In Praise of: The Saints

I picked up (I'm) Stranded a couple years ago for $5 and loved it, some of most propulsive, filthy punk rock I've ever heard. Being Australian and all I already knew the songs (I'm) Stranded" and "Know Your Product". The CD went missing and I found it a few days ago. To my delight it still sounded brilliant. I Immediately downloaded their best of. A treasure-trove of unhinged rock'n'roll would-be classics.
I am in utter awe of their fantasticnesses, even their their slower songs ("All Times Through Paradise" and "Memories Are Made of This) are great.

Proclaim your love for this fabulous band.

Someone hawked it to me on 12" for £10 the other day. I'm pretty sure i got ripped off.

Still a great fucking album though.

"(I'm) Stranded" is probably the single greatest Punk single of all time (yes, better than the Ramones, the `Pistols, etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice score.

I don't know how Pounds/AUS$ relate, I assume that would be about $20-$25 Aus (normal CD price)... in which case you certainly didn't get ripped off. If it was original you ripped HIM off, as i've NEVER seen it on vinyl, anywhere.

Also: Alex is right.

I never tire of the first three Saints LPs. They always had that super visceral rock and roll dirt (a la Dolls, Thunders) that so many of their English contemporaries didn't have.

'Eternally Yours' might well be my favourite rock album

Seuss, Monday, 6 June 2005 01:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Definitely one of the absolute best of the early punk bands. "One Way Street," "Know Your Product" anyone?

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Prehistoric Hits.

(I'm) Stranded is one of my favorite punk albums.

This is due, in no small part, to the gigantic voicecrush I have on Chris Bailey.

babyalive (babyalive), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Will I get beaten if I say that I quite liked some of All Fools Day? Eternally Yours reigns supreme though.

i love love love love the saints. for me, one of those bands that marks a major change in your outlook/tastes.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:35 (fifteen years ago) link

The Saints was worthless noisy bilge which proves there was nothing worth in Australian music before it was rescued by INXS.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:53 (fifteen years ago) link

For a change I agree with Alex on this one.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Chris Bailey has such a perfect sneer in his voice

Seuss, Monday, 6 June 2005 07:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I do not agree. Punks rocks was the worst thing to happen to pop music in the last 30 years. We would all have been better off without it.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:58 (fifteen years ago) link

who is this troll?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:02 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, it's marcello. marcello, take a nap.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:03 (fifteen years ago) link

No, you are the who is this troll because you fail to realise that punks rocks destroyed melody and belief and honesty and it took 30 years before Ben Folds could rescue it so you should the take a nap then you might awaken to musics as it should be played, for instance the Hollys.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I didn't truly realise I loved them until "Know Your Product" grabbed me on the 364th casual exposure. They were great with brass, and Prehistoric Sounds was the sometimes overlooked culmination of that stuff. The only item I find difficult to praise is that 1974 demos record.

No further encouraging advice re: the post-Kuepper era then?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I kinda liked Paralytic Tonight, Dublin Tomorrow. And the version of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" on The Monkey Puzzle. And some of All Fools' Day, too. But the first 3 LPs, that's the stuff.

going to see the saints (well, Chris Bailey, anyway) in Toronto next week. Anyone seen them tour recently? What to expect?

Found this bit of stranded video goodness on YouTube. They must've been an amazing band to see in the mid 70s.

The problem with the Saints is that all their songs go on too long. I'm Stranded shouldn't be more than 2:30. And Nights In Venice is practically interminable.

yeah, at the 'shoe on the 27th. sorry to hear they sucked before christmas. I don't have really high hopes for this show, but I figured I'd take a chance on 'em. Did it suck like a punkrock oldies show, or like a "here's some of our lousy new stuff" show?

"I'm Stranded" is my favorite punk album of all time, and probably one of my twenty favorite records overall. I realize that probably makes me crazy but so it goes.

Never have seen them, saw Ed Kuepper a few times, but no Saints. Wouldn't mind though. Even if it's documented that they suck, I'd still go. I'm also harboring a 'voicecrush' on Chris B. I'd go see him hula hoop on stage if they were selling tickets...

Good thread! I love 'I'm Stranded' (the song!) and some bits from the first album, but 'Eternally Yours" is almost perfect, one of the most underrated albums of that era.

Agree with Zeus (and whoever else) about Eternally Yours. One of the best rock and roll albums ever recorded. Definitely in my personal top 10. I'm Stranded rocks harder, but I don't love it quite as much.

We'll agree to disagree, I think Birdman blow the Saints away. I don't hear "mannered" at all, quite the opposite in fact.

Bill Magill, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh goodness, I wish I could be at this gig! The ninth best band of all time reform! As a guitarist I can't say how highly I rate Ed Kuepper - absolutely killer sound all the time, super hooks and riffs - up there with the best.

adam, Monday, 30 April 2007 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw "The Saints" live a couple of years ago - Chris Bailey + 2 other guys - they sucked. Hopefully the return of Ed Kuepper will fix that, it was painful hearing songs like I'm Stranded completely devoid of rocking.

Brio, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:01 (ten years ago) link

By all accounts, yes. But I haven't heard it. But I have been enjoying Stranded and Eternally a lot lately.

Also, Rocks "You'r So Boring," which is the Saints-est non-Saints song ever.

is "prehistoric sounds" worth tracking down?

Oh hells yes. The horns add immeasurably to the punk energy.

The Fall's version of This Perfect Day on the Peel session beats even the Saints version

As much as I love The Fall, I must vehemently disagree with this. It's not even the same song in the hands of MES, it's another Fall song. That's not a bad thing, but in no way does it beat the original.

Listening to "All Fools Day" for the first time in many years. What a *glorious* album! Plucked strings! Flutes! Bailey-as-Van Morrison! Yes, yes, the first three albums are unimpeachable but sometimes you don't want that vibe, and this feels great.

I've not been interested in Mr. Bailey's work since, what have I missed?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:31 (nine years ago) link

Recently Bailey's been working with the French band H-Burns. There's an interview with him here: http://meltingpod.free.fr/?p=237

Been reading up on the early days of the Saints, and apparently Kuepper used a PA system as a guitar amplifier. Total hero for me too!

so ed kuepper has dusted off a bunch of old tunes intended for the follow-up to prehistoric sounds and recorded them with The Aints! (punctuation essential)

saw some of these live a while ago and they really worked, definitely felt like a missing link between OG saints and Laughing Clowns

umsworth (emsworth), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 05:19 (two years ago) link

All Times tHrough paradise collects pretty much everything by the Ed Kuepper line ups of the Saints so is pretty essential.
Shame it doesn't have video for the Paddington Town Hall set which may have been why I bought it, does have teh audio though plus a load of their non album & unreleased material.
& seems to go for about £10 or even €10 I think.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 10:06 (two years ago) link

If you get it for €10 then you are very lucky.

Not that it doesn't happen, or that it's a high price item. No, I mean - you are lucky. It's great.

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 11:25 (two years ago) link

Yeah, think I saw it for that price in the short lived record shop that was around from about this time last year to its sudden closing in January. Got some interesting stuff in.

Nice. The Saints and the Aussie 70s/80s underground scene had a renaissance in the 00s but has faded away since then, maybe this book will generate further interest.
