Black Leotard Front - "Casual Friday"

there have been a few posts about this on other threads, but it definitely deserves a thread of its own.

if this isnt the best single of 2005, 2005 must be really really great.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasnt this a single last year? I know both Patrin and Matos had it ranked.

djdee (djdee2005), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(Not to spoil yr fun, of course, the song is great!)

djdee (djdee2005), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the first couple of minutes to be annoying in a really awesome way.

adam (adam), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It was on the DFA comp last year. 12" release this month. And yes, 2005 is really, really great.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't the 12 of this just come out last (this?) week? i love this track, too. it's like epic trash disco. good song for spring.

basquiat (disco stu), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah - a couple weeks ago, i think. i just ordered it, though. i cant stop sending the song to people via gmail.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any difference between the 12" and the version that's on the DFA comp?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it was my no. 1 because you can vote for any track in the P&J singles tabulation. if I'd known it was gonna be issued this year I'd just make it no. 1 of '05. just like I'd have made Annie's "Heartbeat" my no. 1 of '04 had I heard it earlier (instead it's no. 1 of '05 since it's being released in the U.S. for the first time--I'm interviewing Annie in ten minutes!)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonjour... Bonjour... Comment allez-vous! Oh goddess what a turn-on...I can picture Delia being all Southern belle-ish and waving her hands in time with rhythm and gah...

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Monday, 28 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

so - no samples in the track, right?

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

no idea whether there are or not--why do you ask?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ROCKISM! *spontaneously combusts*

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Monday, 28 March 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always wanted to do that... *dies*

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Monday, 28 March 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ian mentioned that delia was the female vocalist - i hadnt realized that. wouldnt care either way about samples, just curious.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if this is a valid comparison, but I like "Kick Out the Chairs" much much much better.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I think it's Delia but I'm not certain. It doesn't mention anyone else contributing to the track, soooo...

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Monday, 28 March 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i havent heard KOTC! can you gmail it to me? plsmith is the handle.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stand the "bonjour, bonjour" part. Besides that, great song.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"bonjour, bonjour" is the best part!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

for real!

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Mixes perfectly with the Kerrier remix of Black Devil Disco Club. For the trainspotters in the audience.

And by mixes, I mean layers.

WARNING: SHAMEFUL NAMEDROPPING

i met gavin and tim goldsworhty at optimo a couple of months ago (both so cool and friendly) and gavin told me that he did all of the vocals on Casual friday, including the female vox!!!

they also told me there is a new BLF track ready, it had a crazy name but i forgot what it was.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

It's "Hey Coach" if it's the one I'm thinking of.

telephone thing, Monday, 23 January 2006 00:04 (twenty years ago)

you've heard it?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

It is still being edited. Work for the single "Hey Coach" and more tracks for the full length album will continue this March.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

doesn't "hey coach" not have a longer, crazier title, jg?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

"Hey Coach (I Read Your Diary)"
I cannot give away any more than that.
It is a crowd pleaser for sure!

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i seem to recall talk of one of these:

don't try and make out that the hugging was an isolated event!

THE MOST SHAMEFUL NAMEDROPPING OF ALL

I've listened to this song with Peter Smith!

(maybe that should be "pathetic" in lieu of "shameful")

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

So I have to be a dork and bump this to see if there's any news with regards to this album.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

nothing yet. sorry. both delia and gavin are living full time in Berlin and are consumed with art world obligations. Believe me, we want to get this rolling as bad as anyone, especially based on the half finished Hey Coach track which sits idle, waiting for some more loving from delia, gavin, james and tim.....

GALKIN (GALKIN), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

oh man i loved casual friday, i am really excited for an album

lf (lfam), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

if there's one half finished new track it sounds like it could be quite a wait.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

well, casual friday was what, 15 or so minutes long? they only need 3 1/2 more tracks.

lf (lfam), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

well we were aiming to finish the new single and move on to the record after the 12" release but they decided to move to germany and it has been quite tough to get them back here....

jed_, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

this sounds fun

DFA act The Crystal Ark perform at soul food restaurant/disco The Sugarhill Supperclub on Friday (6/17). Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

The Crystal Ark is DFA mainstay Gavin Russom and visual artist Viva Ruiz, who will be backed by a 9-piece ensemble including DFA DJ and engineer Matt Thornley, DFA bassist Tyler Pope and percussionist Alberto Lopez. There will also be (according to the press release): a slew of DJ talent, including Venus and $hayne of GHE20 GOTH1K and Saheer Umar (House of House); custom lights and visual effects courtesy Bec Stupak (Deitch Projects, Whitney Biennial) and Johnny Woods of Honeygun Labs, as well as choreographed dances by Alberto Cortes and Irene Discos and improvisational interludes.

Sugarhill is a sort of time-warp alternate history version of New York in the 1970s-early 80s, or at least some time when gold trim, drop ceilings, burgundy pile carpet, hunter green accents, and statues of eagles were the height of sophistication

mizzell, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

BMS roughly/nearly as good as D and G. I really want to like the Crystal Ark stuff but something is missing for me.

matt2, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

i feel the same way, i keep expecting to like crystal ark more, hasn't happened yet

mizzell, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

I really like it all. BMS is probably my least favorite, but still really good.

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Thursday, 16 June 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

The Gavin Russom track on the latest Beats in Space ("Night Sky") is quite arresting - keen to hear it in a standalone context. The recent Crystal Ark live-to-air on BiS is pretty fun, too - sounds like a more disco/Tangerine Dream Orchestra of Spheres.

three weeks pass...

Ok so here is the definitive story in episode form:

Delia Gonzalez, Chris Holstad and I were living in Barcelona when "Casual Friday" came out.

And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts.

We were listening to Miss Broadway one night and drinking Absinthe and Chris came out in some short shorts and Delia said, to the beat:

"Hey Coach"

And the natural thing that followed that was "I read your diary". Now keep in mind we had already written like 30 BLF songs like this.

"I'm on the avenue", "Get your head out of your ass, people", Talkin' bout" to name a few

But this one seemed like the one to come next, to follow up "Casual Friday"

So we went into the studio and recorded it. We used a basketball for the kick drum. A real basketball. It sounded amazing.

@morganwiley from @MidnightMagicNY came in and did take after take. They were all amazing. Wurli take. Clav take. CS-60 take.

This was at @dfarecords studio btw. We drank champagne and tequila mixed to record the vocal tracks. Which there were hours and hours of.

So what we had was this insane long track that was ridiculously good. That could have become about 5 tracks just by cutting different mixes

By the time we went back to mix it the files were all gone. Not corrupt they just disappeared.

And many many people have gone back to try and find them but they really just vanished.

And of course the circumstances around the track's creation were impossible to reproduce by then. So it was impossible to re record.

And that's the deal with "Hey Coach (I Read Your Diary)".

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Monday, 11 July 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)
