The 'official' site has been relaunched, and it's chock full of news of impending events, release, etc.

http://www.killingjoke.com

And Mike Coles' Malicious Damage site has also undergone a radical re-design, and now offers a bevvy of `Joke-related (and non-Joke related) stuff. May I strenuously recommend the Transit Kings (Jimmy "KLF" Cauty and Alex "Orb" Patterson with Guy Pratt and Dom Beken)

Continue yawning, oh ye who feel no urge to honor the fire.

impending events

Impending doom is surely more appropriate a phrase.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, that goes without saying, Nedrick.

That was from the 25th anniversary shows at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London,

So, Should I fly to London in late February to attend the Killing Joke Anniversary Shows at the Shepherds Bush Empire....?

...purportedly soon to be out on DVD.

now I've been around these parts long enough to get the Alex NYC likes Killing Joke connection. But I confess to not knowing a single thing about the band. Recommend me a few tracks so that I can get a feel for them?

am disappointed that there isn't a jaz-blog :-(

The 'diary' section is supposed to serve that function (he has a bit in there now).

Recommend me a few tracks so that I can get a feel for them?

"The Wait" (later covered....poorly....be Metallica)
"Wardance"
"Follow the Leaders"
"Chop-Chop"
"Let's All Go (to the Fire Dances)"
"Eighties"
"Love Like Blood"

If you don't like any of those, you might not bother continuing.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Are you going to show up anywhere on the DVD Alex? *nudge nudge*

Also, is there any correlation whatsoever between the fact that KJ and Cabaret Voltaire both released 6-song live EP's in the same year, one called "Ha" and the other called "Hai!"? Nah, didn't think so.

Well, I got me an Orb vs. Meat Beat Manifesto Battersea Sheild CD thanks to Malish Damage mailorder.. enjoy my greens, Jaz! (or whoever is in charge of Malicious Damage!)

enjoy my greens, Jaz!

Nah, Jaz isn't affiliated with MD anymore. It's strictly Mike Coles (who designed all the album covers back in the early days).

No idea about a Cabs correllation....though I assume it's purely coincidental.

Release dates are a tough thing to pin down with this organization, sadly.

Not if you photoshop Jaz in Motley and a pound of lit dynamite underneath the four asses.

Major xpost...

While I think the original "The Wait" is supreme over anything that's covered it, I think Metallica's cover is alright! Garage Days Re-Revisited was truly Metallica's last blast of goodness. They really should have called it a day after that.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

My main problem wih Metallica's cover of "The Wait" is that Lars couldn't replicate Big Paul Ferguson's tribal thump, and settled for a standard hi-hat thwack (note layperson's terminology), stripping the tune of its frantic stride and turning it into workaday metal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I actually like Metallica's cover of "The Wait" as well....(tho the Joke's is better)....

Do you know if there'll be any special features on the DVD that IS coming out?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Nope. They're being tight lipped about that.....but I do know the extra tracks on the first few EMI/Virgin releases. Democracy and Pandemonium are out again in a couple of weeks....but they're not re-mastered, which makes no sense to me (I mean, why bother if you're not going to re-master it?)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:16 (eighteen years ago) link

For money I guess.

I mean, they must be getting desperate if they are willing to tour with Motley Crue.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, they must be getting desperate if they are willing to tour with Motley Crue.

Go back to the store and return every Killing Joke album you've ever bought. Then find a pasture and wash your mouth out with a cowpie.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw the Motley boys back in March and it was a blast! Good time. Killing Joke and them would be a heck of a bill, though it does seem like an odd pairing. At the March show there was no opening band.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

The story here is: (A) Nikki Sixx...somewhat unexpectedly...is a massive `Joke fan and a pal of Raven's. (B) `Twas the Crue that approached the `Joke to tour. The `Joke laughed it off. The Crue then said, "name your price". Jaz came up with a figure -- a figure that would constitute all the dates (five or six). Sixx took that figure for each night, thereby multiplying the proposed sum by five or six (i.e. a substantial amount of money, the likes of which the `Joke have rarely entertained.) With that in mind, how could they refuse?

