Copy protection on Yes "Fragile" reissue? (and list other CDs that seem to be copy protected here)

Is anyone else's Yes "Fragile" 2003 Rhino reissue (with America and Roundabout Early Rough Mix as bonus tracks) copy protected? I've had two copies of it now and neither will play on my computer's disc drive, but play fine on everything else.
The same 2003 editions of "Close to the Edge" and "The Yes Album" don't seem to be afflicted, hmmm....

That's odd. I picked up the Kasabian disc (for nine bucks!) yesterday, and it came with a sticker appended that reads: This CD is protected against unauthorised duplication. It is designed to play on standard playback devices and an appropriately configured computer (see system requirements on back). If you have questions or concerns visit www.sunncomm.com/support/bmg

I had no problem playing it on my computer, let alone ripping a coupe of tracks to my iTunes.

I had problems playing the new Judas Priest, but that might be part of the "DualDisc" technology, not necessarily copy protection. When I burned it in my audio-only CD burner, I was able to import the burned version into iTunes no problem.

I can't load that copy-protected two-fer of PiL's first two albums into my computer. It fucks up my computer entirely and I have to manually shut it down.

Usually if you don't try and import the first track of copy protected tracks it works (Which is okay for hiphop stuff with crappy intros)

I have this feeling that it may be an issue of slight incompatibility of that pressing with your drive. I have that all the time on my system, but since I have both a DVD burner and a DVD-ROM, if it doesn't work on one of the drives in my system, I just flip it into the other drive and it usually works just fine.

Most of the discs that have "copy protection" loudly proclaimed on the disc itself, the copy protection is easily defeated...just close the program that loads up automatically, and then open up your usual disc -ripping software...most of the time it'll work just fine. If it's a dual-layer disc you might have issues on some drives, though, if it tries to default to the wrong layer every time.

Apparently you can defeat copy protection on a Mac by holding down the option key as you're inserting the disc. Or one of those keys, anyhow.

i've had exactly the same experience as alex: most recently with various mute records promos. THIS DISC IS COPY-PROTECTED! they scream. er: well how come i can get it on to the mac and then the iPod witout any hassle?

that said, in the past - i think with martin gore's counterfeit II - i've had problems.

i'm using mac os x and itunes ... as, i imagine, are millions of others. surely the copy protection can't be for wintel PCs only?

i've never had a disc say ERROR: COPY-PROTECTED, on the CDs I mentioned above, my computer won't even recognize that there's a CD in the drive. It just whirs around and then stops :(

I haven't yet come across this problem, although the LCD Soundsystem CD is supposed to be copy protected. I normally play it on the boombox or stereo, though, so don't really care if it plays in my computer drive or not.

well, there's always your CD player ---audio/in---> your sound card / open up wave editing program, cut out tracks, tadah! copyright discs converted. Sure, it's more of a pain in the ass, and if it's too much of a pain, all it takes is a few other people to do this and do some P2P shmoozin'

there's only been one cd that absolutely refuses to cleanly rip (it will read ok in my pc but with crackle and noise throughout the disc), luckily it's by the not-very-good sizer barker and only cost me a fiver.

I did finally manage to get the "Fragile"CD to rip but it has some of the aforementioned crackle on it, which really sucks for like, "Mood For A Day" especially. I might just end up looking for a previous edition in the used bins.

that's my problem... have you tried it on other people's computers? I've had to rip them onto my friend's computer, burn a disc, and then transfer them to mine. taxing...

two months pass...

My computer apparently hates both Kompakt CDs I own, Kompakt 100 and now Superpitcher's Today. In both cases I was able to upload some of the songs to my hard drive before it whirred around a lot and refused to finish. And now it doesn't even recognize the CD when I put it in.

two weeks pass...

So tenacity pays off, I guess. Over the last couple weeks, I've been feeding Superpitcher into my computer just to see if it will accept it. And after about 50 attempts, it finally worked again. So I was able to import the remaining three songs. I have no idea how I was able to circumvent the protection (if indeed that's what it is).
