Best ever excuses for "No Files Shared"

I just re-woke my Soulseek to find a message from an off-line user who was grabbing loads of stuff off my machine without sharing anything. It said:
"Why are you bothering me, my cousin died today and I don't want to talk to anyone" (and then something in Spanish). I think this is the best anyone has ever hit me back with. Can anyone top it?

No but I was sad I never got to use my 'oh this is my work account so I can't really share here, here's my home account username...' one. Now I just don't use slsk at work.

I do care people leeching. Odds are that I won't grab anything from them but I just hate that people don't share with all the rest of the users. Slsk's purpose is that of sharing, so why not keeping up with that? Download as much as you want, but if I'm sharing +20,000 files why shouldn't you share with the rest?

i live for banning leeches on soulseek. seriously. although rather than ban them straightaway, I abort each download just as they're at about the 95% point...do that for a few tunes, and THEN ban (or constantly move whatever files they're trying to download). next i need to try and figure out how to spray water in their faces, you know, tom cruise style.

it's not my fault i only have a 1 gig harddrive you pricks! (the people i hate the most are the ones who immediately ban you if you dont have tons of files in whatever their favorite genre is.)

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to ban compulsively(d thom, you are my teacher) but now I've taken to just deleting their uploads so they're constantly at the back of the queue like sisyphus pushing the rock, then I might let them upload after a few days(after an explanation). When I see no files shared I automatically think it's johnny law at worst, a clueless user at best but I figure if you know how to use it at all you should have the wherewithal to share a fucking file. Anything! I just want to see something there.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah for a while I had the same problem as Strongo.

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:47 (eighteen years ago) link

let me backup a bit just by saying (i was partly funning above, in my tone anyway) that i don't automatically ban users until really checking to verify that they're not sharing, and often i'll message them first with a 'hey, i can't seem to access your files' sort of note...when it's clear they've got nothing, then the games begin.

i'm 100% with strng hlkngtn though about users banning because a) you don't have enough files in their view, or b) (even worse) they have no use for what your sharing....had a huge, 40-messages-back-and-forth fight with another user over this (they banned me because the 4,000 files i was sharing didn't jive precisely with their tastes).

d thom w, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't care what or how much you share: the point is to make the give and take possible, instead of just the take.

most people didn't respond to my messages when I asked them to share some folders - so I stopped messaging and started just banning from the jump. I should probably be more circumspect, tho.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

People who aren't sharing anything, who don't message you, who then try to download entire albums from you despite the fact that they are on dialup and it will take forever and a day to happen are the only folks I will out and out and ban and even then I only do it if it's really just blatantly rude--like who the fuck tries to download a double album from someone they don't know on a 56k modem (and frankly I'm sort of doing them a favor--I don't keep my slsk on all the time so it's better them trying to get the stuff from someone who won't turn off his computer in the middle of their download.) I usually only check though when I about to turn of the computer anyway and someone's got a whole shitload of junk in there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I feel like a complete asshole because I reinstalled slsk and have been leeching off people while sharing absolutely nothing. Now I'll go back to being a jerk by not being online very long at a time. Running slsk primarily off your laptop isn't the best.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

slsk's interface for makings folders shared is fucking horrible. that's why at the moment I only have like six albums shared. If you could just "select all" and then click off things you didn't want to share that would be great; instead, you have to do it folder by folder.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

haha yeah on some level i am surprised i can use slsk at all...whoever lets me spend four hours downloading an album is very, very kind.

People that compulsively fuck w/other people on SoulSeek are sad, sad little folks, indeed.

I go out of my way to follow individual users' rules and yet I still manage to get banned now and again for some stupid "infraction" or another. I kind of feel sorry for them. I don't really notice "leechers" because I'm usually busy doing something more constructive than obsessively watching my uploads window.

