if this isnt the best single of 2005, 2005 must be really really great.

this sounds fun
DFA act The Crystal Ark perform at soul food restaurant/disco The Sugarhill Supperclub on Friday (6/17). Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
The Crystal Ark is DFA mainstay Gavin Russom and visual artist Viva Ruiz, who will be backed by a 9-piece ensemble including DFA DJ and engineer Matt Thornley, DFA bassist Tyler Pope and percussionist Alberto Lopez. There will also be (according to the press release): a slew of DJ talent, including Venus and $hayne of GHE20 GOTH1K and Saheer Umar (House of House); custom lights and visual effects courtesy Bec Stupak (Deitch Projects, Whitney Biennial) and Johnny Woods of Honeygun Labs, as well as choreographed dances by Alberto Cortes and Irene Discos and improvisational interludes.
Sugarhill is a sort of time-warp alternate history version of New York in the 1970s-early 80s, or at least some time when gold trim, drop ceilings, burgundy pile carpet, hunter green accents, and statues of eagles were the height of sophistication
― mizzell, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
BMS roughly/nearly as good as D and G. I really want to like the Crystal Ark stuff but something is missing for me.
― matt2, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

I really like it all. BMS is probably my least favorite, but still really good.
― Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Thursday, 16 June 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)
The Gavin Russom track on the latest Beats in Space ("Night Sky") is quite arresting - keen to hear it in a standalone context. The recent Crystal Ark live-to-air on BiS is pretty fun, too - sounds like a more disco/Tangerine Dream Orchestra of Spheres.

Ok so here is the definitive story in episode form:
Delia Gonzalez, Chris Holstad and I were living in Barcelona when "Casual Friday" came out.
And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts.
We were listening to Miss Broadway one night and drinking Absinthe and Chris came out in some short shorts and Delia said, to the beat:
"Hey Coach"
And the natural thing that followed that was "I read your diary". Now keep in mind we had already written like 30 BLF songs like this.
"I'm on the avenue", "Get your head out of your ass, people", Talkin' bout" to name a few
But this one seemed like the one to come next, to follow up "Casual Friday"
So we went into the studio and recorded it. We used a basketball for the kick drum. A real basketball. It sounded amazing.
@morganwiley from @MidnightMagicNY came in and did take after take. They were all amazing. Wurli take. Clav take. CS-60 take.
This was at @dfarecords studio btw. We drank champagne and tequila mixed to record the vocal tracks. Which there were hours and hours of.
So what we had was this insane long track that was ridiculously good. That could have become about 5 tracks just by cutting different mixes
By the time we went back to mix it the files were all gone. Not corrupt they just disappeared.
And many many people have gone back to try and find them but they really just vanished.
And of course the circumstances around the track's creation were impossible to reproduce by then. So it was impossible to re record.
And that's the deal with "Hey Coach (I Read Your Diary)".
