at brill ECM has done. Much like Gavin Bryar. There's plenty of non-Western music that has an ascetic quality, but it might be me placing a Western frame around it, anthropomorphising and misappropriating.

Gabriel's Passion reminds me of Lanois's work. Treachly stuff at best, cloying at worst. But God did I play that thing to death in high school. Yeesh.