That all said, I cannot imagine the `Joke converting great swathes of the Crue's core audience, but ya never know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

this has just inspired me to rip Night Time to my ipod before I go out to run some errands. Haven't rocked that one in a while..

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), May 28th, 2005 12:39 PM. (vassifer)

Oh, you always say that.

It would be more threatening to hear "Go buy some Motley Crue and listen to it till you find the similarities between them and the Joke!!!"

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, as has been labouriously pointed out on other threads, the intro to the Crue's "Dr.Feelgood" was ripped off of the middle-eight of "Love Like Blood".

Go listen to your little Foo Fighters.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 May 2005 21:52 (eighteen years ago) link

They're not little!!

Dave is taller than Jaz!

Anyway, I already pissed some people off on that board. (what a surprise!) But some people think I'm cool.

But Alex, I can't leave this board because then I won't get to talk to you and I mean, where else am I gonna find a Joke fan like you ever again?? With all your info and stuff.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 22:10 (eighteen years ago) link

That's a great story about the deal worked out for the Crue tour. It makes me happy when things like that happen to good people who posess not even enough business acumen to run a mediocre lemonade stand. (Takes my mind off my own money worries for the moment, as well)

That all said, I cannot imagine the `Joke converting great swathes of the Crue's core audience, but ya never know.

I originally read this as the CURE's audience. I was utterly baffled for awhile there.

Not too long ago I said I heard Birds of A Feather for the first time. That's not really correct. What I meant was I heard Flock The B-Side FIRST and THEN I heard Birds of A Feather. I still think the B-side is SIX TIMES BETTER than the A-side.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 29 May 2005 09:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Sixx is the king of revisionism, meanwhile he re-tooled the Crue's look circa Theatre of Pain to distinguish the band from the punks.

I thought it was incongruous that Motorhead are supporting on the Australian leg, but KJ do edge it.

Are Motorhead opening? That's totally criminal. But, Lemmy does live in L.A. (right down from the Troubadour. I rang his buzzer in `95....it does indeed say "I.Kilmister")...and Motorhead are a metal band. Now KJ and Motorhead together....THAT would be a fucking tour!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

My only real problem with Wilful Days was the screw up with "A New Day" (though they listed its inclusion, the track that ended up on Wilful Days is actually the single's flip-side, "Dance Day"). A regrettable oversight. As such, "A New Day" has never --- as yet -- been officially released on disc. Here's hoping it will be appended to the re-mastered editions of NightTime.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh my God. Can someone please explain what happens at the end of the bonus track version of Bloodsport? Christ, it's like the bass becomes completely unhinged, the entire foundation falls out from beneath your bottom and all that's left is a frightening arse-shaking FUNK that would likely leave even Curtis Mayfield shaking in his boots. Whew! *wipes brow* That is SCARY stuff, kids.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I feel so terribly silly. I thought Change was on the first album, proper. If it wasn't then I can't figure out the first time I might have heard it. That makes me feel really weird. Surely it was on the first album? But it wasn't. I can't figure it out. Where would I have heard "Change" for the first time then? This bothers me.

Alex in NYC or not, there is some delightfully wonderful sonic bombast to be had, here. The bonus track of Requeiem for starters. "Primitive" is rather interesting, too.

Olivia Orange Juice Newton John (Bimble...), Sunday, 31 July 2005 22:52 (eighteen years ago) link

"Change" was originally the single b-side of "Requiem." It was appended to the American edition of the first album.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 August 2005 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh Christ does that make me feel better. I had a used copy of the album on vinyl which was probably the American version. Whew! I'm not going senile...yet.

Olivia Orange Juice Newton John (Bimble...), Monday, 1 August 2005 17:59 (eighteen years ago) link

i am beginning to fall under the continued pressure, i may even cave in and get these bloody reissues.

i have always held the joke at arms length as they have always been top of my list as the worst live gig i ever went to.

now, i realise this is a sin to certain folks, but they were dreadful. they had got lost enroute and it was obvious that they were in a seriously pissed off mood and didn't want to do the show (1987 - Leeds Uni - with the awesome Lorries on support) - so they just rushed through the stuff at distortion levels due their overly late stage time.

not enjoyable.

however, as the last album ripped a big hole in my playlist i feel its time to do the research and go back in time.

also it means i may begin to understand the ever fresh passion of Alex, something that amazes even me with my ongoing well known infatuations.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

This is more of a general info question for the KJ die-hards:

I have the Incomplete Collection box set and never bothered to research any variance in track listing on the albums from the original studio releases, nor have I ever checked for any b-sides I might have missed from '80 to '85. The albums in the box are the only KJ I know (to '85 that is), and they're all of course fantastic.

