Minutemen, Husker Du, Black Flag, yeah, yeah, yeah - of course.

In addition to all the groovy groups already mentioned - Dredd Foole and the Din on Homestead! One for the Mission of Burma/Volcano Suns fans, at the very least.

Trumans Water, first few albums. Great, great stuff. Opal, yus, early Dino Jr. By all accounts Saint Vitus are wonderfully strange, and I've had a soft spot for some Leaving Trains stuff over the moons.

Homestead search: Happy Flowers. HAPPY! FLOWERS! And all the early stuff like Verlaines, Chills, Nick Cave, Neubauten and Dinosaur Jr, though you can get em on other labels now, I guess

Homestead destroy: can't think of anything. SST search: Negativland! Hee hee! Oh, and Pell Mell.
SST destroy: Greg Ginn, for being a knob.
SST ehhhhh: Sister Double Happiness, who always got glowing reviews, but just sounded boring as hell when I finally got ahold of 'em.

Search: Saccharine trust
Not too sure about: Universal Congress Of - any opinions?

SST, man I grew up in suburban chicago but SST records was a big part of my life. There was a loser record store in town for a while called Empire Records I think, they were real into SST stuff there, various SST bands would do in store shows there (but the neighbors always called the police to shut it down). I got tons of that stuff. A lot of it was bad pre-grunge sub metal noise crap, but they did release a lot of good stuff too: Black Flag, Minutemen, Husker Du,

I got tons of that stuff. A lot of it was bad pre-grunge sub metal noise crap, but they did release a lot of good stuff too: Black Flag, Minutemen, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, the besxt Dino Jr. and Sonic Youth records, Saccharine Trust, Slovenly, Bad Brains I Against I, Opal, Descendents, Firehouse, Even Soundgarden--what a great label, really a big part of the 80s US music scene.

The stuff to avoid includes St. Vitus, October Faction, SWA, DC3, Leaving Trains, Blast, SCreaming Trees, Gone, etc. and these things even have some sort of awful tossed off charm now and then.

So, what's the deal with SST now? They are still going kind of, right? Where can I read something that tells the whole sordid story of bankruptcies, feuds, etc. etc.?

sorry I cliked the submit button too soon the first time...

Homestead search: Salem 66! SO GOOD! Also that fantastic Homestead comp _Human Music_.

Also that fantastic Homestead comp _Human Music_.

I missed that one - but I still listen to 'The Wailing Ultimate' occasionally. Great Salem 66 track on it (Wishing Well.) I bought a Salem 66 LP and didn't take to it... (any recommendations?)

Man - I kind of forgot about bands like Volcano Suns, Phantom Tollbooth. Had forgotten about Breaking Circus until I saw one of their albums in the racks on "That 80's Show". (misplaced by about 5 years.)

SST hasn't done a new release since '97 or '98... I know they exist in some capacity to keep churning out the big stuff (Husker, Flag, etc.)...it's really sad because they were the bravest, coolest label for so long. One more obscure SST band that I always thought was just brilliant but overlooked was Minneapolis' Run Westy Run... I think they went on to Twin Tone (whatever happened to them?) and have a new band called Iffy.

Both labels meant a lot to me, but I haven't thought about them, or the bands on them, in years.

I think Human Music is still available @ CDNow.com - for only $9.99! (I bought my copy a while back, though.) Offers a nice mix of the golden days of indie (Embarrassment! Urinals! Volcano Suns! HALF- JAPANESE!) and an excellent cross-section of Flying Nun goodness. I could do w/out Yo La Tengo covering Eddie Money, though.

Far too much to the list, but off the top:

Homestead search: Trumans Water, Love Child, Tall Dwarfs, Sleepyhead, Big Dipper, HAPPY FLOWERS, THE FROGS, Dinosaur

SST Search: Negativland, Steve Fisk, Opal, fIREHOSE, Minutemen, Husker Du, Wurm, Pell Mell, Universal Congress Of, Dinosaur Jr., Gone

Destroy - DC3. Dez was OK and all but what the fuck was he thinking?

dave q, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Search: Elliott Sharp. Not everyone's cup of tea, and he's made some downright awful albums, but I love his stuff with Carbon that he did for SST, and that Soldier String Quartet.

Plus, you know, all that stuff everyone else mentioned.

Destroy: I think pretty much everything after Pell Mell's "Flow" can safely be obliterated.

Doug, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the only noteworthy thing that either of those labels did was Homestead putting out the first CD edition of the greatest album ever made (Hallelujah all the way home).
and that Human Music compilation is particularly loathsome.

Everything else on SST after that album came out. As near as I can remember.

I like Pell Mell's INTERSTATE just fine.

Looking thru some old vinyl last night I found two fantastic albums on Homestead, both by The Outnumbered - "Why Are All The Good People Going Crazy" and "Holding the Grenade Too Long".
