unfortunately Jon Whitney has not made any new public statements as of yet, so everything is pure speculation and mystery at this point

lots of talk on the public FB Coil page as well...

Not about the withdrawal, but about the situation in general: my understanding is that there was a lot of bickering and infighting between rival parties and that there was a large enough group of them (surviving band members, ex-boyfriends, and superfans who saw themselves as archivists) that no clear majority with moral authority / followthrough emerged, and so the result is bitterness and mutual hostility and shady bootlegs and short term thinking. I saw some offers that were made to a consortium of those involved that could have solved this in a responsible way, and I heard about offers from reissue labels that wanted to do a one time, high priced box thing, and I think it all just collapsed because no one could agree about who had the right to do what, what figure was the right figure, what option was best. So this is where their legacy stands right now.

I have also seen some shocking posts from Chris and Cosey on Twitter alleging that Thighpaulsandra is selling off bits of Geff and Sleazy's archive on eBay (including priceless things such as the first letter Geff wrote to Sleazy as a teen) and if that is true it is really despicable- that should be archived properly by a library / museum. That is queer history. That is occult history. That is not some trinket with which to make a quick buck. Shame.

Someone made these inserts with more info - http://www.barringtonarts.com/Coil_CD_Inserts.rar

Meanwhile, I received an envelope from FE containing the invoice. The actual CDs are probably with customs now, I guess :-(

StanM, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

as I understand it, it is Danny Hyde who is selling off a lot of Coil archival material

snap. am now expecting a hefty customs charge. :-(

whatever happens next, i sincerely hope it's not this. there are lots of people out there hungry for coil vinyl, many of them too young to have ever purchased coil records before and it would be great to see their music available to those who don't have the funds to buy an elitist box set.

I agree, a more long term commitment to keeping individual albums in print will let people of all kinds discover the catalog, and it will let people who are more likely to want album x or y find out about them

a bourgeois collector object is likely to be bought by the very people who probably already own the albums on other formats anyway (such as myself- I have the albums on vinyl and on CD already), so it doesn't get the band any new fans and it might squelch efforts to bring the albums to the wider, newer audience they deserve

update: http://brainwashed.com/bark/projects-coil.html

Thank you to everyone who has supported the launch of Threshold Archives. It is something to be proud of. It has made a lot of people very happy to have the beginnings of the project Peter began finally come to light after so many years. The first phase accomplished its goals: to establish it as a viable entity, to be affordable, available, to preserve the legacy, and work as a model to compensate contributors and survivors when bootleg practices and exploiters run rampant worldwide.

In order to continue, however, it is necessary to step away and let someone else take responsibility. The new custodian of Threshold Archives has the infrastructure to meet the requirements, manage accounting and royalties, and establish a trust dedicated to reaching agreements with various stakeholders fairly and ethically.

Brainwashed will only serve in a wholly unpaid advisory capacity from here on. The project is temporarily on hold while the details are being worked out. All apologies to those who have missed the first run but please be patient and try to resist temptation to pay scalpers and opportunists on the auction sites and trading sites.

Thank you again.

Good to know, but if this was Whitney's intention all along then he should have said so from the off.

people were still managing to pick up complete sets of 8 as of yesterday, fwiw

as I see it he's saying that he doesn't want to deal with the repress and keeping them in print, so somebody else is gonna do it, like a real label. this is for the best imo.

agree that it probably could have been handled better and w/more communication (specifically, it would be nice to know if the Amazon pre-orders for Nov. 13th are still valid). But I can't imagine it'll take very long for these new releases to show up in some new form. I'd bet money it'll happen before the repress of England's Hidden Reverse ;)

sleeve, Monday, 2 November 2015 15:20 (eight years ago) link

no one is making anyone buy these from scalpers; and if you're looking for most of this stuff you can probably find it now illegally, so go for it; but jon should get a commendation for making an attempt to do this legitimately, and for setting it up for the future. i'm sorry if everyone didn't get in on the first cut of the pie but there will be another pie.

akm, Monday, 2 November 2015 15:23 (eight years ago) link

wow. sold the horse rotorvator masters three years back. fucking nightmare. I have a bunch of master tapes in the basement that eat up a lot of space and probably should be in better climate but better that they degrade under my watch than fall into indifferent hands

sleeve, Monday, 2 November 2015 16:08 (eight years ago) link

wait what? who sold those masters? and to whom?

akm, Monday, 2 November 2015 16:58 (eight years ago) link

I wonder who'll continue the Threshold Archives releases - I'm guessing it's Stevo :-)

StanM, Monday, 2 November 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link

I think it was Thighpaulsandra who sold all the stuff - here's the total listing of completed auctions of priceless stuff which will sit on shelves and someday vanish:

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 2 November 2015 18:55 (eight years ago) link

well...