So, is there something big I missed out on?

jsoulja (jsoulja), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

As far as I'm aware, the only reason to buy The Incomplete Collection was to obtain the different colored vinyl. Beyond that, it was irritatingly frill-free (which is why I never bothered to get it). I don't even think it came with a poster or anything.

Not that any of you swine care, but....the latest from RAVEN:

Dear Gatherers and friends of the fire,
Greetings and I trust you are all in good spirits.
So much has happened since my last yard entry, I must just mention Dimebags death, which was a tragedy both personal and for music, I never met anyone that had the lust for life that that man had, he lived and died for his love of the music. Rest in Peace Dime & much love to Rita, Riggs, Philip, Rex & Kat along with all the Pantera family worldwide.

Well…we have fought many battles to get through this last period since KILLING JOKE 2003 came out it’s hard to know where to start so I wont, I’ll just go on to say that we have banished a few of the demons from our midst and are far better off for it.

Prague has been the base for much merry making as well as hard work, we would like to thank all the long suffering bartenders in Prague city, they have seen KILLING JOKE at our absolute best/worst this year and tolerated it with grace, thanks to Nora, Tomas, Marika, and all the staff at ‘Through the Looking Glass’ & The New Rangers Crew in Karlova 25.

We are all pssyched about the new album, which will be called HOSSANAS FROM THE BASEMENTS OF HELL. We recorded the album in Prague 6 at Faust Studios and it sounds amazing, Jerry Kandiah engineered the record and we are producing ourselves these days...(no change there then)
I must say that I am proud of Jaz and Geordie, Benny and Reza as everyone has stepped to the plate and delivered beyond expectation, we feel it is some of the best work we have ever done under the banner KILLING JOKE… but hey!  we’ll let you decide.

You will all get a chance to meet Jerry & check out his other talents, along with drummer Lord Hedgewick & bass maestro Blaise, when they join us out on the UK/EU tour w/ his band TRIBAZIK.

While we’re talking tours…

The Motley Crue tour was a fucking joke & we hated it. There was problem after problem and a whole bunch of bullshit from the business end to get through that made the whole experience pretty draining all round. We overcame adversity and ‘…kicked ass’ as those morons would say. Always got time for Sixx, he’s a true geezer with low end to spare, but the rest can go hang. Our crew excelled & Crues stage crew were accommodating, but the headaches out weighed the fun & as usual that usually means destruction and chaos in return from our end culminating in Motleys manager getting knocked out in London. Well done that man! We drank a lot and went fucking mental non stop ending up in London with debts and a hangover like you wouldn’t believe.
 Any way fuck that.

We need to thank all the Gatherers & the hardcore that showed up to see us at BARFLY in Camden on the 21st for the Kerrang Jester Benefit, we had a great time & it was excellent to finally meet Jester Joe & see him in such good spirits in the face of adversity. Butcher, I owe you an apology for behaving like a hooligan.

We will be auctioning the original lyrics to ‘Turn to Red’, ‘Are you Receiving?’ & ‘Nervous system’ on www.killingjoke.com very soon as well as some other choice items including a bass guitar from Warwick & something ‘special’ from Jaz to raise more funds so keep your eyes peeled.

We are planning a playback party of the soon to be released KILLING JOKE DVD from the XXV Gathering in Feb called THE BAND THAT PREYS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER, along with previews of the HOSSANAS FROM THE BASEMENTS OF HELL CD which will not be available till Feb 2006. It will be held at The Cochran Theatre, which is Southampton Row, London WC1. On Sunday 16th October, that’s the Sunday after we play the Astoria. We are waiting on confirmation at this point re the date but I will keep you all informed.
There will be only 300 seats for this event so tickets are being made available to Gatherers first…of course.
Email me at killingjoke1@gmail.com to reserve. The tickets for this event will be £20 and all the proceeds will go to Jesters fund.
We are planning on making the fund a permanent fixture at the site so that Gatherers that are in need will have a chance of getting treatment should they fall ill & need help.