Deric W. Holloway, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I recently dealt with some fuck who had all .flac files and would only share with other people who .flac files! mp3s are too inferior of a format for this person (my files were 100% mp3s), so even if this someone 50,000 amazing mp3 files, this person still wouldn't share. After arguing with this person for awhile (I wouldn't have bothered, but s/he has been literally the only person I've seen with a particular album), I finally gave up and left a sarcastic "whatever, thanks for sharing!" type of message. I had a game of Scrabble to attend to, after all. When I checked slsk later, the person had let me dl the files after all! Victory! Lingbert 1, Fuck User 0. The funny thing was, after I went through the trouble of figuring out how to actually play .flac, the files turned out to be a shitty vinyl rip that probably didn't benefit from being on a lossless format anyway.

Well, if you only have a 56k connection, leechers take away bandwidth that can be used for (downloads from|uploads to) legitimate swappers.
There's been waaaay to many incidents where I'm cheerily swapping with somebody, while chatting merrily along in the chat window, and suddenly the bandwidth dissappears down the gullet of some leech with a penchant for trying to download the entire swap directory...all at once...largest files first....AND BITCHING AT ME IN ANOTHER CHAT WINDOW FOR NOT HAVING ANY NU-METAL.

Does it really bother people if people leech off them?

kinda, yeah. i'm always on the lookout for new people to download from, so i like to browse the users in my upload window and see what they've got. and even if they're just sharing a small handful of folders, there's a chance there might be something i'm interested in. no hard drive space? share an mp3 disc. people KNOW the basic rules of p2p; not to comply is just dickish.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

On a similar note, does anyone know how I'd be able to share a folder on a network drive? It allows me to save to a network drive, but even after I allow sharing to the network drive that my mp3s reside in, it disappears from the list of shared folders.

It's not hard to extend the same courtesies online that you would in real life- personally, I share only w/ those on my list (but add people to my list as i d/l from them). I can't figure out how to configure SoulSeek around my firewall. Someone told me how a while ago, but I don't even know where to go in order to A) enable port forwarding through router settings, B) go into network settings, open slsk port under firewall exceptions, and C) enable internet connection sharing. Admittedly, I'm also really nervous about doing that as my computer's really old and I'm afraid I'll fuck up something.

I don't share at work, because outbound traffic is more closely monitored than inbound. That's how some people got busted for using Kazaa a while back, because they had lots of remote users connecting to their PCs outside work hours and it was investigated. I get banned all the time, but I just queue up from someone else. Or if it's something hard to find I just wait til I get home and queue it up there.

I've asked a few times "So what is it with you 'no files shared' guys anyway?"
And the answer is always "How am I supposed to know who is downloading from me if I leave it open? I do not add people to my list unless I know who they are" or some other nonsensical response. The reason is invariably related to getting 'busted' for sharing. I think alot of the leechers have been scared off by their mis-interpretation of the recent Grokster decision, because I haven't noticed many of their sort downloading from me lately.

The only person I've ever banned was in retaliation for the "Your files don't interest me" so I banned him just in case he changed his mind.

I've got this in my personal info:
If you have more than five stupid rules for downloading listed in your profile, you are subject to BANNIFICATION!!!

I've had to walk several users through the process of sharing a folder. In a few cases, they were just too thick to accomplish it. But mostly they're very grateful for the instruction.

And, of course, the opportunity to download whatever I stopped them from getting in the first place. Often, they even have kickass collections that I end up snapping up a bunch of.

This one is great (especially the stuff about replying to messages):

***As of 2006***

I'm starting to ban people.
I'll only do so for a couple of reasons, they are as follows:

1. If you aren't sharing stuff - banned.

2. If I message you and you don't respond in a timely fashion = banned.
I'm not big on chatting, so if I message you it's important. Well... as important as any of this stuff can be I s'pose. Really it's just a matter of being civil. It's far too easy to just be assholes to people who you can't see - lets' be nice to each other, deal?. Oh - and if you message me and I don't respond - I'm busy. or not home. I'll get back to you when I'm around.

3. If you only log on to grab stuff from me, then log off before I'm done getting stuff from you... and don't log back on for over a week - you are a LEECH as far as I'm concerned. Go use Limewire with all the other leeches.

SHAME ON YOU!!

IS THIS HOW YOU ARE IN THE SACK?? YOU JUST GET YOURS AND ROLL OVER TO SLEEP?

Good. I should hope not.
...............................................................
OK, Back to the Original Message:

Hey!

