This is the thread where you shoegazer-lovers tell if The Engineers are any good

Until now, all the reviews I read about the s/t album are very positive and... I love the cover art. Does the ILM 'gaze-posse have any opinions over the subject?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the album a lot. Kind of like Eno gone shoegazer.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

someone i know had the mini album. i enjoyed it, but it was bit too gazy for my loving. i like a bit of up and down in my shoegazing.

b b, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually never heard of 'em! Where from, what label, etc.?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

the 'Come In Out Of The Rain' single was enough to put me off. i like a bit of 'gaze but they seem very dull. having said that, i have a friend who loved the single and swears by the album, so who are you gonna believe?

personally, i would recommend you try your hard earned on the record by A Cricket In Times Square, who are pretty shoegazey without being too dull about it.

Can someone compare them to pinback? That's the only band I know vaguely in the genre.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I much prefer the Folly EP from last year. With only 5 songs, Engineers sound mindblowing. Stretched to LP length, they sound lost.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i've only heard a touch of pinback and must have missed the shoegazing part. i don't here an apt comparison there.

b b, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, if Pinback is a shoegazer band, I'm Mandy Moore.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I just find it all so underwhelming... "Forgiveness" (and a handful of others) sounds like Super Furries without the strings or eccentricities. I'm really not sure how any of this fits under the shoegazer rubric, no matter how amorphous or contested it may be.

fnf (fnf), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for all opinions. I can't find it on slsk, and all the MBV comparisons I read pointed to something really good, so I decided to submit it to the ILM test.

Ned: they're on the Echo label. There's an EP called "Folly" that came out last year, and some of the tracks on it were re-recorded for the album. By some opinions here (Johnny et al.), it seems like the place to start (and probably stop... :)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 07:23 (nineteen years ago) link

it's weak, fearful daydreampop. i wish they would let it rip mbv or slowdive style but they keep it all in the closet. i liked the e.p. a lot better.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 26 June 2005 01:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Nope...I don't like it.
they don't sound shoegazey-ish to me at all.
they sound more like a really timid Mercury Rev.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Sunday, 26 June 2005 01:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Not really MBV/Ride/Slowdive type shoegaze, more dreampop.

Sorta average, but this song is worth salvaging

I have to disagree. Of course this is not MBV/Ride stuff.
The noise is not there, only the shoegaze, but tunes and harmonies are pretty strong.
I think they are my favourite in the 2005 new UK band crop (and this year was pretty poor I have to say)

I have to say, it's a good record. Dreampop, I need that when winter is closing.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I should pick this up. I enjoyed them at Sonic Cathedrals.

O my Engineers, NEXT TIME don't start an album with (by FAR) its three worst tracks. UNDERSTAND ME???

Fortunately, from "Forgiveness" onwards it's a superb record. "One In Seven" especially is really pressing the right buttons atm.

two years pass...

So new album finally out after 4 years or something?

I don't know if the rest of it's any good because the first track (which samples Harmonia and goes from there into wibbly drone texture heaven) just keeps grabbing me and not letting go.

Their singer is still totally punchable and annoying live, but on record I can't see his silly stadium rock antics and not knowing what to do with his hands, so he's fine. When they bring the bigness, it's fantastische.

I listened to this twice last night. I don't like the guy's vocals or lyrics much. Nice enough otherwise.

4 tracks in and this has creamed over the debut already

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:18 (fourteen years ago) link

indeed

i couldn't bring to mind a single tune from their debut. this one feels packed with hits in comparison. it might be a little *more* derivative, maybe? but they've really risen to the occasion..

❝♪♬♩❞ (electricsound), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 10:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think i've listened to anything except the single more than twice. think i was just traumatised by the ulrich schnaussness

Karen Tregaskin, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 10:58 (fourteen years ago) link

hang on, what? surely that's a good thing

I mean, track 6, 'hang your head' IS pretty derivative, has almost certainly ripped off about 15 different artists, and sounds a LOT like Schnauss, but manages to be *glorious* and involving as well.

And that last track! THAT last track! :D

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

It's like JAMC except instead of noisy feedback we have celestial synths!

The standout from the debut was 'One In Seven' and there's a song here ('Brighter As We Fall') that does the whole 'climactic noisy ending' thing even better. The other standout was 'How Do You Say Goodbye' and if there's one criticism of this record, it's that there isn't really a floaty weightless bit quite as good as the floaty weightless bit in that song, although really this album doesn't need one.

Haven't decided a favourite track yet.

That's excellent - they fell off my radar since the debut, will have to investigate much more closely. Furthermore, I managed to open that track in Spotify whilst it was still playing in my browser and achieved a kind of super-phased effect with them playing slightly out of sync = A+++

Can't say I'm too impressed with that Engineers track. I don't like the synth line, makes it sound a bit proggy. I mean it's not bad but I don't see any big departure/improvement over classic early 90s brand of shoegaze.

daavid, Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

which track?

TFF >> the debut so i'm interested in this, though i hope schnauss doesn't overtake the whole thing

one more winner one less white hipster (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

am pretty hopeful Schnauss WON'T overtake it but give them some awesome synth textures to work with, much like in that song (WPUT) which is too proggy for daavid but which pushes a LOT of my happy buttons

fwiw everyone on the Ulrich Schnauss thread earlier said that TFF was way better than the debut, which it is, and if you like shoegaze you kinda should hear it

let it sb (acoleuthic), Thursday, 5 August 2010 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link

the debut is no slouch of course, but three fact fader was a pretty impressive step forward

one more winner one less white hipster (electricsound), Thursday, 5 August 2010 23:29 (thirteen years ago) link

oh sure, the debut's got a few crackers*, although the songs don't ping out of the speakers like TFF's do - it's got a way surer hand and better melodies IMO

*I'm actually a huge fan of 'How Do You Say Goodbye' which nobody else seems to like - it, Forgiveness and One In Seven are the highlights IMO

Huh, why did I never post on this thread?

Can't say I'm too impressed with that Engineers track. I don't like the synth line, makes it sound a bit proggy.

See this is where eveyrone gets them wrong. They are way closer to a prog/psych band than they are a shoegaze one! They've even said Pink Floyd are a big influence and they sample Harmonia ffs.

Am I the only one who loved the debut album, then? "Lets Just See" and "Come in out of the Rain" are gorgeous.

Ooh its very Schnaussy isnt it! It has his chugga chugga beat to it.

I like this! Nice combination of their styles.

I just hope the whole album isnt this pace - I like the slow, stoned-like sound they usually pull off.

cathedral-sized jellyfish in your mind (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 05:48 (thirteen years ago) link

this album is absurdly mellow

maybe a bit too much, but it might be a nice album to smoke to

Two more albums since this thread went quiet! (and a few more lineup changes)

I too sorta lost track of them around 2010 but just found out about last year's Pictobug and thought I'd give it a listen -- it's quite nice.