We all know what happened in summer, we did a few festivals but cancelled shows as we were under pressure to complete the new album, sometimes it’s really hard to swap heads in mid stream. Sorry to everyone in Germany who was disappointed by our cancellations. However, KILLING JOKE will be back in Germany in December to make up for it so look out for us and please come, we will show up THIS TIME! Really looking fwd to a Berlin show at the now legendary SO36.

We are gearing up for our European tour starting in Gent Belgium on Thursday 29th September. We expect loyal Gatherers & mad Belgians to show in force! That means you Marnick! Come witness the first sober (except Benny) Killing Joke shows in years! Ha ha ha. See you down the front motherfuckers.

Finally, Gems of Power, the spoken word box set that I did w/ Jaz in Prague is being made available, thank you to the many of you who have already shown interest. Those Gatherers who have reserved signed numbered copies of the first edition need to email me again at  killingjoke1@gmail.com
And those orders will of course be filled first.

Respect & regards,

Your grinning bass hound.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:52 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a cell tower I think

But this track is so good:

heard that track earlier today, my nerves have yet to recover. immense.
but yes, truly awful awful artwork ..
if they removed the skull and the engine part (??) then that would be an improvement.

This song is a monster. As monstrous as that cover art.

Terrible cover. Incredible record.

Cannot wait to FINALLY see Killing Joke in person for the first time at Roadburn in April.

Great tune, too.

Paul Ferguson really needs to dump the hi-hat/cymbals from his kit. The first 4 albums had such a unique sound in large part due to the tribal tom patterns and high frequency space opened up to Geordie's flanged jazz chords.

Don't mind Youth bringing in psy-trance production touches, but I haven't cared much for the past 22 years of KJ being the respectable Ministry alternative.

Sanpaku, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Really, nobody else has sounded quite like prime era KJ. Certainly not later KJ.

Sanpaku, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

That may be, but as far as I'm concerned, EVERY ALBUM aside from "Outside The Gate" has been immensely enjoyable when it came out and has a place in their catalog - the metalic "Pandemonium", the acoustic "Democracy", the violently angry "KJ 2003" and the long sludgy grooves of "Hosannas" are all really different from one another and all fantastic.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 9 February 2012 01:58 (twelve years ago) link

absolute dissent is a pretty great album, the first in a long time from them that I thught really sounded like old school KJ.

I heard from a friend they were 'awful' in LA last year and had a tech stand in for Youth...true?

I like this new song.

New album is balls...

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 05:38 (twelve years ago) link

Nice! New KJ take a few listens to reveal the nuances but, yeah, more greatness. Frankly I find every single album aside from Outside The Gate to be worthy, no idea how I'd rank them as they seem to change with each one.

Any thoughts on "MMXII"? Lyrically, Jaz is completely nuts - FEMA camps, really? At times it sounds like a cross between Brighter and Repressed Emotions. It's not bad but it's not grabbing me like the last one.

Good last disc, but do none of those CD singles have the 12" content?

Mark G, Saturday, 12 January 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I noticed that. Weak!

So I heard the 3CD "In Dub" collection that just came out. It's really more like Youth-plays-some-electronic-dub-and-occasionally-samples-Jaz. It has it's moments - an old favorite is the fantastic 10 minute Floating Leaf dub mix of "Requiem". Not sure I need to hear much of it again, though.

the crowdfunder for that launched 2.5 years ago, it could have been out by now if you updated this thread more frequently

Killing Joke had just got kicked out of Hansa Studios in Berlin for trashing the mixing desk. Christa (Plank) was paranoid that they would do the same in Cologne. She came up with a ruse to assert her authority and bolster her image as someone not to be messed with. She breakfasted on raw steak with the band. It convinced them that she was beyond fearsome and henceforth they behaved like schoolboys.

Jaz Coleman made a nifty EP with Deflore, an Italian band. Title track and last track reminds me of "Pandemonium" material, track 2 is a nice spacey instrumental with an aggro bridge.