If you can't browse my files, it's cuz I got paranoid and went list only. Message me and i'll add ya. But plan on being subjected to a battery of tests to prove you are not the Man, Also - if I can't browse your files, i'm not adding you. Nothing personal, but I already have 2 infractions for filesharing copyrighted shit, and my ISP is about to drop me.

Now for the good news:
Since i'm list-only, I almost never have a queue, so go ahead and take as much as you like.

Re; insane attempts to download half a drive, I've done this once or twice by accident but only because the user hadn't files organised in folders and i assumed the had, thereby triggering the insane folder download when trying to get an album. I think it's good P2P etiquette to get folders sorted but so is it to make sure you're not downloading an entire mp3 collection. Accidents will happen.

My mp3 collection is stuck behind a college firewall 100 miles from where I can download, meaning I have about 2 gigs to share at any time on an old home laptop and often none as I have to burn them off and take em away. So I get irritated by people with itchy ban buttons, it's not in the spirit of the whole thing is it? I should get an external hard drive I suppose and risk damaging it in bus holds so prissy people who might not want anything I have at all can't justify banning me.

And now I'm off to the beach, sun sun sun.

What I get a kick out of are the Parasites, Leeches, whatever you want to call them and their whining about being banned. Well, Here's the way I see it. This is Obviously NOT their first rodeo when it comes to just taking and Never giving in return, and I don't mean just P2P sharing either. Sharing anything probably takes to much effort for someone like you, and it's Not your job to do some pansy-assed thing like that anyway. That's for the rest of us to do. For You. But isn't that the way you are with every aspect of your life? We're all here for your convenience, is it? Or is it that you are too ignorant to set up a "shared folder". Well I think that it's probably a whole lot of both. What's the matter. Don't have anyone there to do it for you? If you think theirs a chance that you might get banned by someone and don't want to feel that hurt and rejection that you're all whining about, then try READING the persons "User Info". That might just give you a clue as to his attitude towards your kind, and you won't have to go through all this rejection you're feeling now. CAN YOU READ? Or is it, Fuck this Punk, He owes me too. RE:"pirating music is illegal!"
-- DEEDS NOT WORDS (vfoz...), April 25th, 2006.

Listen. There's a Big difference between sharing music, or anything else for that matter, and pirating. After spending ,(or should I say being Gouged or Pirated), sometimes for more than $20.00 for a CD that's lining some music Mogul's pocket, I Dare you to say Who I can share it with. It's kind of like our old friend bill Gates, who started this crock of shit, saying that after spending almost $200 for a 5 cent piece of plastic CD, he wrote His Own Laws into his software saying that not only do you have NO right to share it with someone else, which is Moderately understandable if He was the one who worked and paid for that silly piece of plastic in the first place, which he DID NOT, but make it against the Law according to Dave for you to put it on a different computer of yours if your original one breaks down. What next. having rules on rolls of toilet paper, saying you can only use it on your ass, and your ass only? And the 1st. 10 sheets of it being your use agreement, your EULA? Makes about as much sense to me.
I guarantee that there is not a single one of these whiners who could lie their way out of this next scenario, at least any one of them older than maybe 30 years old:
Being 20 years old, maybe borrowing your roomates car (OMG, I wonder if that's breaking the law),picking up your new girlfriend, cruisin' down the boulevard listening to that new led zeppelin album you just recorded onto a tDK cassette tape from your album, the one you made 2 copies of and sent to your cousin in kentiucky who'd never heard of them until i sent it to him. Now your cousin and all of his friends are total led zeppelin freaks, and their friends and on and on.
Anyway, back to the good stuff. Cruisin back home after maybe a movie, breaking out a vintage year bottle of Boones Farm wine and turning on your old TEAC reel to reel tape recorder with 8 solid hours of the kind of music that makes everything come together just right.
But, OMG, they're breaking my door down. They're taking everything. My TEAC, my friends cassette player, his car that he shared with me, no...not my brother's Levi's I borrowed. Wait a minute now. You can't take my girlfriend Sharon Peters, I've NEVER shared her with anyone. She did What? I don't believe it!
Sorry, got carried away, but that is Exactly what those GREEDY Son of a Bitches are doing. Going a little too far, You Think. You think that maybe this is going into Phase 2 of this new "Homeland Security"
Bottom line Mr. Music(my ass) Mogul, more like Mr. Money Mogul. did you ever record a cassette or a reel to reel tape when you were younger. Just how did that make you feel then ? Did you feel like a Pirate, or did that New Age term everyone uses now only come about when your greed took over, and what you were ripping off from the American people and the musicians just wasn't enough to satisfy you?
Is this Phase 2 of corporate americas plan with the governments approval, to even take away the right to share music with a friend? Call it anything, you don't care, as long as there's money connected with it, and it makes it's way into your pocket. If anyone should be called a pirate it's heartless, greedy people like you.
And don't lay this bullshit line on everyone about it ripping off the musicians. That is another one of your Guilt trips you lay on people to line your pockets even more. And I Know this because I am a musician and I've had to deal with your kind more times than I even like to remember. Where I'm from, and I guess it must be some place that you're not, I would feel, and I did feel honored if people liked me, and thought enough about my music that they would want to share it with someone else. Just how do you think musicians become known? People turn each other on to new music with the kind of free advertising that money can not buy. Even your money.
Imagine if this was all turned around on your greedy asses and everyone who was sharing music sent you a bill for all the free promotion and advertising you're getting. But they won't, and do you know why? Because, being NOTHING like YOU, to them it's NOT about the MONEY. It's about the MUSIC!!!!!!!!

