Not unlike like the rest of electronic music circa the turn of our century that was (or can be) diluted through mass appeal.

Also, hearing "Rise" was very strange. I'm almost positive I've heard it like a thousand times years and years ago, but I can't place it. My guess is either it was on some generic trip-hop comp CD my brother bought and I borrowed, or it was played a lot on whatever live365 station I used to listen to.

There's that trip-hoppish song (Who Pays The Bills) that almost ruins the Ada album. *shudder*

OK, since the topic interested me, I searched ILM and found that there is plenty of great discussion on this topic already in a more general sense (or as it applies to, for example, dnb). Still, any trip-hop specific comments? Was there a scene that birthed it or did it give birth to a scene? Can anyone pick a turning point where people/artists started to lose interest? Or is it not really dead at all -- am I being mislead by the fact that it is largely ignored or dismissed offhand in the music-related writing/criticism I read?

Jena's and sneeky's comments are a good start

I always thought of Laika as trip-hop since I got into them at the same time and enjoyed them for the same reasons.
Moloko got bracketed as trip-hop with their first album, wtf.

In the past 3-5 years I’ve noticed a surge in 90’s revival and trip hop influenced artists.
Billie Eilish, ASO, Tirzah, Bea1991, George Clanton, James K, Hatchie, Doss, Jorja Smith, Elaine Howley, Men I Trust, Nosaj Thing, Christine and the Queens…
Here’s a playlist with some selections (not everything is strictly triphop but most is):

My son recommended Whatitdo Archive Group to me, who are maybe more aligned with lounge revival or soundtrack/library music but there's trip hop in there as well.
