I've been searching around for quite some time. After finding him and speaking with him at length, he admitted he's been waiting 20 years for people to discover him, and to get his recognition. Fellow Bass historian R-Fresh talked him into joining myspace as a way to network and meet fans.

As Rich says, "the sleeping giant has awoke."

Yeah, just got Pappa's bulletin on this.

Granted, most bands I see at myspace are either electroclash, techno, or indie, so I can see where one wouldn't expect this...but DJ Magic Mike, Cutmaster Crash, Exotic E, and Blowfly are all also members.

On a semi-related note, does anyone here know anything about DJ Marlboro from Rio?

Nigel (Nigel), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a Miami Bass Brazil room at slsk that is manned by DJ Eletro (no c). He can tell you everything about Malboro, if you can translate his incredibly broken English.

Great interview with Marlboro at Hyperdub.

earlier when digging around re TK records (on a serious 70's disco trip today and so far the TK groove is doing good things to my current new music overload status) i came across this today :

i am now wanting to hear this kinda stuff in a much more keen manner than ever before ..

That would be one of my articles, if you didn't notice :-)

Take note how often Amos is listed in the electro, proto-bass and 1st wave discography.

Henry Stone, and his pre-TK/TK records really is the start of everything regarding urban Miami music, but once it folded in 1981, it left such a void.

I'm learning that a major point of gathering all the talent after TK down there was during production of the b-movie (b for breakdance, of course) "Knights of the City" around 1983.

Amos produced a song by one of the breakdance crews for that film (FBI Crew). Later, one of the FBI guys became Nice & Wild, producing the freestyle landmark "Diamond Girls", while Amos produced Connie (Funky Little Beat).

I had *no idea* - *great* article.

"Diamond Girl" is one of my favorite ever tracks.

I wonder why he is fascinated by water. Very good to see that a discography of his 82-87 stuff is about to be released. Who else does he produce these days?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

That Malboro interview was great...especially connecting Deodato and Banda Black Rio. Like TK connecting to Bass here.

He's obv building his profile as we spy on him as I didn't see any of that earlier. He did tell me something about doing a project for universal, but I didn't really probe.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Larry Dermer was one of his contemporaries, and he went on to score Disney films.

Water...