These tapes are genuine COIL, originally from Geff & Sleazy's personal archive.
A certificate of provenance, signed by Thighpaulsandra, will be included with these items.

I guess the seller could have bought it from him, but it seems unlikely.

Received the 8 CDs from Forced Exposure, not sure what to think yet. Very first impression? Nothing that's so unmissable that it blows the originally released versions out of the water? Maybe I'll change my mind after a couple of listens, don't know yet.

StanM, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

the very first track on The Angelic Conversation is "How To Destroy Angels" btw, not "Ascension/Enochian Calling/Angelic Stations" as it says on discogs

StanM, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:30 (eight years ago) link

whaaat

are those different tracks on the orig CD? I'm very unfamiliar with that one

note also that the Anal Staircase CD accidentally has the regular LP mix instead of the 'Relentless" mix

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

sigh

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:48 (eight years ago) link

xp: the original CD has Judi Dench reading sonnets by Shakespeare, this one is Dameless and has totally different track lengths
+ yep, The Anal Staircase is the LP mix but slightly longer (about 10 seconds)

StanM, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:57 (eight years ago) link

right but have the three tracks you cited been *replaced* by HTDA, or were they simply retitled/reindexed versions of HTDA originally? i.e., have the CD's contents changed other than taking the recitation out?

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

(I am still waiting on my copy of this, I got it after the other seven)

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

I just compared them visually in some sound editing program and I stand corrected. They were originally made up from the same samples as HTDA and this one new long track does indeed look more like the first three tracks from the original TAC record with some bits in between. The track length (16:37, just like HTDA) and the sonic similarities were confusing. Apologies.

StanM, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

no, that's great, thanks for the detailed answer

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link

So, since Amazon still has these up for pre-order for a 11/13 release date, I threw the dice and ordered three of them today. I expect to have the order canceled at some point, but who knows? Maybe Amazon got some of these before the "recall" or whatever it was and can actually ship them to arrive on time. I'm choosing to be cautiously optimistic. Maybe I should order all of them?

Wimmels, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:30 (eight years ago) link

worth a try imo

got my Angelic Conversation disc yesterday (from Boomkat), so much more enjoyable w/o the spoken word parts

at some point I'm gonna try and write up some impressions, there are some real gems scattered about on these discs

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:49 (eight years ago) link

really? I like the spoken word parts on that.

akm, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 18:37 (eight years ago) link

well sure, I don't dislike that version, but it's a totally different experience without them, like listening to an ambient record. lots of details that I had missed previously.

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

RIP Jhonn, ten long years without your voice.

sleeve, Friday, 13 November 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

Amazon order canceled. I expected that, I guess.

Wimmels, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:06 (eight years ago) link

I still haven't got any Coil, should I wait a bit to see if any definitive reissues come out? I nearly bought Scatology a few times 8 years ago but I wasn't sure if it was the version approved by the band.

XP: 11 years. Not meaning to be a dick at all and pedants are evil scum... I was just reading the new edition of England's Hidden Reverse two days ago so it's fresh in my mind.

Doran, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

Robert: You know there are plenty of more recent Coil albums that are quite easy to get hold of I think. Remote Viewer isn't that highly rated but I think it's great late period Coil with Mike York's amazing Breton Pipes. Very psychedelic and drone-y. You can get an official DL of it from the Threshold House site for like four quid I think. It might not be the best but still a steal at that price.

Doran, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link

And you can get a WAV DL of Love's Secret Domain from the same source! For a tenner! Moon's Milk for seven quid... I had no idea! I'm glad I looked now.

Doran, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:22 (eight years ago) link

xps ELEVEN years

sorry Doran, I got delayed but the post was typed I promise ;)

sleeve, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:24 (eight years ago) link

I just got a copy of the Remote Viewer 2CD in the mail today, very psyched to listen as I don't think I've ever heard the 2nd disc

sleeve, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:25 (eight years ago) link

also, is that an advance copy of the book or is SAP actually mailing them out?!?

sleeve, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

Ah, sorry, bit of an accidental humblebrag there, but I share a publisher with David Keenan so I got to see the new PDF ahead of time as I was recording a segment on Coil for BBC 6Music's Freakier Zone tomorrow night just yesterday, so wanted to do a bit of last minute cramming before the show. It's a shame I don't share the author's pugilistic abilities and enjoy the same high regard among the readers of The WIRE as well but you can't have it all. What I can say, judging by the electronic edition I've read, is it's going to be a fine tome - I won't say anything else as I think they're still sweating over what's going in that final proof that goes to print - but the reprint is long overdue, I'm sure you'll agree.