No there isn't, you jackass. If you are going to steal music, at least stop lying to yourself about it, and save your bullshit, self righteous drama for when you get busted.

By the way, I totally ban people who don't share. The "dude y did u ban me" messages are like chocolate angel kisses.

I was banned last night by a guy who was already downloading stuff from me. That has to be some kind of record-setting asshole slsk behavior.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Let me clarify that:

1 - I find this user dling files from me.

2 - I hit browse users files to see if he is sharing.

3 - He is, so I check out his stuff and find a folder I want to get, and queue it up.

4 - I am banned by this user.

I mean...DAMN.

If i was downloading music for any other reason than to enjoy it for it's own sake , such as making copies to sell, then yes you could say it is piracy what I'm doing, and I should have to answer for it. But, Since this NOT the case, and YOU are also in there using SLSK, it makes me wonder exactly what you are doing there. Since YOU consider it stealing and piracy, I guess by telling everyone else that they are thieves you justify yourself as being one and not alone in this. No, I think it is going to be you and your little business you obviously have going and your chocolate angel kisses that are going to be the hit of Leavonworth when they bust your "jackass":, JACKASS. BTW, How much do you get for your CD's. I'm sure BUBBA will Love your little chocolate angel kisses. Speak for yourself asswipe when you go calling someone a thief, because obviously you are. Have Fun

I think I have just found a benchmark in Soulseek retardedness.

It started with this:
[11:33][silent pair] oh no - banned by the illiterate cunt with m4a files
[11:33][silent pair] fuckign twat

Which was funny enough, what with the bad spelling / stones glass houses thing.
Then it got awesome, the guy assumed that I must have ignored him, so he set up another Soulseek user account just to try and insult me, which produced this absolute gem:

"to badd your to retarted to read fuckign cunt"

I would love to meet this guy in real life. He must LOVE mp3s. A lot.

Here is a great message to send people when banning them.

