What is the American equivalent of Britain's Simply Red fixation?

SR doesn't move much product here. So who are the would-be American SR fans (presuming they exist) listening to? Ruben Studdard?

Are you talking demographically or artistically?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Michael Bolton.

Dave Matthews.

Hall & Oates?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Hall & Oates are too respectable to deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Simply Red. I still think Michael Bolton is the best choice.

Michael Bolton is the best choice for 1992, except that no one still cares about him. (Do people still care about Simply Red?)

> (Do people still care about Simply Red?)

In the U.S. last year he charted AC with "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and on both the AC and Dance charts with "Sunrise." (Can we officially refer to Simply Red as a "he" rather than a "they" now?)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

"You Make Me Feel Brand New"

..The Leo Sayer song?!

BAahahahahahaha!

(Praying & pleading that Sunrise is NOT the Gordo Lightfoot song...)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The Leo Sayer Song was called "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" methinks.

Certainly not to the extent they did in 1992

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Dave Matthews is closest, I think, though not many people over 35-40 listen to huim.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh right... Well "You Make Me Feel Brand New" is a cover of some guy with a high voice though, innit?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

"...Brand New" was a cover of the Stylistics hit. "Sunrise" was an original that heavily sampled H&O's "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" and sorta ripped off Ace's "How Long" at the same time.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

And, yes, The Stylistics were known for some rather high pitched vocals at times.

I'm listening right this second to the reggae compilation *Run It Red: Mick Hucknall Selects from 10 Years of Blood and Fire Classics.*

It is great.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Not w/ the lead pipe in the conservatory he's not, Geir!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed Micheal Bolton does not run a first-class reaggae reissue label.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Dave Matthews comes from sort of an "alternative" background, but so did Simply Red at the very start as well, so maybe they aren't so far off after all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, but has Mick Hucknall ever (literally) shit on a boatload of tourists?

I don't know if the Dave Matthews thing works. Do lame college kids (err, university i guess?) in England love simply red and discuss his musical prowess to great lengths, referring to him only by his first name... Simply?

Whatever the equivalent is, it needs to spawn horrors that look like this:

HA HA HA

I love that bit in 24 Hour Party People when Coogan the narrator lists all the people who would later be famous that were at that Sex Pistols show in London. When they mention Mick Hucknall the scene jumps to some HUGE arena/stadium where the dude is singing...I'm always like, WTF? Never understood the appeal. Is the band named after his hair?

Don't forget Hucknall put some of that money in the excellent Blood And Fire reggae reissue label.

they're named after red schoendist right?

I've heard that Mick has a diamond embedded in one of his front teeth. Ultimate bling if it's true.

Only Hucknall.

In some freaky way I always see SR in the same way as Mariah Carey. I'm most probably alone in this.

Not an American, but interestingly, as a perennial big seller in the United States:
Sade

(Maybe it's a lite-R&B thing. Hucknall should keep promoting himself to Quiet Storm radio.)

I wish Hucknall was a Commie.