Hello, Soulseek has reported to me that there are no files in your public share just now. So I am sorry to have to inform you that you are banned for the time being. The reason for this detected bad share is of no importance – whether technical, temporary or otherwise. Our bandwidth is limited... We want to favour users that share seriously, without being asked to. Your music, videos or docs need to appear in searches by other users. So you need to CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY. We expect you to abide by "quid pro quo". So no taking without giving . . . even just a little! Et tu ne parles pas Shakespeare ? Tant pis, franchement. No habla Ingles ? «algo por algo» ! qui pro quo ! Dieses für das ! DON’T DON’T DON’T reply to this chat now… I am obliged to ban too many people to spend time chatting. Any replies to this message will not be read as you will be put you on IGNORE. And your login will never access my collection again. However if you fix the problem, if you can see you are at times uploading files to other users (not in your user list), you may contact me in a few days AFTER we have both rebooted. I will then unban you IF ANOTHER user friend of mine can confirm to me that your sharing has become effective (even a modest collection of *organised* files is of use to the community). For etiquette, please see http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Being-Banned-on-Soulseek Why do we ban every bad downloader we see? Because Soulseek is going to keep working only if we share effectively. And out of a sense and fairness and equity. And outrage at the large number of scroungers (this is not to imply that you are necessarily one just now!). As upload usage is often at 100%, there is no reason to be kind to an account that has not effectively been sharing with me or with the community at the time you tried downloading.

tldr

iatee, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 21:39 (fourteen years ago) link

And to find out quickly if someone is sharing or not, just right click "Add to list", and see if empty or not. It is invariably accurate. However quite a number of users will authorise as soon as they are banned. So the Files count suddenly goes from nothing to some good figure. And they will come back and accuse you of acting too fast!
Asking for independent validation puts an effective end to this game.

Some freeloaders say they cant speak English.
Others will play victim, with messages like "I am so saddened".
A few will try to put you to shame, e.g "You are so aggressive".
Some try to start a chat e.g. "Can you please advise me...", sometimes after reincarnation as another user.

Once I managed to view the chat history of a freeloader, and it was full of messages to other users in the past such as "I'm new", "Pls just one song". "I'm on the laptop"

And after getting a message like the one above, explaining why banned, almost no one will ever come back after a few days saying they are now sharing, and if the ban can be removed.

"pls just one song" = just a song junkie trying to get his fix

iatee, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I'm pretty straightforward and low-impact about my "leeching," which basically involves occasionally downloading one or two songs, for reference or whatever, and sharing the download folder they all go into. So I find it slightly funny when someone bothers banning me or sending me a message about it. I know people care about the p2p ecosystem and all, and don't really mind being banned, but sending a whole message seems like a bit too much energy to put into a guy grabbing one old Black Sheep single off you (and offering a carefully curated selection of like two dozen random calypso numbers, Smiths covers, and bad electro in return!).

i have ONE rule on slsk... you must share your entire library...mot just 2 tracks. ALL "no files shared" leeches are immediately banned without warning....fuck leeches. everyone else is welcome. now if you want to be on my user list, the rules are a little tougher. the way i see it..those on my list get front of the line access to my 50000 high quality tracks, so they need to have the kind of files i want for the privilege of getting that access. the bottom line is this; the person with the files can run their shit in any which way they damn well please...and those who want files from them just need to shut the fuck up and follow a few simple rules...or look elsewhere.

xpost it's true

Though it kind of reminds me of this horrible person I knew when I lived in China. I had to share a taxi with him 3 days a week (long boring story), and every fucking day he'd tell me about an argument he'd had with someone in the past. But the way he'd recount these arguments, he'd cast me as the person he was arguing with in the past, and then he'd basically end up screaming at me in the course of his story. Like he'd be pointing at me as he was yelling "YOU" and his voice would get louder and louder. And of course, it was in English so the taxi drivers probably always assumed this guy was actually arguing with me. Totally crazy.

here's my excuse: it's usually when i swap out a hard drive or upgrade my os something, and some folder changes and i'm no longer sharing the right folder, but i don't realize it. then, right when i'm in the middle of downloading something obscure that i REALLY want that only ONE PERSON has, they ban me for not sharing files. usually i send em off a quick message saying "sorry i was defragging my drive, check now you'll see my 17,000 shared files. so can you unban me now?"

i rarely get a response/unban, if i do i often wind up chatting a bit about music with my fellow music fan, otherwise if no response at all i just ban em back and forget about it.

Leech: "Why are you bothering me, my cousin died today and I don't want to talk to anyone"
Soulseeker: "Well, then why aren't you visiting your cousins gravesite to show proper respect instead of leeching off of me?"

foolish though i know it is to correct a cust0s, but if the dude's cousin just died that day, he would have to have been pretty prescient to already have a gravesite arranged
